Week Ending October 18th 2008

Posted Mon 13 Oct 2008 9:09AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Just imagine if almost everything you did was a success. Welcome to the world of Oasis, who fly to the top of the album chart with new release 'Dig Out Your Soul' and in the process maintain a career-long perfect record. It isn't so hard to believe, but worth emphasising for effect - every single studio album the group have made during their 14 year career has made Number One. 'Dig Out Your Soul' is their seventh chart-topper in all, further boosting them up the all-time table to join the likes of Cliff Richard, Rod Stewart and of course REM who had their own seventh chart-topper earlier this year. The Beatles remain the all-time champions with 15 Number One albums to their name.

You'll note that this run of consistent success only applies to Oasis' studio albums. With compilations and other releases they somehow always fall short of the top. Live album 'Familiar To Millions' peaked at a lowly Number 5 in November 2000 whilst b-sides collection 'The Masterplan' and "best of" collection 'Stop The Clocks' could only reach Number 2 in 1998 and 2006 respectively.

The one place the success of 'Dig Out Your Soul' isn't reflected is on the singles chart. Instead of benefitting from the availability of the album and being cherrypicked as one of its best tracks, lead single 'The Shock Of The Lightning' instead takes a shock dive, tumbling 3-16 and now almost certainly becoming the first ever "brand new" Oasis track not to hit Number One.

Instead it is left to Pink to maintain her position as singer of the biggest selling track in the land, 'So What' sitting comfortably at the top of the singles chart for a second straight week. In straightforward statistical terms the single thus becomes her biggest hit ever, her previous Number One hits 'Just Like A Pill' and 'Lady Marmalade' only having each managed a solitary week at the top. More surprisingly it is Kings Of Leon who remain at Number 2 for the second week running, just as parent album 'Only By The Night' spends a third week in the Top 3, dipping to Number 2 on the album chart to make way for Oasis.

Attention surely now turns to the next big new release of the autumn, namely the new Kaiser Chiefs album 'Off With Their Heads' which hits the shops on October 20. To set the scene, its lead single 'Never Miss A Beat' gatecrashes the Top 10 with an impressive entry at Number 5. Produced by Mark Ronson, the single is a thundering barnstorming anthem which more than ever draws on the best bits of late 70s and early 80s new wave. The single is their fifth Top 10 hit single and their first since 'Ruby' topped the chart back in February 2007 and alongside that chart-topping classic is only their second to reach the Top 5.

'Never Miss A Beat' may be the only Top 10 new entry but plenty of other singles continue in the ascendancy below it. Ne-Yo's 'Miss Independent' makes a surprise reversal and surges to a brand new peak of Number 6 having tumbled to Number 11 last week. Meanwhile Platnum's 'Love Shy (Thinking About You)' gets the small boost from a physical release and moves 20-12 whilst Kanye West rebounds back to Number 14 with 'Love Lockdown' after the single made a rather surprising reverse last week.

I've touched on the issue a few times but in the light of the appearance of the next highest new entry it is best to deal with it head on, for I suspect that Snow Patrol will long rue the day that record-bending long runner 'Chasing Cars' ever became the phenomenon that it did. It is a problem faced by all acts who find themselves with a smash hit single that becomes a far greater success than they ever could have anticipated - the danger that they become defined by that song alone. At best it means that fans flock to concerts expecting them to play their classic hit and sitting on their hands for the rest of the set, at worst it means that radio stations just aren't interested in any new material as they remain convinced their audiences only want the classic.

Snow Patrol actually had six chart hits prior to 'Chasing Cars', two of which were Top 10, but you will be hard pressed to find the casual fan in the street who can name any of them. They have released three singles since, and whilst the last - soundtrack single 'Signal Fire' - did at least peak at Number 4, it did so whilst its more renowned predecessor was busy still floating around the Top 40 as the download eras first genuine megahit.

It is against this background that the group must now desperately try to move on, and they surely must look on the Number 15 entry of brand new single 'Take Back The City' with more than a little frustration. The first single from their forthcoming new album 'A Hundred Million Suns', the track is all at once energetic, refreshing and genuinely inspiring. Turning their back on maudlin balladry, 'Take Back The City' is a driving rock anthem that calls to mind the early work of The Cars (another band who coincidentally found themselves utterly overshadowed by a mega selling ballad). Hope for their chart prospects comes next week as the single goes physical, although of course with singles all but impossible to find except in big stores this is not the cast iron guarantee of a sales boost it used to be. Cross your fingers that this isn't the end of the story for 'Take Back The City' is more than worthy of being the track that finally allows Snow Patrol to rid themselves of the albatross.

The chart performance of Jack White and Alicia Keys' 'Another Way To Die' continues to fascinate. The Bond theme has now been available for three weeks and has remained locked at Number 26 for every single one of those. It is almost as if it is waiting for its moment to come, waiting to be revealed as the perfect complement to the opening sequence of the new film and thus a big hit in the waiting. For the moment however we only know it as a straightforward pop record and on that level alone it appears it is struggling to grab itself an audience.

New to the Top 40 at Number 30 is 'Tattoo' from Jordin Sparks. This was you may remember her first chart single in this country, creeping to Number 50 earlier in the year when it was made available as a "taster" release, designed merely to get her noticed rather than to actually be a hit. This chart return is therefore the real deal as it "officially" becomes her new single with the full weight of record company promotion behind it. Holding it back of course is the fact that its predecessor 'No Air' is refusing to die and indeed sits several places higher on the chart, going back up two places to Number 23 this week. As popular as it was, 'No Air' actually can't hold a candle to 'Tattoo' as a pop record so it would be a huge shame to see it lost in the mix due to the public's failure to move on.

The final new entry of the week arrives at Number 36 in the shape of the rather lovely 'That Kiss' from The Courteeners. The single is notable for the way it experienced one of the most dramatic sales collapses in memory during the week, its opening sales appearing to be enough to ensure it would rank in the Top 10 to give the group their biggest hit ever. After that however the single rather fell off a cliff and eventually only just squeaks a place inside the Top 40. The reason for this initial surge in interest for the single? 'That Kiss' does not appear on debut album St Jude and is instead released as a one-off as a taster for their forthcoming new offering which they are in the process of recording. With the group declining to commit to including the new track on that release, the single for a brief period became a near essential purchase, even if it turned out to be just for a small hardcore rather than the public at large.

There now seems to be an established trend of tracks featured in X-Factor getting a sales boost the following week.

But, did enough people watch Peter Kay's inspired spoof ("Britain's Got The Pop Factor") on Sunday night for any songs to be reinvigorated ? My pick for a return to the Charts: O'Jays "Love Train", Springsteen's "Born To Run", and Coast To Coast "Do The Hucklebuck".

Platnum went up this week! Yey!
Platnum can have an another Top 10 hit (even as an featured artist from H2O but what H2O did in the song?)!
Black and Gold Re-entered the Top 40 again at 33!

Can anyone tell me who are The Courteeners... I really have no idea who are they...

Happy to see Tattoo at 30 this week!

I heard Cilmi has a new single coming called Sanctuary... is that true?

I mean making another single if you don't understand, sorry.

The reason that Shock of the Lightning bombed is because it was a rubbish song that has been overplayed on the radio for the last two months. The die-hard fanbase (which is still sizeable enough to get to top 5) did not have the definitive release date that the old (pre-download) system afforded them, so the sales of the single have been staggered, rather than go straight to number one as the previous "brand new" Oasis songs (which were mostly equally rubbish) had.

Disclaimer: I say all this as an Oasis fan, not a die-hard and definitely not as those people with an irrational hatred of the band.

Much as I dislike Oasis, like Scooter they have been churning out the same kind of dirge for years, kudos to them to remain a number one selling act.

It is more disconcerting to see fantastic new songs from Snow Patrol, Keane, Flobots, Kanye West (never thought I'd like a tune, yes tune, from him!), being shunted onto the sidelines by X Factor prompted re-entries and wannabe karaoke singers (isn't hogging the Xmas number one with a turgid cover enough?).

I believe that whoever said a mainstream music programme highlighting new music (with non talent show participants) hit it on the head.

As for Alicia Keys and Jack Whites effort, ugh! Bond themes are known for their opulance and grandeur and this one is too sparse and a bit of a mess. A remix wouldn't go amiss. As a Madonna devotee I have to admit that Die Another Day suffered the same downfall.

My fingers are crossed for the cracking singles coming out that they do a Kings Of Leon or Pink.

Macca7174 - were you the bloke who clobbered Noel Gallagher on stage last month? I mean, he was supposed to be an "Oasis fan" too wasn't he???? Jeeez!!

7. gareth -
how dare you compare the mighty scooter to oasis !

Good to see Tattoo back in the charts. Def a grower. Hope it goes all the way, given the public now are familiar with Jordin.

What's up with Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars? Sheesh! Enough already, tired of the song.

I can't wait for the chart battles in November! It will be such an exciting month! Most notably the week of Nov 3rd when Leona Lewis's Forgive Me, Christina Aguilera's Keeps Gettin Better and Beyonce's If I Were A Boy all hitting shops on the same day!! Also Nov 24th, Britney's Womanizer & Take That's Greatest Day out on the same day!!!! Does anyone think Leon Jackson will be able to top te charts with his new song this weekend?? It's fairly decent but nothing brill and has had huge exposure on Sat nite on the X Factor.

urgh. Another rubbish Top 10 this week saved only by the Kaiser Chiefs amazing new single "Never Miss a Beat," aswell as Pink's "So What," although i was hoping Kaiser Chiefs would go #1...Whats with Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent," climbing back into the Top 10? Although i like some Ne-Yo songs, i find that particular song utter trash and very dull...looks like i was wrong about Snow Patrol going Top 10, but hopefully next week :)

Although its nice to see some classics re-enter the chars, i cringe a little thinking that it is courtesy of wannabe teenagers singing abysmally on what is possible the most over-hyped program on television. X Factor has gone on for just too long now. I hated it when it first came out and i hate it now. Meaning i can't stand the music from the likes of Shayne, Leona, Leon etc and woefully dread the next winner. Since th winners are guaranteed a #1 single, it ruins the fun in guessing what the christmas #1 is going to be (which is usually an awful cover of a decent song in my opinion) and songs that are actually worthy of getting #1 miss out... So really the "excitement," for Christmas time for the last few years has been guessing who is going to be the christmas #2, as thats a bit less predictable...down with X Factor! thats what i say!...

Yay for Jordin Sparks at #30. Top 10 material?

Although i'm a big fan, I think Scouting For Girls will flop with their next single "James Bond," I believe a lot of people are bored of them now as their songs are widely criticised for sounding too similar to one another, even though i believe that people would still moan if their songs sounded too different to one another...e.g. If they had a mix of RnB, heavy punk rock and pop on the album. It wouldn't suit would it? Besides, a majority of artists make songs that sound similar to one another (e.g. 50 Cent glorifying Gun violence and treating woman like they are all (BEEP) and Pink singing about a broken relationship or whatever), but thats because its the genre they work best at...(in theory lol) but if its variety you want then just make a playlist or listen to one of the NOW CDs or something...

Not only are Britney & Take That heading for a chart battle on the singles chart but both their new albums are also releashed on the same day, Dec 2nd. Britney's album being entitled "Circus" and Take That's being "The Circus" ! Yes you read that right! I think Take That should have to change the name, Britney announced hers weeks ago. It's a sassy, funky title that suits Britney down to the ground, sounds stupid for a bunch of 40 year olds! Does anyone think Girls Aloud can manage #1 in 2 wks time with The Promise??

12. Simon -
Cage The Elephant at no. 51 and Noah & The Whale at no. 53 - so close to have two large mammals sat side by side on the chart.

Good to see Cyndi Lauper at no. 90, but sad that none of the excellent tracks from her great new album has cracked the chart. Shame on the British public for allowing such genuine talent to go unrecognised.

13. WesK -
As far as singles are concerned, aren't Oasis now like McFly? Entry at a high position as their fans buy the track and then down to the mid-teens the next week, followed in a week or two by oblivion. To be honest I don't mind the Oasis track but I thought the last McFly one was better.

As for me, I found the new Snow Patrol single forgettable, I liked the new Kaiser Chiefs one and love Jordin Sparks' Tattoo, though I've been playing it for weeks and it's not really new.

14. Yahoo! Music User -
I think James was wrong to say that Shock of the lightning is the first new Oasis song to miss the number 1 spot.
If i remember correctly, Roll with it was the first release off their earlier album, and was in competition with Blur Country House, and Blur won it, and Roll with it only made number 2.
Please correct me if i'm wrong.

15. Yahoo! Music User -
I wouldn't be too surprised to see Geraldine (Peter Kay) getting to number 1 next sunday.
He can actually sing, and it was featured on his spoof (Hilarious) x factor type show.
It was also co-written by Gary Barlow (Take That).

BRITNEY vs TAKE THAT - post #11

What utter nonsense, in so many ways.

1. So only one act can use an album name ? What about all the Greatest Hits that we will see between now and Christmas ?
2. By your own logic, Britney can't use "Circus" either. Erasure take precedence, with their career-defining 1987 album.
3. Take That's members aren't 40.
4. Britney is neither sassy nor funky. She is an unfortunate victim of music industry manipulation.
5. Britney is, however, the centre of a media circus, thus making the title appropriate for reasons other than those you describe.
6. It is quite funny to think that some people may be getting a Take That album for Christmas from their granny, when they wanted a Britney album, (and vice versa), just because they were unable to explain clearly their choice.
7. Take That are the more creative of the two acts (viz their many writing credits). Therefore, there is a greater chance they actually had some involvement in the choice of title. It is rather probable that Britney was told what her album would be called by one of her many special advisors.

I rest my case.

17. RORY -
Gooner - Oasis' first number one Some Might Say was the first single from What's The Story, Roll With It the second (with the album oddly coming out a full six weeks after that).

Even taking into account the album being out, the 'incentive purchase' element James talked of last week, plus the fact 'singles are a waste of moooney man' among all but the rabid of their fanbase, 3-16 is quite the tumble. Even Let There Be Love 'only' went 2-9, and that was in the middle of December! They'd never admit, but it's a worry

18. ERROL -
And don't forget a big new entry from Peter Kay/Geraldine McQueen next week....

19. Yahoo! Music User -
14 & 16 - Yup, exactly. Also, 'Stop Crying Your Heart' out was a second single but before the album, and also peaked at 2. And of course they had five hits before 'Some Might Say', all but one of them previously unissued. But the one that they'd presumably like to write out of history is 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down', which reached no higher than 10 (albeit without a physical release).

4 - Sales weren't staggered, as the track was consciously not released as a download before the physicals. Well, some download sites had it on the Sunday, but that still counts as part of the same chart week. One factor nobody seems to have picked up on is that Oasis have long had a reputation for B-sides, which doubtless contributed to the long chart life of their 1990s singles - and there aren't any on this single.

20. Iain -
Snow Patrol will be a significant climber next week with 'Take Back the City'. I Don't think the Peter Kay/Geraldine McQueen single will make a huge impact. It will be left to Leon Jackson and Pink to battle for next week's number 1.

As for Oasis' double digit drop - Despite a lack of B-side on the single, it was the physical formats which flattered the track with a top 3 last week(I never once saw it in itunes top 10). The CD sales dropped significantly in its 2nd week, thus now at 16.
