Week Ending October 25th 2008

Posted Mon 20 Oct 2008 9:01AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Let's get the formalities out of the way first of all. There is a slightly unexpected change at the top of the album chart with Keane shooting to Number One with their new album 'Perfect Symmetry' to maintain their 100% career record, dethroning last weeks champions Oasis in the process. In the meantime it is Pink who remains supreme singles act with 'So What' clocking up a third week at the summit. That it does so is itself rather impressive, due to the fascinating battle that raged just beneath her for most of the week, and it is this battle that really tells the full story of the chart week.

Can one TV special have ever divided as many people as Peter Kay's "Britain's Got The Pop Factor..." which aired on Sunday October 12th? For every person who found it an hysterically funny satire of the whole talent show genre, you will find another who thought the jokes fell flat or were stretched far too thin or just went for the obvious targets. I suspect part of the problem was that Peter Kay's big strength has always been taking a subject and poking gentle fun at its idiosyncrasies whilst at the same time making sure he retains an affectionate nod to just why it is liked in the first place. Whilst that worked a treat for his most famous television offering "Phoenix Nights", part of the joy people got from it was a lack of detailed familiarity with the core material - a working mens club - which made it both entertaining and a revelation at the same time. "Britain's Got The Pop Factor..." was styled along similar lines, but the problem was we are all too familiar with the cliches and foibles of shows such as "X Factor" and so all the jokes about sob stories being more important than talent and bad audition performances, however funny, were ones we had seen spelled out in reviews for several years. As a situation comedy it failed to show us a new point of view to something we were already familiar with, hence the feeling of "is that it?" which many were left with.

Still, if there is one thing that Peter Kay appears to be a master of, it is creating hit singles. Tony Christie flew to Number One in 2005 thanks to his patronage and of course last year his creative reworking of 'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)' flew to the top and reintroduced The Proclaimers to a whole new generation of fans. Hence it should have been no surprise that the one aspect of the show that was for real was the release of 'The Winners Song' as sung by Kay in character as Geraldine McQueen. The track itself is actually an utter joy. Penned by no less a figure than Gary Barlow it is a rather clever satire, taking the sub textual sentiment of every "my life has changed forever" song released by talent show winners (from 'Evergreen' right through to 'A Moment Like This') and articulating it explicitly. You will never again listen to the victory performance of an X Factor winner without the lines "I started with nothing/now I've got something" running through your mind. Moreover the track is the guilty pleasure you suspect Gary Barlow has always wanted to write, taking the cheese factor of the lyrics and melody to their highest level and using every emotional cliche in the songwriters handbook to achieve the desired result. I'd show it to you here, but the label appears to have banned the embedding of the video because they have contempt for you, the music fans, so have a link instead.

Yes, there is some small sniping that the talk of charity in the TV show was actually part of the joke and that in unlike all other Peter Kay-sponsored singles of the past, this one is entirely lining the pockets of its makers, thanks to what amounted to a two-hour TV commercial for it on prime time Channel 4. That it has flown to Number 2 and very nearly challenged for Number One would be impressive enough in itself, but just look at what it outsold to get there...

Namely 'Don't Call This Love', the long-anticipated first "proper" single from last years X Factor winner Leon Jackson which he debuted live on the first results show the weekend before last. He is of course following the Leona Lewis model, holding off for almost a year after his TV victory before launching the promised recording career, this it seems more likely to pay dividend than rush-releasing the kind of substandard debut album that ensured Steve Brookstein was never heard of again and which very nearly sank Shayne Ward before he had even begun. In truth his live TV performance of the song exposed the very weaknesses that made Leon such an unlikely winner last year, his voice sounding feeble and uncertain and his stage presence non-existent. With the comfort of studio technology of course it is a different story and 'Don't Call This Love' is an appealing jazz-pop track, drenched in soft focus orchestration and enough to twang the heartstrings of both teenage girls and their mothers. Once again there is no embed possible (what is that all about?) so clicky here to have a listen for yourself. In any ordinary week it would have been the biggest and most talked about release and a certified smash hit. Circumstances dictate however that he winds up at Number 3, outsold by a fat comedian dressed as a transexual woman and merely the second half of a rather extraordinary singles chart story. Stuff happens I guess.

Mind you he still has it better than The Saturdays who despite crashing in to the Top 10 at Number 5 with their second single are almost certainly likely to wind up the forgotten stars of the chart this week. At the very least the chart performance is a poke in the eye for the critics who were scathing of the prospects of the new girl group, in spite of the none too shabby Number 8 peak of debut hit 'If This Is Love' back in August. The new hit follows the electropop vibe of its predecessor with some added eurodisco in the chorus for good measure. I can class myself as one of those who were unconvinced as to their long term potential after the last single, but this new track is a pleasing revelation and suggesting that the Sugababes/Girls Aloud duopoly may not be as impregnable as first thought. Best pop record of the week, without a shadow of a doubt.

As was widely expected Snow Patrol move forward with 'Take Back This City' and shoot 15-6 to land the fifth Top 10 hit of their career. Maybe more so most acts, they seem masters at playing the chart climbing game with every one of their post-2006 singles starting low and climbing quickly. Heck, even that one about the cars only entered at Number 25 first week out and took four weeks to reach the Top 10.

The Top 10 revolution continues at speed with the arrival at Number 9 of the first chart hit in eight years for Sash! the German production trio who masquerade as a solo artist. His/their comeback single is released to mark the tenth anniversary (give or take 18 months) of the project and effectively combines the old and the new. As the title suggests 'Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)' is a mashup of a brand new song and the instrumental track of their debut single 'Encore Une Fois' which was a Number 2 smash hit back in March 1997. Those older ravers may actually consider the remake a rather disrespectful treatment of what remains an immensely powerful club hit, but taken on its own as a 2008 record it stands proud as a major hit single and probably the least intelligence-insulting club hit of the year.

Single movement down the lower end of the Top 40 is confined to singles that are either waiting in the wings to be big hits or those that seem destined never to be. Leading the way is 'Kids' from MGMT which creeps to Number 25 after a ten place climb, now just a few places short of the Number 22 peak of its predecessor 'Electric Feel'. Whilst the physical release of a single may not be the bellweather of hit status it used to be, it still represents what should theoretically be the peak of its promotional push. With 'Kids' having hit what is left of the shops last week, you suspect its further progress is unlikely.

The same cannot be said for Katy Perry whose new single 'Hot N Cold' is only just getting started, advancing 62-26 as airplay and attention begins to pick up. The second single from her 'One Of The Boys Album', it is of course faced with the usual problem of diverting attention away from the still steady sales of its predecessor, although it may well be that this will be less of an issue as 'I Kissed A Girl' is now starting to fall away rapidly, tumbling 7-14 this week. 'Hot N Cold' will consider itself unlucky not to have surpassed its illustrious predecessor in sales by this time next week.

Hitting what looks like a disappointing peak following a physical release are the Ting Tings who may just have run out of steam with 'Be The One' as it limps into the Top 40 at Number 28. Really they don't have too much to complain about, being as they are for most people one of the outstanding new acts of the year. Smash hit singles 'That's Not My Name' and 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' plus the further presence of single that never really was 'Great DJ' means they have more than enough hits to their name to make them an important part of the sound of 2008. 'Be The One' may wind up being a small blight on their chart history, but it may be they have just run out of people to impress.

We'll leave aside the miserable one place rise for Jordin Sparks at Number 29 with 'Tattoo' as it causes me too much pain, and instead concentrate on the single which is widely expected to be challenging for Number One next week. The rather lowly Number 30 entry point of new Razorlight single 'Wire To Wire' is of course down its belated store appearance, the track only escaping online at the back end of the week and thus unable to benefit from a full week of sales. Needless to say that as the first single from their forthcoming new album and their pedigree as an almost guaranteed Top 3 act, you don't have to be a chart genius to predict some impressive things for the track this time next week.

Finally for this week a small self indulgence. Following a great deal of comment amongst many people online on the subject of something I have a great interest in myself, I've spent the past couple of months producing a special podcast investigating the state of the Sunday afternoon radio chart shows and just why many music fans find them hard to listen to and a poor effort compared to the past. I'm pleased to say it is now available online to download at your leisure. It features interviews and comment from just about all the chart show presenters of the last few years, both on Radio One and Hit40UK and you may be rather surprised by some of the revelations it contains. To download it, have a hunt for me on iTunes or just go directly to the usual podcast feed, where needless to say this week's chart update podcast will appear later this week too.

Sash! at No. 9 was a huge surprise. I just heard it once on TV last week and I don't even know them...
I listen to the Chart Show on R1 yesterday, it said that it's up by around a massive 161 to 181 places (not sure).

Pink will likely to go down next week, I can feel the boredom of her being at No. 1!

MGMT, MGMT, MGMT!

Can anyone tell me why some songs in Radio One are slower than usual (i.e. Disturbia and Hot N' Cold).

When's Be The One and Tattoo going physical?

2. Michael_Russia -
hey James. great review of the week, aside from you not mentioning the fact that Sash!'s new single is actually built around the flopping single from Stunt, which peaked at #51 in January 2006, and which itself was a reworking of the "Encore Une Fois" original

Be The One was in the shops last week :-(

Disappointed the Kaiser Chiefs fell out of the top 10 but they might well be back with the album out today and people cherry picking songs. Saying that every track on there is a barnstormer of a tune!

Fantastic to see that a spoof X-Factor/Pop Factor style song manages to beat an actual winner of the X-Factor last year. Never agreed that Leon should have won as his voice is certianly not the strongest. Very weak to say the elast and his song is not that impressive, especially when you have nearly spent almost a year away. Where will his album go? Doubt very much it's going to go to No.1, not even 2 or 3. I predict a No.4 placing! Geraldine's song is absolutely amazing, and was slightly gutted it didn't amnage to knock Pink off the top! Good position from The Saturday's, the song is starting to grow on me... however I do not think they are going to be around a long time unless they have a track up their sleeves that gives the wow factor, I doubt it as I saw them at the Girls Aloud concert and they were awaful to say the least...

A surprisingly interesting chart this week. But who is buying that Sash record? I looked it up on youtube, and the version I found seemed to be some 2 year old Cascada song mixed in with Encore Une Fois. Is this a remix, reissue, two-sonngs-mashed-up, or something else?!

6. Padraig S -
Delighted Peter Kay beat Leon! And delighted to see MGMT moving up there too. Not impressed by the new Razorlight song at all.

7. Tina -
Rubbish chart this week which looks like it's already shaping up for the ever predictable Christmas market. Even Snow Patrol's new song is wearing off me. Talking of them, I wonder if Chasing Cars will feature in the year's top 40 songs for the third year on the run? Bye bye Oasis. Their popularity seems to be well and truly on the wane.

8. Regino -
Ok, I looked at the OCC site, Sash!'s song went up a massive 171 places!

9. Regino -
Also...
Post 5
Exactly, that version.
A remix with a typical (and ageing) dancefloor video. But not two-songs-mashed-up.

10. Regino -
Actually it is mashed-up, just kidding about not two songs. It is two songs.
"Screw you! No edit button!"

11. Chris -
The Sash record is indeed a mash-up, of Sash's 1997 hit Encore Une Fois and Stunt's Raindrops from 2006. They actually work well together and, although the original Encore Une Fois will always remain one of my favourite dance songs, this mash-up is 1000 times better than anything else dance music wise at the minute. It's huge 171 place climb is well deserved.
Also interesting to note that Radio 1 played the track for about 4 days, slagged it off then binned it. So it's Top 10 placing further shows how out of touch Radio 1 are with their audience. A case of Sash 1 Radio One 0 me thinks!
Oasis plunge a further 20 places I see. Looks like The Shock of the Lightning has "done a McFly".

Lesson one to record companies. If you want to have really big hits you now have to release records on the MP3 format. Take Kings of Leon how can HMV sell it when the track is not an MP3. They only sell MP3's now!

For those interested the top 3 is correct!
Even on the chart I have!
So here are the sales for them:
Leon 56,281
Kay 79,862
Pink 89,422 up 10,000 on last week! Her total sales to date 278,000.

Leon becomes the only Pop-X-factor winner never to have a number one!
The OCC got the sales wrong last time and the Tesco Katie Melua outsold him (and it was higher sales than OCC).

Other news Woolies have now a top 40 on thier website (it was a top ten only the other week).
N-Dubz Ouch has been number one on 7Digital's chart for 3 weeks, why so low on OCC?

13. Yahoo! Music User -
If only Geraldine had entered at #3 instead of #2. That way if (s)he went first to #1 then back to #3, the song would have been 2 Up, 2 Down.

14. AJG -
Leon Jackson spent three weeks at no. 1? Are you saying that it was outsold for each of those weeks by (respectively) Katie Melua, Leona Lewis and Souja Boy?

One fact that is certain is that Leona remains the only X-Factor winner to have more than one no. 1.

15. Blog -
I found the Peter Kay pop-factor show sooooo funny and both versions of the song are brilliant.I was hoping to see a surge of golden oldie classics returning to the chart after their use in the show.
www.ultquiz.co.uk one week to go on the 60's bands.

16. James -
Why do i get the feeling that Jordin Sparks's "Tattoo," is going to flop? It seems to not want to go any higher than No. 27 on the itunes chart. Its a much better song than alot of the rubbish in the Top 20 this week. When will Radio 1 start promoting GOOD music? instead of all this garbage like Soulja Boy, or Flobot or M.I.A...plus i'm starting to think Radio 1 is too biased... On the bright side Chris Br...actually i better shut up before i annoy someone lol

I'm getting a bit tired of Pink being No.1. Don't get me wrong i like it, but i think two weeks was enough. And its not THAT great...I hope something knocks it off the top spot next week, even if its something i don't like...

Where did that Sash song come from? ive never heard of them or the song, and i keep a close eye on the music channels, and haven't seen it at all...

post 1, i think Tattoo goes physical today...

Gutted that Keane didn't reach a new peak with Spiralling! Its likely going to fall next week, but i'd really like it to even just scrape the Top 20...btw is The Lovers are Losing going to flop? its only at No.81 this week, and i think physical was today...It might become their first major flop, as i think all of their singles have reached Top 25 so far...

I'm not sure if Hot n Cold by Katy Perry is better or worse than I Kissed a Girl lol

17. DS -
Why only one video this week? Is that so you don't get them mixed up like you did a couple of weeks ago? ;)

18. Regino -
Post 16:
No need for panic!! Hey, there's no more Soulja Boy, no more Flobots (take note that only Radio 1 is tuning the legendary Handlebars). M.I.A.'s Paper Planes is quite a Hit-and-Miss song, so I understand that.
If you look at their playlist, there are few GOOD songs. I think they should be promoting more indie artists like Natty, um... Jason Mraz, let's see... can't think of another one.
Also, they need to promote Climi's new song Sanctuary (even though Radio 2 does that) it might be good for her to NOT be a one hit wonder.

You speak for all of us. Pink's So What should go down next week.

N-dubz will be back with the song Papa. That song rules!

19. Regino -
It doesn't really makes sense that Ouch is No. 1 in 7digital while in OCC, it's 31, down 9 places. What smoke are they cracking??

20. James -
Hello everyone again. Hows it going? :)
A rather mixed opinion on the Top 20 this week, although that Peter Kay song is quite good :)

I agree with Huntj008 and finalname07 i think Radio 1 really needs a better taste in music lol On their currenct playlist the only songs i like on there are The Kaiser Chiefs, Keane, Snow Patrol, Razorlight, Coldplay and Jordin Sparks...P!nk is starting to irratate me a bit since all my friends keep singing it!! lol

I listened to the chart show yesterday and Fearne was "Skiving," again lol but i was absolutely appauled at how many songs Reggie skipped! I think Reggie is extremely childish and waffles on for far too long (especially when he is "flying solo,") and he'll laugh at anything (has an annoying laugh too), especially these "Rihanicdotes," he's been obsessed with for the last few weeks. They aren't funny, and Rihanna sounds a bit bored when she tells them...so yeah sort it out Radio 1! lol

Well if Pink isn't going to be #1 on sunday, i supppose its either going to be Girls Aloud or Razorlight :) (note to self:I really have to stop basing my predictions on the Itunes chart lol)
