Week Ending November 1st 2008

Posted Mon 27 Oct 2008 7:53AM GMT by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

The point has been made before by far superior music writers than myself, but it never hurts to repeat it. Aren't Girls Aloud such enormous fun? Their continual and endearing novelty stems not so much from the talents of the five themselves, but from the continual inspired creativity of production team Xenomania who are effectively given free reign to use the group as their personal plaything. The result is always something fresh and unexpected, each new Girls Aloud record featuring styles switching wildly from one era to another and their songs at times refusing to conform to conventions of structure and form, playing around with the very concept of what a pop record should sound like.

Case in point - brand new single 'The Promise' which sounds like nothing they have ever performed before and is all at once one of the most joyful refreshing pop records of the year. It is actually a lovingly constructed Tony Hatch pastiche, lovingly wrapped in brass-heavy orchestration and with a decadent 60s cabaret vibe running throughout, one which is reflected in the accompanying video and the outfits the girls themselves wear to promote it.

Speaking of its promotion, one can't ignore the fact that they very nearly knackered it up completely when they debuted the single on the X Factor Results show just over a week ago, putting in a halting and at times disturbingly off-key performance that all at once cast into question Cheryl Cole's ability to sit in judgement of the vocal skills of the wannabe stars on the show - the same concept that less we forget led to the public selecting them to form the group in the first place.

Not that this affected the prospects of the single it seems, and quite refreshingly 'The Promise' does something that Girls Aloud singles don't actually do that often, and charge straight to the top of the singles chart. In actual fact this is only their fourth Number One hit single and perhaps most crucially their first with an original song since their 2002 debut hit 'Sound Of The Underground'. Since then, for all the praise and admiration heaped upon their Xenomania-penned original material, their only chart topping singles have been two charity covers - 'I'll Stand By You' in 2004 and 'Walk This Way' in 2007. I'm guilty in the past of being lukewarm towards Girls Aloud singles, mainly as a reaction to the fanatical devotion of some of their online supporters who refuse to acknowledge any negative point of view towards their idols. On this occasion however, when they have appeared with such feelgood new material and bolstered their chart record as a result, really all you can do is watch with admiration.

Superlatives aside, the fact does remain that their stint at Number One is for the moment likely to be restricted to a single week, thanks to a certain charity release coming from - you guessed it - X Factor. In the meantime lets take time out to note that the two big talent show releases of last week turn out to be seven day wonders, Leon Jackson's 'Don't Call This Love' tumbling 3-11 (although his album is at Number 4) and to its eternal shame still winding up outsold by its spoof equivalent Geraldine's 'The Winners Song' which takes a 2-10 fall.

Now to the second biggest new hit of the week and to something I would frankly never have believed was possible. Keyboardist Paul Walden found himself transformed from nightclub entertainer to rave wizard Guru Josh in early 1990 thanks to his hit single 'Infinity'. Subtitled "1990s: Time For The Guru", it had more than a touch of the Jean Michel Jarre's about it, tweeting saxophone lead and all, but somehow it slotted in quite neatly with the dance-rave invasion of the singles chart at the time and peaked nicely at Number 5.

Then he made the fatal mistake of giving interviews to the music press, interviews where he broke what seems in retrospect to be a rather childish taboo, daring to express a point of view that was sympathetic to the Conservative government of the time and willingly engaging in discussions on the merits of the various methods of local government taxation. Back then, just as now, the "credible" music press were unable to deal with a point of view that did not coincide with their own narrow worldview and any chance of positive coverage of further Guru Josh releases was blown out of the water. Follow up single 'Whose Law Is It Anyway' made a relatively lowly Number 26 and although the Guru Josh concept was good for a couple more European hits, Walden found himself unmarketable as a performer and retreated instead to the world of production. For years Guru Josh was a byword for dancefloor naffness and a lesson to all acts in how not to pen your own career suicide note.

This cautionary tale makes the Number 3 record this week all the more astonishing because yes, Guru Josh is back, now as the Guru Josh Project and with a bone fide smash hit single thanks to an up to the minute remix of his most famous recording. 'Infinity 2008' adds new lyrics and a 21st century beat, but underneath the original saxophone melody remains intact (although the funky piano bit in the middle has been binned which is a shame), cutting in at regular intervals to remind us just where the single came from. A full generation after he first ballsed it up, Guru Josh is a superstar hitmaker once more, the icing on the cake coming from the presence lower down the chart of the original 1990 version which hovers at Number 70 this week.

To think this time last week we were talking up the Top 3 potential of brand new Razorlight single 'Wire To Wire' which does indeed benefit from a full week of sales but in the event can only limp to Number 5. At the very least it does give the band their first Top 10 hit since 'America' shot to Number One exactly 25 months ago this week. The success of that single of course prompted Johnny Borrell to start believing his own hype a little too much, prompting more than his fair share of critical derision. Hopefully now we are beyond that as 'Wire To Wire' has much to recommend it, an atmospheric piano-led ballad that in the right circumstances could easily wind up as a classic. Top 3 status would perhaps have given it the mainstream attention it deserves, so make up for that by appreciating it here.

Also shooting up the charts as we expected is Katy Perry with 'Hot N Cold' which moves 26-7 this week, or as iTunes spent the week insisting thanks to its now notorious profanity filter bug 'H*t N Cold'. In honour of that I should point out that it is nothing less than g***t that she has overcome the potential p*****m of previous hit 'I K****d A G**l' hanging around too long and prevented her from having the followup hit she truly deserves. Let's face it had it flopped the British public would have ended up looking a complete bunch of c*****s.

That's "cretins" by the way, before you reach for the screen cleaner. Kanye West is also new to the Top 10, the once misfiring 'Love Lockdown' now it seems well on its way to mainstream popularity with a 11-8 rise on what is now its fifth week on the chart. It is his first Top 10 hit under his own steam since 'Homecoming' peaked at Number 9 at the start of the year, although of course his starring role on 'American Boy' means he has a Number One hit to add to his 2008 chart tally.

Another single which started slow a month ago but which now seems to be picking up steam is Alicia Keys and Jack White's Bond theme 'Another Way To Die' which this weeks finally escapes what I guess we must call development hell and moves 27-18. The imminent release of the film which it soundtracks is almost certainly the cause and as I said when it originally charted, seeing the track in its proper context over the opening credits of "Quantum Of Solace" will surely do its prospects no harm at all. Story not over for this one yet.

Over on the album chart a sense of ordered chaos reigns as no less than six brand new albums enter the Top 10. Leading the way are AC/DC whose first new album in almost a decade proves that the time away has not dulled fans' appetite for their sound, with 'Black Ice' storming to the top to give the uncompromising but never less than entertaining rock group only their second Number One album ever in this country. Their only other offering to scale the chart heights was 1980 classic 'Back In Black' which had two weeks at the summit in August of that year.

The one startling Top 10 arrival amongst the long players is Michael Jackson's hits compilation 'King Of Pop' which hurtles back into the Top 10 (oh OK then Number 14, it slipped a bit at the weekend) after his songs formed the weekly theme on the October 18 broadcast of, you guessed it, The X Factor. In what may be a huge clue as to the relative popularity of each performance, many of his songs used on the show also take a flying leap up the singles chart, none more so than 1988 hit 'Man In The Mirror' which lands at Number 55, its first chart appearance since it first peaked at what at the time was a shockingly low Number 21 just over 20 years ago. Big Band week this weekend just gone means that the performances of the Barefoot Barbie, Nostril Lady, Los Pechos and Tiny Tears et al are unlikely to have much of an effect on the singles chart, but next weeks Number One is act the very least all but guaranteed to have an X Factor connection, and if Josh Groban's 'To Where You Are' doesn't find itself somewhere in the Top 75 next week then we have all badly underestimated the British public.

PS, special Podcast 'Counting Down The Hits' is still available, find out the real story behind the Radio One Top 40 show from the people who have been there.

wooo! Number 40 this week! Go Chris Brown!

I'm not really sure if im glad or disgusted Kanye West went Top 10 this week, as i hate the song but love his older music...

Razorlight should have been Number 1...ah well at least it was a new Number 1 this week...

Jordin Sparks "Tattoo," has no plans for a physical release...it was officially released digitally last week...Will it miss the Top 20?

Shame that most of the New\Re Entries to the Top 40 missed out on the Top 30. Maybe next week they will climb significantly...

Keane's "The Lovers Are Losing," flopped at Number 52 (First Keane single to miss the Top 25)...and Spiralling failed once again to reach the Top 20...Shame really because I love their new album :)

Eh? I can't see any Michael Jackson album in the Top Ten! Ah! There it is at Number 14.

I notice on Wikipedia that the Girls Aloud song has notched up more sales this week (77000) than any previous number 1 song has achieved so far this year in a single week. I am not sure how reliable Wikipedia is and don’t wish to fall foul of James’s wrath this week and so perhaps he can enlighten me. It should therefore take quite a powerful song to replace it next week as average sales for a chart topper have been between 40-50,000 copies this year (Wikipedia again). However, I acknowledge that the combination of X-Factor and charity song should ensure a probable 6-digit week 1 sale for the 12 X-Factor finalists cover of the Mariah Carey’s song “Hero”. All proceeds are apparently in aid of army charity Help for Heroes but perhaps should be put towards buying some decent kit for our lads instead. There’s controversy for you!

The video of Wire to Wire and The Promise are swapped over...James.

Yey! Girls are No. 1 again!! They will be No. 1 again next week, I bet.

Here's my key, philosophy (wrong lyrics!).
'08 version outpeaked the first version? Wow!

I'm sure the British hates Josh Groban... lol

Just what's with this f*****g profanity? Oh my G*d. lol
St**id to have that on i****s. lol again

There are tons of new entries in 40-31 (also a re-entry).

Scott did a better job than any of the 2 main hosts yesterday. It's because he's hosting the Official UK Top 40 at TV. Not saying he's professional.
He didn't skip a lot of songs. Just 2 in each 10.
I've heard him making a mistake just like the two does.
e.g. Hot n Cold
He said up 19 places to "17".
What? Did you mean 7?

5. stebags -
Yeah for Girls Aloud!
They seem to be switching chart positions with the Sugababes for 1st single from the album, the babes usually get a #1 and GA top 5.

I wonder if that LOON will tell us that the "real" chart is that Michael Jackson's Man in the mirror actually sold more than the rest of the top 75 combined...

A Big Congrats 2 Girls Aloud!! I'm delighted for them. This is their funkiest single to date, it's so different from everything else out there at the moment and definitely deserves the #1 spot. If the other songs on their new album are as good as The Promise, it will be without a doubt their best offering yet! Also they've jumped up to 68 with Can't Speak French & up to 100 with Call The Shots! Great week for them. I saw their X Factor performance and is wasn't awful, it was very good. People are just begrudging their success. Obviously their vocals aren't as strong as some of the contestants on the show (namely Diana, Alex & Laura) but that's not why we all love Girls Aloud, as James said it's their fun & energy that makes them so appealing! Surprised to see that Sexy No No No ain't back in the top 100 when the other 2 tracks are. I thought it was brill & shocked when it peaked at 5. Do people just not like it?

On the Xtra Factor on Sat night, Holly saif that Prince was back in the top 50 with Purple Rain! I don't see it! Shame though, it's a class song and as Louis Walsh said Ruth's performance of it was WORLD CLASS! Diana is simply amazing, it was she who performed Man In The Mirror & it's the highest placed Michael Jackson song in the top 100 this week . . I think this shows how popular she is & that she can easily win the show.

Things are looking good for Miley Cyrus & The Script, with their new singles charging up the chart! Love both of them, 7 Things has got real attitde & Break Even is stunning. Hope Miley can break the top 10 this time. Delighted that Katy Perry hasn't fallen into the one hit wonder category, Hot N Cold is brill, better than I Kissed A Girl in my opinion, hope it continues to climb. It's at 5 at the min in the US. Speaking of the US Leona Lewis is continuing to make headway with Better In Time, reaching a new peak of 11 last week. So she has also escaped the one hit wonder bracket over there! What's the story with Forgive Me? It's #5 in the Irish Singles Chart and not even in the top 100 here???

Totally agree with finalname07 Scott Mills did a very good job on Radio 1's Chart Show last night. He was much better than the terrible Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates. This is for a number of reasons.

1. As finalname07 said, he hardly skipped any songs, compared to the number of songs F&R always skip. (I'm so glad he skipped Dizzee Rascal lol)
2. I don't think i heard him once make any biased comments on any of the songs...
3. He never once went off the point and the chart was his main focus (unlike Fearne and Reggie who would rabbit on about pure garbage for a few minutes before finally saying "Ok, lets get back to the chart," Not once did i hear Scott say anything along those lines. He was more focused than F&R put together...
4. Before/after he played a song he would actually give out some useful/interesting chart music information. For example, before he played Chris Brown's Superhuman, he said something like, "Its a new entry for Chris Brown with Superhuman, taken from his "Exclusive Forever Edition," album, available for Download now, and CD single released on November 17th," See, THATS the sort of stuff I want Chart Show DJs to talk about, not "When i was younger i used to stick Action Men pieces up my nose..."

Another Comparison : Scott-"That was your #34 single this week a new entry for the Game and Lil Wayne with "My Life," taken from the Game's Top 10 album L.A.X.- the albums features guest such as Lil Wayne, Ludacris, Ne-yo and is available in stores now,"...or something along those lines... F&R-That was Coldplay with Viva La Vida at #29 and before that That you had a new entry for Jordin Sparks at #30 this week with "Tattoo," now the other day i went to the sainsbury's..."
You see? Unlike Scott who gives out useful information about the songs, you can tell F&R would rather let people know about their social life...erm hello? we tuned into the chart show to hear music, not 2 full grow adults making childish remakrks...
5. During the "Who's #1," suspension music, Scott pretty much did this "OK we are about to find out. Who is #1 this week. Is it Pink or Girls Aloud...(about 5-7 seconds silence) Its Girls Aloud, Pink is #2 this week (and then So What starts paying). When F&R do it, during the suspension music, they usually repeat everything they said, "alot of people on the text say Kings of Leon, others want Pink," "Whos going to be #1? You got some strong contenders here, Pink, Kings of Leon, anyone of them could do it. But who has done it?" Well we don't know because you either keep repeating what your saying over and over again or are waffling about rubbish before you finally decide to tell us...

So yeah...Good Work Scott...please do it again next week. Great job! :)

8. finalname07 -
Yeah. I think he said that it peaked at 9 in Album Charts (LAX by The Game). Something along those lines...

In other words, lots of Chart Facts! Not lots of not-so-needed chatter.
He can be the next Goodier, etc. if he keeps on improving from something needed on the show.

I can see that there isn't much silly chatter if it's just F or R.

9. Yahoo! Music User -
I expected to see a lot of Michael Jackson songs in the charts this week! However it's clear that only a few X-Factor acts have the power to shift other people's records. Namely JLS, Rachel, Austin, last but not least Diana Vickers. In fact she seems to do better at it than the rest. Perhaps a good indication of who's going to win?

On the radio chart they are all making Wes sound great at the moment!!!
When I was a lad they used to have new entry jingles play them three in a row, but that was local radio and that's gone down the pan too!

10. Yahoo! Music User -
I agree with other comments re: Top 40 on Radio 1. Scott Mills was much better than the other 2 muppets. I think it has been said here before, but it's no longer the flag ship show it used to be in the days of Mark Goodier. Radio 1 haven't taken the Top 40 seriously for a long time and anyone with a degree of gravitas wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, which is why we end up with lightweight 'presenters' like Fearne Cotton & Reggie Yates. Not sure when their contracts are up for renewal, but let's hope they don't re-sign Fearne Cotton, since she's rarely there due to her 'other commitments', and without her they would surely have to dump Reggie Yates as he is nowhere near competent enough to carry the show on his own. Perhaps James might be interested. He's just what the Top 40 show needs. Let's start a campaign!

11. Yahoo! Music User -
glad girls aloud have had a number one but dear god Cheryl is so damn annoying!

12. stewartlennox@ymail.com -
ooh am i the first commentator? well yet again another great blog but ruined slightly by the child-like name calling of x-factor contestants. Girls Aloud at number one should've been the case for several of their singles (biology, the show,no good advice and something kinda ooh).i'm glad to see GLuru Josh and Sash in the top 10...dance music has a knack of breaking up the monotony of r n b that we're being swamped with.
www.ultquiz.co.uk this month is bond theme artists (shirley bassey,to jones, duran duran etc)

13. gooner194 -
Hoorah, a British act at no.1 for a change.
Only the 7th this year.
Although not a fan of girls aloud, i can't help liking this song.
Great to see ac/dc back at no.1 in the album charts, where they belong.
Is Rock n roll train available as a full release yet, as it doesn't appear anywhere in the top 100.
Would be a shame if that isn't a hit.

14. James Masterton -
Yes, I know the videos are the wrong way round.. for some reason the content editing system on Yahoo breaks when you try to put both YouTube and Yahoo videos in the same piece and insists that the YouTube one goes first, no matter how you code it. I've given up trying to get it to behave and just let people work it out for themselves!

15. shireblogger -
Amazing to see Guru Josh at #3. That saxophone motif is heartbreakingly beautiful.

The latest Katy Perry single knocks the socks off her first hit. Sadly, it seems to suggest that a bit of silly hype is more likely to create a #1 hit than a great pop song which presses all the buttons.

Please don't buy the X-Factor charity single. Donate the cash directly to the British Legion instead. More money will reach its intended destination; and the charts will be saved from a nauseous dirge.

16. haplessboyrussell -
Agree with all the above comments re: Scott Mills - just a pity they made him stick to the pre-produced "jokes" re: Rihanna etc. And why play the same clips from interviews week after week - the Basshunter quote was funny the first time, but this must have been the fourth week...

I agree. Time to get James Masterton on the job.

Anybody know what happened to Christina Milian's new single "Us Against The World"? It's the same sort of feel as "No Air" - I expected it to be a big hit.

17. finalname07 -
I don't know Christina Milian...sorry...

The X-Factor charity single is a rubbish cash-in!
I know, Scott was doing the good job, but with the sillyness last few weeks, it will continue in following weeks. What a pity for Scott, if he doesn't even want it...

18. iainholmes81 -
Girls Aloud have indeed scored the highest week sale for a no.1 single year to date.

19. iainholmes81 -
I would recommend people read the chart analysis on Musicweek every Monday. It's quite interesting and often comments on sales figures etc.

Does it really matter who's going to win X Factor? Yeah it pulls in the ratings on a Saturday night but Leon Jackson is a lost cause. His album this week sold HALF what Steve Brookstein's album sold in its first week. That's when you know things are bad! And as if a final nail in the coffin were needed, Leon's album shifted about 10% of what Leona's album managed. No wonder they want a girl to win this year.

20. iainholmes81 -
I have to correct myself on the above post. Leon's sales figures weren't half of Steve Brookstein's. Apologies! Leon only sold about 13,000 less than Steve.

I agree that Scott Mills was far better that F&R on the chart show. However I don't think it's the presenters who are the heart of the problem. It's the producers at Radio 1 we need to petition for change.
