Week Ending December 13th 2008

Posted Sun 7 Dec 2008 10:07PM GMT by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

I'm consistently entertained by the ever growing gap between the two methods of music consumption - the old-school world of freshly minted CDs and eager shop-bound purchases, and the bold new age of digital purchasers, where music is brought to the consumer by means of a single click. The different issues this throws up are nicely highlighted this week by the two stories that developed at the summit of the singles and albums charts.

The story of the album chart was the simultaneous release of two almost identically titled albums and no small measure of concern about whether there was going to be enough product available to satisfy demand. Having enough people to buy your music is one thing, actually getting the stuff into the shops is another thing altogether, and the collapse into administration a week ago of the Woolworths Group and in particular its distribution arm EUK left several labels scrambling for alternatives. EUK's share of the market was quite considerable, with many of the majors trusting the logistics of getting discs into stores to the company. With its future on a less than sound financial footing, handing over thousands of freshly minted CDs was seen as more of a risk than many were willing to take and so at the very last minute some important plans were changed. This left more than few retailers sweating on the prospect of consumers seeking copies of both 'The Circus' by Take That and 'Circus' by Britney Spears and the nightmare scenario that they would run short of stock within a few days - just as the Christmas shopping rush got into full swing.

In the end it appears that any problems of supply were limited, but far from being the two horse race many predicted, it is Take That who end up the runaway winners. They crash into the Number One position and leaving Ms Spears languishing at Number 4. Indeed such was the lack of supply problems that 'The Circus' clocked up a phenomenal first week sale of over 432,000 copies, enough to rank as the third highest one week sale of all time in this country. Only 'X&Y' and 'Be Here Now' can boast a seven day sale higher than this - that is the league in which Take That are now operating. The chances of the man band having the biggest selling album of the holiday period look extremely likely.

This will inevitably sweeten the pill of seeing their single 'Greatest Day' deposed from its own Number One position after a solitary week, replaced instead by the lady who is fast becoming their own chart nemesis. In one of those strange coincidences that synchronised release schedules sometimes manage to throw up, they are replaced at Number One by the same act that deposed 'Patience' from top in 2006 and who prevented 'Rule The World' from topping the chart in 2007 - Leona Lewis.

She does so with a track that is firmly in the new world of digital sales, for not only is 'Run' technically nothing more than an album track subject to enormous public demand, but in seven days it has notched up a staggering 133,000 downloaded copies - officially the greatest ever single week sale for an exclusively digital track. Much as we criticised the decision of her label to delay the digital availability of the brand new tracks from the deluxe re-release of her debut album 'Spirit', it now looks to be a masterstroke of marketing. Following her show-stopping debut of the recording on the X Factor show a few weeks ago and near saturation airplay ever since, her mesmerising cover of the Snow Patrol hit has been the most anticipated single release I can remember for some considerable time. A Number One (her third, for anyone counting) was all but guaranteed but I don't think anyone could have predicted just what a success it has turned out to be.

For all that, opinion on the single itself is actually rather divided. It is a theme that will actually become even more relevant as we march towards the Christmas chart, but your view on the record is almost certainly coloured by your regard for the original version (which slips to Number 42 this week following its own spontaneous resurrection a fortnight ago). If you thought Snow Patrol were definitive, then the lavish production of the Leona Lewis version and her trademark vocal trilling will seem rather irritating and will only serve to suck the life out of the simple beauty of the song. On the other hand if you are like me and had little regard for the original, then you will be absolutely knocked sideways by this new version. Leona's 'Run' is that rare beast, a pop record with the power to knock you sideways with its intensity and all but compel you to pay close attention to the crystal clear beauty of her voice and the way it drags the track to a whole new level.

Its success, and commanding lead over the rest of the market, means that 'Run' is in pole position to head the "Christmas Number One without X Factor" market, and indeed Paddy Power at the time of writing has the track installed as the 10-11 odds-on favourite. Listeners to the podcast three weeks ago who took me up on my advice to back her then when she was as far out as 8-1 should be well on their way to a nice early Christmas bonus.

Now she may have missed out in the albums race, but the week long Britney Spears bandwagon that has rolled into town has at least helped her where singles are concerned. Lead track 'Womanizer' which had fallen as far back as Number 9 a fortnight ago rebounds in spectacular fashion to land a brand new peak of Number 3. Perhaps more intriguingly though is the unexpected Top 40 debut at Number 32 of the albums title track 'Circus'. Already being promoted to radio Stateside, and with the release of its video brought forward this week following an internet leak, the track is technically slated to be her next single proper on these shores too - but not until well into the new year. This may of course be just a one-off bounce thanks to cherrypicking of the best tracks from the album (of which 'Circus' is most definitely one) but it does mean that the eventual impact of the new single is going to be lessened when it finally does make its way onto release schedules.

The two Britney singles are actually just a small part of an extraordinary characteristic of this weeks Top 10. No less than eight of the ten acts at the top of the table can boast two (and in one case three) simultaneous Top 40 singles at the present time. Just count them:

  • Leona Lewis - 'Run' (No.1) and 'Forgive Me' (No.24)
  • Take That - 'Greatest Day' (No.2) and 'Rule The World' (No.40)
  • Britney Spears - 'Womanizer' (No.3) and 'Circus' (No.32)
  • Katy Perry - 'Hot N Cold' (No.4) and 'I Kissed A Girl' (No.38)
  • Beyonce - 'If I Were A Boy' (No.6) and 'Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)' (No.37)
  • Rihanna - 'Live Your Life' (No.7 with TI), 'Rehab' (No.20) and 'Disturbia' (No.35)
  • Akon - 'Right Now (Na Na Na) (No.8) and 'Dangerous' (No.26 with Kardinal Offishall)
  • Kings Of Leon - 'Use Somebody' (No.10) and 'Sex On Fire' (No.14)

What if Oasis released a new single and nobody really cared? Such is the fate that has befallen 'I'm Outta Time' which makes its chart debut at Number 12 as the second chart single from the 'Dig Out Your Soul' album. Their problem is that with this album they have fallen victim to what I term "Depeche Mode syndrome" where a long established act slips into a seemingly endless pattern of releasing albums that are no better and no worse than any of their others, but which as a consequence make little or no cultural impact and sell only to an ever constant hard core of collectors and fans. When I voiced this theory to a well known industry mogul once he responded with "who are we to make value judgements ?" Well sorry, but I am. I want to hear great acts making music that still matters, that adds to their opus and which dare I say it, has a point to it and proves they still have something to contribute. By charting at Number 12 and almost inevitably progressing no further, 'I'm Outta Time' is destined to become only the third official Oasis single ever to miss the Top 10, and the first to fall short since 'Shakermaker' hit Number 11 way back in the summer of 1994.

Seeing as we are two weeks away from the Christmas chart, we must naturally pay due attention to the arrival of an important annual tradition. I refer of course to the one achingly credible club hit which always seems to grab itself a place in the Christmas charts and which serves as an oddly comforting reminder that it isn't all about sentimental slush and irritating novelty hits which have no business muscling in on the most hectic sales period of the year. Leading the charge to become this years 'Heartbroken' or 'Boogie 2Nite' is 'Cash In My Pocket' from Wiley which lands at Number 18. Technically it is actually just the follow- up to his breakthrough smash hit 'Wearing My Rolex' from earlier in the summer, but in a chart that is largely devoid for the moment of any strong influences from clubland (I'm still of a generation which is having trouble adjusting to the notion of Guru Josh being cool), it is worth welcoming the single as a neat injection of credibility. I suspect however that it will be heading south before the parties really kick in which is a bit of a shame. Also featuring on the single is Daniel Merriweather, the Australian singer who first came to attention as the vocalist on Mark Ronson's 'Stop Me' in 2007. Reports are that he has a solo album of his own set for release in 2009, so chalk him up as a name to watch out for.

OK then I'll stop teasing. What is now certain to become the annual invasion of the Christmas classics is well underway with 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' now charting at Number 17, 'Fairytale Of New York' arriving at Number 19 and 'Last Christmas' at Number 36. As an entertaining diversion, bookmakers such as Paddy Power are also publishing odds on what will be the highest charting seasonal classic come Christmas week itself. Based on last years performance (and it seems chart trends thus far) it is the Mariah Carey track which is the clear favourite with The Pogues not far behind. If we are short of amusement in a fortnights time, I may take time out to note whether the Christmas hits all line up in the same sales order as last year. How strange would that be?

Gratuitous plugs to end with this week, remember the annual Record Of The Year TV shows from a few years back? Well the organisers still run the popular vote online even in the absence of a televised special. At the moment the race is too close to call, although thankfully the early lead of 'Rockstar' is well on its way to being whittled away to nothing.

Also of interest to chart fans is a two part BBC Radio 2 documentary on our favourite musical medium "Straight In At Number One" which is being broadcast on Saturday nights at the moment. Part One went out last weekend, with Part Two following at 7pm. Yes, it cleverly clashes with the X Factor final but it is worth checking out via your preferred catch up service. You may recognise at least one of the "experts" featured within.

Oh yes, and if we are permitted a small flashback to the events of four weeks ago it was fun to read some disparaging comments in relation to my reaction to Will Young's track 'Grace' bombing out at Number 35. "James Masterton need shed no tears for Will Young's new single Grace reaching 35 in the charts, it's not released until Dec.1st. Do try to keep up James!" was one of my favourite ones. This week the single was indeed released "properly" and bounces back from the depths to a new peak of, er Number 33. Still far and away his worst chart performance ever and one that more or less kills any further promotion for the album stone dead. See, I'm not always just pretending to know what I'm talking about. Do try to keep up.

gooner194, I have a theory. The Take That album was available very cheaply (£5.88 for the CD in Asda and only £3.00 for the download on Amazon), so it wasn't really worth downloading individual tracks for 79p each, or whatever they cost. Also, Take That now appeal to an older audience than Britney. Take That's buyers are more likely to want the whole Take That album, even if they didn't buy the single. Britney fans are younger and more impatient (not to mention insane and hard of hearing), so they are more likely to download a track off her album which they've heard might be quite good, even if they can't afford the whole album yet. But what do I know?

Oasis' chart placing is all they deserve. It is a boring, dreary, sub-Lennon dirge. I commented back when their last single only got to number three (which, by Oasis' previous standard, is low) could be attributed to the fact that they are entering the physical + downloads era for the first time. I hope this number 12 placing will give them the kick up the proverbial they need to stop writing albums in autopilot mode, and actually try to do something worth buying.
Again, I am saying this as an Oasis fan, desperate for them to wake from their coma.

23. Chris -
Actually I think Oasis' new single I'm Outta Time is a great song, and I'm disappointed to see it miss the Top 10. I'm not Oasis' biggest fan in the world but the 2 singles so far from their new album suggest it's well worth buying.
I noticed that Miley Cyrus' 7 Things has bounced back into the charts at No 25. Is this to do with her appearance on The X Factor the other week? Whatever it is, the song has this week reached it's highest chart position to date, having peaked at No 26 a couple of weeks ago before disappearing.

One good thing about downloads is that very young kids can't get bank accounts and so Bob The Builder has to be released on CD and is sold in too few outlets to grace the top 20!

I should imagine the download section of Woolworth could survive on it's own, so presumably it will be broken off, by someone with masses of cash to spend?

The trouble with X-Factor is the phone vote. I bet that well over 70% was female, and I reckon about 25% of that two million (this week) ever buy or download music; that is chart material. My personal theory is that up to last week the audience of it who voted was about 60% downloaders, as you could predict the chop contestants, by the strength of acts downloads. And so the highest downloader contestant has gone (Diana). So therefore none record buyers rule the phones on the X now.
I hope therefore Cowell's shoots the X-Factor in winner in the foot, by the release of Run on CD, as all three acts will murder that SHREK song!
Diana take Barlow's offer, Simion and Louis have stabbed you in the back big time.

TOTP yes bring it back BBC on Thursday 6pm or 6.30 on BBC 2 and use the midweek top 30, even Fern and Reg couldn't mess that up!
The BBC (or Andi Peters) killed it off just when the download was just getting started. Watch the Video charts (Sorry the band haven't made a video chart shows). Singing live on TOTP no problem, if the number one is an album track that record company thought wasn't good enough fot the first single.

Hehe i just checked out some old Top of The Pops videos on youtube, and some of the performances i saw were really good, and there was no miming! :) (I hate it when acts mime cause its a waste of money seeing them live if they are just going to mime!) I saw Eminem and Dido perform "Stan" which was really good, and i saw Coldplay perform "Yellow" and "The Scientist" I had never heard Coldplay live until then and they sound really good. I'm gonna check out some more vids :)

Its funny, hours before Radio 1 officiallyannounced what was #1 this week, Wikipedia had already written on the "Run (Leona Lewis Cover)" page that it was #1! Just goes to show how predictable the charts are really becoming!

Last i checked, a song reaching the Top 20 is a reasonable size hit, so surely Oasis peaking at #12 it still impressive? no? Ah well, i still wanna get their album. I quite like the first two singles "The Shock of The Lightening" and "I'm Outta Time"

Where did that Basshunter song "Jingle Bells" come from? can't find it on itunes anywhere...and its already at #41? I thought "I Miss You" was the next single or are the two being released as a Double A side?

Good news to regular Chart Show listeners, I think Fearne and Reggie have decided NOT to play Rihannicdotes anymore! :) ABOUT TIME! And although i don't like either presenter, i at least say good on Fearne for getting into the christmas spirit! :) My god, Reggie is such a grinch. Lighten up man!

26. Luke -
Well, thanks Leona for ruining a second song i like (The first was A Moment Like This by Kelly Clarkson)..heres some advice...STICK TO YOU OWN MATERIAL!!! (*Cough not that thats a big improvement anyway) lol

I've always known that "Wonderwall" by Oasis never reached #1 so i checked out which of their songs HAVE reached #1...and most of them i've never heard of! Some Might Say?" "The Hindu Times? (wth)" "All Around The World?"...The only ones I had heard of were "Don't Look Back In Anger" and "Lyla"...I was surprised to find my favourite Oasis song "Little By Little" didn't reach #1 either...shame :(

I was wondering if someone could tell me which single currently holds the record for the slowest climb to #1. Just interested :)

27. Yahoo! Music User -
I like to scan through the download sites around Friday or saturday each week and see what their charts are like. This week I saw no position for the Basshunter Jingle Bells record (like post 26), but 7Digital had The Kixx - Apology -at number 5. Several sites seem also to be selling loads of Glasvegas tracks. Most of these are not in the chart. Perhaps they are selling in the wrong shop/site?
I wonder which sites sell the most downloads?
Perhaps James could tell us the top twenty Retailers?
I bet I-tunes is the number one!

28. John -
At first 'run' was a little boring but now i love it and can appreciate her vocal ability and am glad to see it at #1, and even better that it's knocked take that off (:

Glad to see 'right now (na na na)' in the top 10 as it's my favourite song atm and has been for a few weeks, it's a shame it's flopping in australia (it's currently sitting at its peak of #40, unlikely to progress much further)

Again, 'use somebody' and the kings of leon... overrated! ah well at least its better than the crap oasis are releasing, so i'm glad to see them miss top 10.

It's a shame to see N-dubs only make it to #19 as i love the song, same with duffy only making it to #15, i believe it deserved a top 10 placing at minimum, i mean if warwick avenue can make #3 that should have had no trouble making top 10, were people buying the re-release of the album? how did it end uSame goes with 'breakeven', lovely song and a pity it didn't make top 20. ):p charting? Pity 'breakeven', lovely song and a pity it didn't make top 20. Same with the pussycat dolls... shame they missed the top 10, i will admit it is one of their weaker releases but is still of high quality and deserved a top 10 placing, who knows, there is still a chance, but with christmas closing in and those chrissy tunes rising it just makes things harder ):

Which leads me to the next thing, christmas songs. omg i absolutely hate them with a passion, it baffles me why they only make a mark in the UK singles chart, they dont even go top 50 in australia (not even mariah) or into the billboard hot 100.

Surprised to see rihanna make top 20, with a track that's been available for a year and a half now, i know it's rihanna and all, but the track isn't groundbreaking or anything. And why is JT included in credit for the song, i know he co. wrote it/produced/whatever and all, but in the song he says like 4 or so words, well thats all thats noticeable.

Props to james for predicting will youngs chart run, i completely agreed it'd be a flop and i'm surprised to even see it re-enter the top 40... his music was already boring in the first place, but atleast back then the songs were weel written/produced... the stuff he's releasing nowadays is utter crap... and is it just me or is he gay?

Great to see 'single ladies' progressing in the singles chart, my prediction is it'll be top 20 maybe top 10 come christmas week, i prefer this to the bland 'if i were a boy',

Also great to see 'circus' making waves this early on, its already at #15 in australian singles chart and will def. go top 10 next week and maybe even top 5 coz its sitting pretty at #4 on the itunes chart :D
She's definently got her mojo back on, though its debateable whether she ever lost it, she might have had a time where she was a little crazy in the head (but aren't we all?) but her singles have always remained HOT and it surprises me break the ice only made it to #15 earlier in the year, definently one of my personal faves.

Sorry it was post 25 not 26!
DAM THAT DATING SITE STOP POSTING YOU TWITS!

30. Iain -
I believe the OCC did not include digital sales from either Amazon or Tesco in this week's chart? (Read this tucked away at the end of an aricle on MusicWeeek) Why not? And how can they justify this?

Surely this would have an impact on the accuracy of the chart, especially given that downloads are cheaper than itunes from these providers.

31. John -
WTH is viva la vida still doing in the chart? it's so old let alone so effing overrated, i'd actually consider it one of the most overrated songs ever, definenly coldplays. It's still top 30 in australia... I'm so baffled as to why people love it so much, the material from the new album IMO is bland.

Is the akon song 'beautiful' just an album cut or is it an official single for the UK? Troublemaker is slated as 3rd single in North America after 'right now' and 'i'm so paid', IMO troublemaker is a little bland, esp. by akons standards, but it's better than 'i'm so paid' :D

Sad to see madonna flop, i really like the song, yes it's very weak by madonnas standards, but its still a great pop tune and much better than 'give it 2 me' if you ask me.

Where's 'dream on' by robyn and christian falk? could only manage #29 and 2 weeks in the top 75? alright i'll admit i knew you brits wouldn't fully embrace it, but wow, youse are cold.

Whats with the gab cilmi track? i'm guessing its a chrissy track? she's so overrated in my opinion, i'll give her one thing, great voice, but the songs just aren't right for her, even 'sweet about me' was nothing special.

Aww poor diva #4 (christina aguilera) does that make 'keeps getting better' her least successful single to date? it just plummeted so fast. I'm surprised Leona's still top 30, considering the songs nothing special and it's like 4 months old now.

What's up with 'i'm yours'? there's something with you brits, you don't seem to embrace contemporary/acoustic sorta artists, first 'bubbly' by colbie caillat flops now this, and both tunes are decent and deserve atleast a top 40 berth.

Great to see Kevin Rudolf in the top 75, even if its only at #75, the songs very infectuous and catchy, it's already top 30 in australia and this sunday will probably go top 15.

LOL... i think i've thoroughly analysed the chart now :P
Enjoy reading people ^_^ and have a great day :D

32. Laura -
Grace may have had a poor chart placing but Let It Go has sold a quarter of a million copies already and is continuing to move back up the charts (already in the Top 35 albums of the year), which is a lot better than a lot of big-name acts who have charted well with singles.
He's in the middle of a sold-out tour and the reviews are brilliant. I think it's a little silly to write him off - he ain't going nowhere!

Johnny, Christina Aguilera's latest song, isn't her least successful one, as Candyman only got to 17, although that was only available as download, and would most likely have gone top 10 if it was available in other formats.

Post 26: - The slowest climb to the top in a single spell inside the Top 40 is 13 weeks for Celine Dion's "Think Twice" (Nov 1994 to Feb 1995)although "Rock Star" by Nickelback came pretty close to beating this in February this year.

http://www.everyhit.com/record.html

36. David -
Hi chart.dude - if I remember rightly the record for slowest ever climb to Number One is still held by Celine Dion, set in late 1994-early 1995 with 'Think Twice', which took I think fifteen weeks to reach the top (the last three of which were at No.2 behind Rednex' 'Cotton Eye Joe') before going on to spend seven weeks at the summit. The previous record of 14 was set a decade earlier by Dead Or Alive's 'You Spin Me Round (Like A Record).
I imagine that 'Think Twice''s achievement in having reached 21 weeks on chart in its seventh and final week on the top must be an all-time record for the latest point in a chart run to still be at Number One... I don't know if anyone can confirm or deny this?!?

37. Yahoo! Music User -
I'm surprised by the comments about Oasis. For me "I'm Outta Time" is the best song they've released since about 1997. Yes it's Lennon-ish, but that's never been an insult in my book.
So the Christmas rush seems to be a little delayed this year compared to last year. In the chart before the chart before the Xmas one 2007 we had eight seasonal songs, compared to just three this year. Still, it won't last. A look at the 50-41 positions shows us what's to come though: Slade, Wizzard, Shaky and (saints preserve us) Basshunter all set to haunt us soon.
Also look out for Status Quo, who are releasing a new by-numbers Christmas song today, which will no doubt appeal to someone. It could actually end up being quite a Quo Xmas in 2008, as their collaboration with Scooter is finally released next Monday too! Rock on!
(I'm resisting the temptation to make a "Mistlequo" gag...)
Plus we've got Aled & Terry's offering - and did anyone hear Geraldine's one on the radio this morning? HAHAHA - it is very funny, but may suffer from the "parody becoming reality" syndrome.
Of course by far the BEST 2008 Christmas song won't make the charts, as it's being given away for free to fans on his website, but hey.

Seem to be a lot of Aussies in this week - to the guy who asked why Christmas songs are so much more successful here than in Oz, erm... might it be because they all mention snow and winter? - which I guess doesn't really ring true in your tropical turkey-on-the-barbie festivities down under.

And for me, "Viva La Vida" is THE best song of 2008, so there.

Finally, did anyone notice how off-the-pace the Pop [profane] predictions were this week? Normally they're more or less spot on, but this week they were all over the place - Oasis #1? Bob The Builder charting? George Sampson in the Top 20?

Merry Xmas charteuses et charteurs.

38. Yahoo! Music User -
Excuse my profanity - I meant "popbeeaatch", obviously.

39. David -
Aha, I appear to have been beaten to the post by grumpyoldgit.com! I think the discrepancy in weeks quoted is because 'Think Twice' may have spent its first couple of weeks on the Top 75 chart bubbling under the Top 40 - I seem to remember it entering the broadcast (i.e. Radio 1) singles chart actually at Number 40, presumably from a still-lower position...

40. Yahoo! Music User -
Post 30 don't go attacking the OCC, saying it's not accuarte. Those who use this site know I was sent to the cleaners from James for talking about the REAL CHART and how CRAP the sales figures are from OCC land.
I have said a thousand times that having 7000 outlets (BPI FIGURES) and the best selling record is only 700,000 is stupid! So at 59p if they can't sell 40,000 of each top 40 record each week than they might as well let them go for free!
Money for the artist, you say, well at 59p even if they sold 200,000 the money back wouldn't even pay for the recording studio time, so they lie about the sales figures. For by the end of the year at least 10 singles will have sold 1 million, which is about average since the year 2000.
The truth will come out someday James and those that doubt it. However what puzzles me is why they DO NOT adjust the album sales?

Take my words with a pinch of salt, if you must, but put the figures from the chart compilers in a calcultor and divide by 7000. Some work out at less than ONE record a week! IN THE TOP TEN!!!!
So that is why something dodgy is always there. The record industry is bent, so what hasn't it always been!?
