Week Ending January 10th 2009
Well come off it, most of you were still on holiday last week so why should the music industry be any different?
The week between Christmas and New Year is a strange one in chart terms. Whilst the old problems of shops being closed for several days and supply chains not operating at full stretch are a thing of the past, most footfall in stores is of people seeking out bargains in the new year sales, back catalogue leading the sales rush to the possible detriment of any brand new releases available.
True, the online stores don't quite follow the same pattern but there is still the general feeling that unleashing new product on the market during a week when nobody is paying attention and when the artists themselves either aren't around or don't have the opportunity to do promotional work is a bit of a waste. Then again, if nobody else is bothering then there is an neat window of opportunity available for anyone bold enough to take the plunge and attempt to gatecrash the holiday market. It helps if the act in question is either one with an already established fanbase (hello Iron Maiden and the Manic Street Preachers to name but two). Failing that, just make sure you are an act who has already been a name to drop for several months and who was all but guaranteed to make an impact with their UK debut no matter when it is released.
Into the latter category comes American starlet Lady Gaga whose British chart debut arrives several months after her album 'The Fame' was the sensation of the autumn across, well, most of the rest of the world as it turns out. After being forced to wait longer than most, it seems these shores are finally ready for the platinum blonde and her enormously appealing electronic pop. Debut single 'Just Dance' replicates its chart performance across most other major territories and charges straight into the Top 3, making the required splash as almost literally the only big new release of the week and ensuring that she is in pole position to grab the first new Number One hit of the year once the Alexandra Burke juggernaut finally runs out of fuel.
For the moment though that hasn't happened, leaving 'Hallelujah' to cling on to Number One for a third week whilst the record it displaced - 'Run' by Leona Lewis maintains its place in the runners up slot. The only two records to exit the Top 10 are the Jeff Buckley rendition of 'Hallelujah' which tumbles 7-22 and Geraldine McQueen/Peter Kay's 'Once Upon A Christmas Song' which as you might expect sees its sales tumble off a cliff along with the rest of the holiday hits.
"Geraldine" actually takes a 47 place dive this week, rocketing 8-55 in one fell swoop. Only one other record in chart history has fallen out of the Top 10 from a higher position, namely '21st Century Christmas/Move It' by Cliff Richard which dropped 7-43 in January 2007. With the exception of the two singles that were removed from the chart for technical reasons whilst in the Top 10, 'Once Upon A Christmas Song' still claims the record for the most spectacular fall from Top 10 grace in chart history. The only other singles to drop directly from the upper reaches did so with sub-40 place falls. Aside from the Cliff single they are in order: 'Sixteen Reasons' by Connie Stevens (9-45 in 1960), 'Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth' by Bing Crosby and David Bowie (9-46 in 1983), 'Red Letter Day' by the Pet Shop Boys (9-42 in 1997) and 'My Weakness Is None Of Your Business' by Embrace (9-44 in 1998).
Lower down the only other items of interest on the singles chart are the "next" hits from established artists that for the moment appear to be in danger of being lost in the mix. Beyonce isn't doing too badly with 'Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)' which advances once more to Number 14, but it is still somewhat in the shadow of 'If I Were A Boy' which hovers at Number 4 and is refusing to die just yet.
Instead it is the three top level girl groups who will all be eyeing their chart placings nervously. Entering at Number 23 are The Sugababes with new single 'No Can Do'. They at least don't have the challenge of competing against themselves, previous hit 'Girls' now languishing at the bottom end of the chart, but their past chart history shows that most of their biggest hits have come with singles that have made an immediate impact. This will doubtless be the cue for several fanatics to post angry comments below explaining in indignant tones just why there is life in the single yet and how I am out of order for suggesting otherwise, but if 'No Can Do' becomes their lowest charting hit since little regarded 2006 flop 'Follow Me Home', don't say you weren't warned.
At the very least they still have a better head of steam on them than Girls Aloud. Their problem is the continuing chart performance of former Number One hit 'The Promise' which is hovering around the Top 20 and refuses to let go just yet. This is all to the detriment of new single 'The Loving Kind' which eases its head above the parapet at Number 39. Truth be told the single is far too good to miss out, a dreamy mid-tempo song written by no less a pair of legends than the Pet Shop Boys who plug themselves into the Xenomania format with seamless ease. Still, good reviews do not chart placings make and "this song is too good to be a flop" is as much a myth as "team x are far too good to get relegated".
Finally there could be a similar fate awaiting 'Issues', the third single from The Saturdays which has crossed paths with their previous single 'Up', the former sitting at Number 27 to the latters 29. Hearing the two back to back on the chart only serves to highlight that drippy mid-Atlantic love ballad 'Issues' contains little of the spark, energy and sheer excitement of its predecessor.

I can´t wait for Rihanna´s next single "Underground" based on a Darude sample. It´s magic!
It is worse than last week, and i thought things would change a lot this week.
It's good to finally see Kevin Rudolph make the top 40 with Let it rock.
Lady Gaga will be number 1 next week, and it is starting to grow on me now, and the best thing about it, is that it should knock that awful x factor song from the top.
Sad and surprised that James Morrison dropped a place.
I was expecting it to go top 3, and sadly it looks as though number 4 is the best it will get to.
The Loving Kind is Girls Aloud's best single in ages & it was totaly stupid scheduling a January release . . Especially when The Promise is still so popular. Over Xmas I've heard that more often on the radio than their new offering. I just hope it doesn't miss out on the top 10 & break their amazing top 10 record.
Mills started by saying "for all you chart geeks". He even gave out some facts! It didn't last long though. What were those phone people on? And why did Mills say to them "can I help you?" It was weird.
If R1 read the messages sent, then the answer was clearly patronising and arrogant!
Lost cause chaps, getting shut of Fern & Reg wont make a bit a difference if the DJ is told to DUMB down the show.
The only hope is that people of the target market for the 40show send letters/e-mail to the Controller of Radio One asking why is it being dumb-downed.
The target market for the show seems to be under 16, judging by the texts they mention!
I don't listen to the chart show anymore, because there's not enough music in the charts that I like now. I still keep up with it all (though I'm older now), as I retain in interest in popular music, and I get a thrill from seeing music I love make the top 40. Besides, I get the feeling that 2009 will be more to my tastes, if indicators are anything to go by. I love 80s-style electro, and there's a lot of hype around people like Little Boots who rework this style for the 21st century. And, of course, the marvellous Lady GaGa single is surely set for no 1 (it has a physical release today).
Anyway, it's worth trying to voice our opinions, that we want a show for serious chart fans, but I can't see it happening. I hope it does, though, as it could be that I actually want to start listening to the top 40 again this year.
I think your correct POST 7, if I remember right Wet Wet Wet - Weightless fell from number 10 to number 96.
I don't really listen to the chart show anymore, it was better in the old days when they played the whole top 40 singles nowadays its those useless two who do it and think they're funny and don't really have a clue what songs get where or anything, they're more interested in talking to 'celebrities' and talking over each other.
I always read your commentary James, its the best thing about the charts the next day, someone that has a genuine interest in music and gives out stats and info, maybe you should present the chart show on Sundays!
The ultimate fanbase release, of no interest to anyone who didn't leap out of their chairs to buy it on week of release!
Back in those days, the chart was only a top 50, so we'll never know how many places the song actually tumbled that particular week.
As for Lady GaGa - I love 'Just Dance' although it does feel a little old now due it's huge popularity overseas. I have in fact been one of those people James mentions, dropping her name into conversations with my peers, stating her as the next big thing, in an attempt to define myself as an Oracle of all things musical. Follow up single Poker Face and album track Paparazzi are brilliant -looking forward to seeing her support the PCD at the end of the month.
I absolutely love Kevin Rudolph's track too. When is this due for release? I am assuming we can expect to see it climbing higher in the charts than this...?
With regards to the girlbands...I think the Sugababes will be lucky to go any higher. It is a catchy enough track but neither single from "Catfights.." has come close to matching Push The Button, Hole In My Head or Freak Like Me...
The Saturdays single sees them take a backward step after the immense Up, and has them sounding like Atomic Kitten circa 2001.
Girls Aloud - A good song but a tale of bad publicity...
Did anyone see the Eurovision programme on Saturday? I am already very disappointed in the 6 singers selected...Why couldn't they just get Michelle Gayle back and ask her to do You Make Me (Woo) which should have been the song chosen last year!!?
I will be interested to see if the appearance of Coolio/Ben Adams on CBB this year will see them re-enter the lower realms of the chart this week. Gangster's Paradise is a classic and probably guaranteed to renew a bit of interest but I also think there is room for former #1 Same Old Brand New You making a come back! ;o) I suspect that will be just me...!
As for the presentation of the chart show this week, yes, we are flogging a dead horse here. Its format is obviously set in stone for now and the content scripted by the BBC so as to target the same juveniles who buy crap like Lady GaGa and "Single Ladies" by Beyonce.
Please join my new facebook group 'uk top 40 chart chat' for discussions and info.
well, whether my email worked or not, I at least got a reply to it from the BBC! here it is:
I understand that you feel that the show is appalling and Fearne and Reggie are
biased against songs they don't like.
I'd like to explain that all our presenters are aware of our commitment to remaining
fair and impartial. However, in shows such as this, it's not always possible or
practical to reflect all the different opinions on a song or artist. Our editors are
charged to ensure that over a reasonable period they reflect the range of significant
views, opinions and trends in their subject area.
I was sorry to learn that you dislike the format of the show and you feel that Fearne
and Reggie spend too much time talking about subjects that are unrelated to the
charts
While we try to provide a wide range of programmes across our radio and television
output that will appeal to every section of our audience, there will inevitably be
times, hopefully rare, when what's on offer doesn't meet your own particular
interests. It's clear, from the amount of correspondence we receive each week, that
our audiences opinions vary greatly and it's just not possible to please everyone all
of the time.
Naturally I appreciate that you feel that there are improvements that could be made
to the show and so please be assured that I've registered your concerns on our
audience log. This is a daily report of audience feedback that's circulated to many
BBC staff, including members of the BBC Executive Board, channel controllers and
other senior managers.
The audience logs are seen as important documents that can help shape decisions about
future programming and content.
Once again, thanks for taking the time to contact us...
And thats pretty much it. I'm considering coming up with a strong counter-argument to really kick the BBC's behind! I'm gonna need your help everyone! If you think i should write a counter-argument, then say so, and if you have anything ideas i would be grateful. If you have any other personal concerns i'll add them in...
Please, just get anyone at #1 next week that isn't Alexandra or Leona. Halelujah or however you spell it isn't even a good song anyway (so goodbye forever Jeff Buckley...)... As long as it isn't one of those two artists, i don't mind...
Sadly, it still wasn't 100% without Fearne & Reggie, as he played a short clip of them talking on a previous show.
Also i noticed that Fearne Cotton is to present this years Brit awards next month, so we'll have to see whether she will do a good job or not.
I will at least praise him for mentioning some chart facts (unlike the normal presenters) and for not talking childish drivel just before he announced the #1...
WTH is "Sex On Fire" by Kings of Leon still doing in the Top 20? I was hoping to see it gone by the time i got back from holiday, but its at #11 this week! Its the most boring song ever...I'm still surprised it even got to #1 in the first place...
