Week Ending March 7th 2009

Posted Mon 2 Mar 2009 7:47AM GMT by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK
So let's recap.

Last week: long running Number One stays where it is, previous Number One sticks at Number 2 yet again and an older hit rebounds back up the chart after some award ceremony to retake the Number 3 slot.

This week: all change.

Yes, as is so often the case a singles chart in danger of the wind changing and being stuck like that forever is suddenly transformed by a welcome chart surge from newly minted hit singles with the Top 4 places all occupied by singles that were previously nowhere near the Top 10.

Leading the charge is the single that storms to the top of the chart as a brand new entry at Number One. When we last saw Kelly Clarkson she was the cause of several furrowed brows. Having seen her stock rise from "reality TV winner" to "globe-straddling superstar" in 2005 thanks to second album 'Breakaway' and long-running hit singles such as 'Since U Been Gone' and 'Behind These Hazel Eyes' she then proceeded to come close to flushing it all down the toilet with her 2007 album 'My December' whose contents were the source of rows with her management and label and which resulted in a fraction of the worldwide sales of its predecessor and a rapid downscaling of the tour she had planned to support it. Many casual observers could have been forgiven for assuming she had dropped a career-ending rick with that one "difficult" album, certainly on these shores where she charted just the one single 'Never Again' from the project and then vanished off the face of the earth.

It is therefore something of a joy to see her return with material that is not only much better but actually ranks as one of her best singles ever. 'My Life Would Suck Without You' effortlessly duplicates its American success and crashes straight in at Number One to give the star her first ever UK chart-topping single. Musically speaking it is a case of going back to what has worked in the past, 'Since U Been Gone' writers Max Martin and Dr Luke are at the helm again for a single that maybe could be accused of being a little formulaic but as an exercise in putting Kelly Clarkson back on top where she belongs does the trick perfectly.

As you will have doubtless read in many other places before you see this, by reaching Number One Kelly Clarkson now becomes the record breaking fifth female singer in a row to top the UK charts, continuing a run that stretches back to mid-December last year. Never before have female stars achieved such a stranglehold over the very top of the British charts. Not that they haven't come reasonably close before - in fact as recently as this time last year the charts saw a run of five Number One hits from Duffy, Estelle, Madonna, The Ting Tings and Rihanna all with females on lead vocals, even if the middle three were all technically duets with male stars.

I can tell you however that the domination of the fairer sex extends to a clean sweep of the Top 3. At Number 2 is 'Love Story' from Taylor Swift which as expected takes a flying leap up the singles chart. It is easily one of the biggest nu-country hits to date, eclipsing the Number 3 peaks scaled in the past decade by the likes of Shania Twain and Faith Hill. The single also has the honour of being the biggest ever hit of this name. Three other tracks called 'Love Story' have been hits since the dawn of the charts. Jethro Tull got there first in 1969 with their track reaching Number 29. Then came the famous film theme which charted twice in 1971, for Andy Williams (Number 4) and Shirley Bassey (Number 34). Finally there was the dance hit which made Number 8 in early 2003 for Layo and Bushwacka. Taylor Swift's song has outstripped them all.

Now the phenomenon is becoming so common we really need an expression for it, so let's coin the phrase Halo Hit. Smash hit singles for certain artists are increasingly generating a "halo effect" around their music, causing a second single track to rise up the charts in their wake, either very close behind or simultaneously with the net effect being two back to back hit singles at a pace that flies in the face of all conventional marketing strategy. One such beneficiary of this is Lady Gaga who charted in early January with 'Just Dance' only for the follow-up to land on the Top 40 just two weeks later as a halo hit. This week as 'Just Dance' finally drops out of the Top 3, it is replaced by that second single as 'Poker Face' ends a seven week chart climb to accelerate 15-3. Opinion is divided as to whether this second single is as good as her first, some say it is an improvement, I've yet to have it grow on me. Regardless of your point of view, it firmly establishes her as the major new talent of 2009. The only question now is just how well her next single will do, given that the halo hit effect generally only lasts for one single. Her third release from the album will rise and fall on its own merits alone. Oh yes, and 'Just Dance' isn't going away just yet - it is still at Number 6.

Meanwhile it is also worth noting that the female domination of the singles chart extends further to the fairer sex occupying a full 80% of the Top 10 this week. Only TI and Justin Timberlake (at 4) and Kings Of Leon (at 7) prevent the whole of the upper end from being completely oestrogenic.

Making similarly great strides this week are Take That who shoot up 20 places to Number 17 with their latest offering 'Up All Night'. Whereas normally their singles are expected to fly to the top of the singles chart in short order, they are in a curious position with this new track, coming as it does on the back of some record-bending sales of parent album 'The Circus' which has inevitably diluted the potential market for its second single. As they demonstrated back in 2007, they are not immune from having smaller hit singles in the download era, their single 'I'd Wait For Life' peaking at what is for them a comparatively lowly Number 17. Its not that 'Up All Night' is necessarily destined to go no further, but should it fall back next week we should not be totally shocked. Its one saving grace is the fact that it goes physical this week meaning that a small sales boost from dedicated collectors is on the cards. In the meantime they can console themselves with the fact that this is one of three Top 75 singles they can claim this week, with 'Greatest Day' still smouldering at Number 52 and the evergreen 'Rule The World' refusing to die, this week at Number 73 on what is its 64th week as a Top 75 hit.

Expect bigger things in the next few weeks for 'Beautiful' by Akon which becomes a Top 40 single for the first time at Number 30. Far and away one of the most popular tracks on the album 'Freedom', it appeared for a wander around the lower reaches in mid-December and has been hovering on the edge of the Top 50 more or less ever since. Now formally announced as a single, the track has a video and increased airplay and seems well on its way to becoming a hit. The single is notably the next big hit to feature a guest vocal from Colby O'Donis, hard on the heels of his guest role on 'Just Dance'.

Finally for this week just to demonstrate the continuing power of television, the new Adidas commercial that celebrates their 60th anniversary with an array of international celebrities has had a knock-on effect on the singles chart. The advert uses the Pilooski remix of 'Beggin' from the Four Seasons as its soundtrack, resulting in the track returning to the chart at Number 57, its first appearance since it first peaked at Number 32 back in 2007. As an odd side effect, the TV advert has had an even more positive effect on the Madcon version of the track which makes an extraordinary leap back up the chart to Number 35. It has no connection to the advert, but as the most recent and therefore presumably most familiar version of the song available is benefitting accordingly.

Hurrah! Comment #1!
When was the last time we had an all-new top 4? Early 2000s?

Morrissey out the single charts after just 2 weeks is confirmation of the death of the hard product. He had plenty of telly, the single was great, its presentation as a product was superb (well not sure about the naked photo!) but I like many of his fans just don't want the download version.

Singles have always been about disposable pop and this has reached its ultimate conclusion with a market where the product doesn't actually exist! There is something quite perfect about that.

When all the teenage girlies don't want their latest idol's single anymore they'll just press delete. The artist will literally disappear!

Incidentally, what am I going to do in the future? I used to rely on the same girls becoming women and making their young men throw away their much loved singles collection when they moved in together and shared their all too small appartment. I'd then go along to the local charity shop and snap up the valued collections for pennies!

I'm devastated.

Roll on the future. I do actually buy tracks that are exclusive to download, and this must be the way forward for the dinosaur acts like Morrissey, U2, and my biggest hero, David Bowie - who has been using this tactic for more years than Kelly Clarkson has owned an ipod.

Good chart this week, not so keen on the Kelly Clarkson track, would of preferred Taylor Swift to be number one but lets these two can keep Take That's absolute drivel from being number one next week, I mean they are so over rated, I guess they can always rely on housewives to buy their crap.

I can't see how Kelly Clarkson has gone to No.1 with her new single? It's just the same old music that she usually does. It may be her comfort zone but how long will she be keeping up these shouty songs for, they will mcome a time when people will start to become bored! I'm loving the new single from The Saturdays 'Just Can't Get Enough', a cover yes but it's very fun and bubbly! I also quite like Lady GaGa's new one 'Poker Face', it's definately a grower and can see this being her 2nd No.1!

The original version of Beggin' is now selling on 'bids' on E-Bay for around £20!
Just shows you what a reworking of an oldie can do.
While pop idol shows are good for some Leon Jackson's new single sales have collapsed this week.
It seems that cause of Swift stalling at 2 (by the way I have her only at 5) is HMV downloads and (if OCC use them) Amazon. It was available but it did not pick up strong sales all week on either site.

I would have to agree I don't think this is one of her better songs I actually prefer never again

Has anyone noticed the huge domination by American acts in the top 40?
Following the Brit Awards, it seems that people prefer the US sound of rock and R&B more. I find the charts formulaic. Celebrity sells more than musical talent. E.g. TI and Rihanna, TI and Akon, TI and Justin Timberlake. Things were better in the 1990s.

Ah - Monday Mornings - Love 'em.

I like to keep my downloads, but get very frustrated by the different versions and lack of decent tagging. I know this may not be the right place to talk about it, so if you don't mind I'll put a link up to an non-ad page which explains a little bit about what I am trying to do. An example would be, do we put:

Earth Wind and Fire and The Emotions

or

Earth, Wind, Fire & Emotions.

I actually reckon, for tagging and cataloguing purposes it should be

Earth, Wind & Fire & Emotions

http://www.stevekidd.co.uk/music/

If anyone else is bothered could we join forces? Many thanks and keep up the great work James,

Steve

Great Top 5 I think. :)

Expect to see the new "Ting Tings and Rihanna" for the top spot next week. Top 2 will surely change again. The Saturdays will likely to get to No. 1 with the charity single "Just Can't Get Enough", it's climbing fast on iTunes. Flo Rida's "Right Round" is climbing fast on iTunes as well, it's a sign that he will steal the top spot either on Sunday or the following week.

10. minardifan -
Hilarious that U2 have slid to number 20 this week! Looks like Bono's attempt at being saviour of the world has taken his attention away from promoting his band's music?

Re Steve Kidd's comment: I would suggest Earth, Wind and Fire with The Emotions.

The Saturday's hit 'Up' has continued to live up to its name, it's once again done a chart u-turn and climbed back up 4 places to number 36, currently on its 20th week inside the top 40, it has climbed back up 5 times since leaving its number 5 peak and their latest hit 'Issues' is still lurking around, on its 12th charting week at number 27.

A good chart this week as 4 new tracks fight it out for the number 1 spot which signals a new change at the top.

Personally im not sure about the new Kelly Clarkson track. Its nowhere near as good as her offerings from her first album and neither is it any more better than the last Clarkson offering "Never Again". This sounds just the same...but hey, if it aint broke then why fix it?! Plus not sure on the Taylor Swift track either. Kind of middle-of-the-road, teen jingly jangly radio friendly country pop which doesnt really go anywhere.

Surprised that i really like Rudenko 'Everybody' and even more surprised it hasnt caught on. Quite a strong club track but maybe a bit too early for its time and should have held out for the summer months before being released.

Good to see Take That back in the charts. Their new one kinda reminds me of Dexy's Midnight Runners and has a very 80's theme reminiscent about it. I quite like the way they have changed directions in sound yet again.

I wonder where the Saturdays will end up with their new single? Its very catchy. Also, does anyone know when the new release from September is due? Its called "Cant get over".

"Looks like Bono's attempt at being saviour of the world has taken his attention away from promoting his band's music?"

What????? He and the BBC have been shamelessly promoting it 24/7 for the last week - where have you been?

What I've heard of the new stuff I have not liked at all. I hope the rest of the album is more palatable.

14. Colin -
Imaani B - I think the Take That song is reminiscent of Paul Simon's "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover", especially the chorus... :)

15. CJ -
Post 13: The new September song should be released on the 9th March, its a really good tune although I prefer the Hyperzone mix on Wigan Pier, the Radio vesrion is to soft for my liking but still a good tune nonetheless.

16. James -
Why all the negative feedback on Kelly Clarkson's new single? at least its more upbeat, catchy, corny and easily gets stuck in your head and the kinda song you hate to love! The key ingredients for a traditional pop song, unlike the depressing boring former #1...

With a physical release of "Poker Face" not expected until March, Lady Gaga might score her 2nd #1 hit!!! Not anytime soon though, I think next week's #1 spot has been reserved for the Saturdays...

Hooray! For onece a Top 5 where most of them are new entries into it. Doesn't Lily Allen's fall to #5 make it one of the biggest free fallers from #1 in recent days?

I'm not really feeling Taylor Swift's single. Its a bit hit and miss...

Who the heck is still buying "Sex On Fire"!?!?!?!? (and while I'm on that matter, "Viva La Vida"!?!?)

T.I. scores another Top 10 hit? *sigh, the UK Singles Chart really is becoming too much like the Hot 100...I don't know about you guys/gals but I smell a re-release of "Whatever You Like" approaching soon...

Wow, I was expecting "Beautiful" by Akon to flop, but its in the Top 30! I wasn't predicting that at all!

17. grumpyoldgit.com -
Post 1 - last all new top 4 was on 28/01/2006 when the Arctic Monkeys led the pack with "When the Sun goes Down". There has been 7 occassions so far this decade when the top 4 have been all new including 2 all new top 6's. Now how sad of me is that?

18. Yahoo! Music User -
Well, it looks like the revival of 80s electro-pop is in full-swing. I heard that Flo Rida track, 'Right Round', the other night and discovered that, far from being the R 'n' B slow jam I was expecting, it was an upbeat dance track shamelessly taking its chorus from Dead Or Alive's biggest hit! This is surely a huge hit, and it could be fighting it out for #1 with The Saturdays' cover of an even older Depeche Mode song.

If, like me, you're now over 40 years old, a feeling of deja vu is inescapable, not least as Morrissey and U2 are also being discussed in this thread. I'm coming to the conclusion that, contrary to the popular saying, they do make records just like they used to today!

It's good to see that James reads other peoples blogs on here.
he has repeated what i said last week, about the title, Love Story only being a hit a few times, and Taylor Swift being the highest placed hit with the title.
Shame she's not number 1, as it's much better than Kelly Clarkson.
Good to see the very catchy song from Take That climbing steadily, and with physical sales this week, should see it nicely in the top 10 next week.
Does anyone else think that part of the tune sounds like 50 ways to leave your lover, by Paul Simon?.

20. Yahoo! Music User -
Post 8, sadly the charts here, are getting clogged up with the American stuff, and you only need to look at the billboard top 50 each week, to see what will be a hit over here in the coming weeks, especially all the rubbish r&b & hip hop.
With Kelly Clarkson climbing from 103 to number 1 this week, does that mean that she now officially holds the record for the highest climb to the top, recently held by Pink with So What, or are there some technicalities which prevents that happening.
