Week Ending July 5th 2008

Posted Mon 30 Jun 2008 10:41AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

So after all the sensation it caused, 'Viva La Vida' turns out to be a one week wonder, dipping down the singles chart one place to leave the way clear for Ne-Yo to add the icing on the cake and climb to Number One as 'Closer' finally goes physical. It means the US star finally has a second chart-topping single in the UK, following on from his debut 'So Sick' which made a sensational 18-1 leap in April 2006. Despite only debuting as a recording star just over two years ago, his musical output since has been quite prodigious, 'Closer' the lead single from what will be his third studio album 'Year Of The Gentleman' set for release in August. Technically speaking this is actually his second encounter with a Number One this year, Ne-Yo also having penned 'Take A Bow' which Rihanna took to the top just a few weeks ago.

'Closer' tops the chart after what has been a rather steady eight week climb. For all the talk of the singles market now having reverted to old-fashioned ways, Number One hits tend to be the ones that buck the trend by entering high and staying there. Assuming we regard 'Singin' In The Rain' has having been a new entry rather than a climber when it hit the top, then 'Closer' is in fact the first Number One single to begin its chart career outside the Top 20 since 'About You Now' from the Sugababes jumped to the top from an initial Number 35 entry. Perhaps even more significantly it is the first single to top the charts as late as 8 weeks into its chart career for well over a decade. The last single with such a slow burn to its name was 'Never Ever' from All Saints which finally hit the top in January 1998 in its ninth week on sale, Ne-Yo just edging out 'You're Beautiful' from James Blunt which had a seven week trek to the summit in 2005, and as a commenter below has pointed out equals the eight week wait endured by Steps with 'Heartbeat/Tragedy' in early 1999. 'Closer' actually entered the chart before any of the four singles that have preceded it at Number One.

Not that we should discount 'Viva La Vida' completely of course. As noted last week, its topped the chart with little assistance from the usual promotional tools, such as a scheduled release and even a video that can be played on television. I'm tempted to suggest the single has more life in it yet and a second wind that for the moment is little more than a gentle breeze.

Joining the two singles in the Top 3 is 'No Air' from Jordin Sparks which soars seven places from last weeks Number 10. The single is now the biggest ever UK hit for an American Idol winner, her reality show contemporary Kelly Clarkson having never made it any further than Number 5 ('Since You've Been Gone', her third hit holding that particular honour). 'No Air' is still a download-only single and although the impact of physical versions is steadily growing less, we cannot rule out the possibility that its physical release on July 7 will be the final boost it needs to hit the very top. The progress of the single means an even further chart triumph for featured duettist Chris Brown whose own single 'Forever' also climbs the chart to claim the Number 4 slot.

It is at this point I'm trying to conjure up the last time any artist managed simultaneous Top 5 hits on the singles chart. This is one of those where I'm prepared to be stood corrected if anyone has a better memory than I do, but in the absence of any evidence to the contrary I'm going to suggest that Chris Brown is the first person to do the double since Whitney Houston had both 'I Will Always Love You' and 'I'm Every Woman' in the Top 5 way back February 1993. Comments below if you think you know different.

The only song to join club Top 10 this week is 'We Made It' from Busta Rhymes and Linkin Park, perhaps showing that the rock-hop concept can indeed work its magic for a second time. The single is now Linkin Park's fifth Top 10 hit single and their first since 'What I've Done' was a Number 6 hit in April last year. As if in sympathy the inevitable has happened and 'Numb/Encore' has returned for another wander around the lower end of the chart, landing at Number 64 this week. 'We Made It' has a little more gas in the tank of course, the single going physical this week (June 30).

As a result the biggest new entry of the week is denied a place in the Top 10 but can still be quite satisfied with its Number 11 placing. The track in questions is 'Stay With Me', the debut single for Ironik, a DJ and producer from London who at one stage laid claim to being the most popular unsigned act on MySpace. The production of his first hit owes a great deal to the likes of Kanye West and Akon, his vocals on the rather moving track intercut with a heavily pitch shifted sampled chorus. Although for that reason alone the track is little more than a copy of 'Through The Wire' or 'Lonely', its emotional subject matter and Ironik's heartfelt delivery give it just that extra spark of originality to make this an extremely worthwhile debut indeed. Those wondering just where the high pitched vocals come from may be in for a shock, the sample being from of all things an old Westlife album track 'Written In The Stars', the single also starting with a pitch shifted snatch of 90s standard 'Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)'. Physical sales get added to the mix next week and I would love to see this superb single end up Top 5 as a result.

Also new to the Top 20 are bequiffed Glasgow rockers Glasvegas who make Number 16 first week out with their major label 'Geraldine'. Formed just a couple of years ago, the group found themselves the subject of a bidding war following the release of their early self-funded singles. Their first ever chart hit is a suitably atmospheric celtic rock anthem, the mellow wall of sound of their guitars calling to mind fellow superstar scots such as Runrig or Big Country. Chalk this single up as a worthy debut, and here's to plenty more hits from their debut album, set for the stores in early September.

Having first crept into the Top 40 four weeks ago after exposure on an iTunes advert, 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' from the Ting Tings makes a reappearance at its highest chart position yet as it is officially confirmed as their next single release and intensifies its airplay as a result. Having spent the past couple of weeks just outside the Top 40, the track now vaults to Number 24 in plenty of time for a scheduled July 21 release for its physical version. Meanwhile 'That's Not My Name' shows few signs of burning out and is still a Top 10 single at Number 8.

At the other end of the success scale we have Mariah Carey who once again proves that you are only ever as good as your last hit. Despite 'Touch My Body' being a Top 5 hit, the followup 'Bye Bye' has had a rather torrid time of it as a download hit, spending the last five weeks on the edge of the Top 40 without ever quite managing to take that final step. Physical release of the track finally pushes it above the horizon but the single can still only make Number 30, essentially making this one of her lowest charting singles ever. Only four of her hits have ever charted lower in this country, the first three coming at the very start of her career when she struggled to match her phenomenal American success on these shores. Her only post-stardom single to chart lower was 2001s 'Never Too Far', the second release from the nearly career-ruining 'Glitter' album.

With regards to the last time someone had two top 5 singles, WE 6th Sept 2003, Sean Paul was at No.2 with Blue Cantrell (Credited as Blue Cantrell featuring Sean Paul) with the song "Breathe" and he was at No.3 on his own with "Like Glue"

Good to see Snow Patrol back in the 75 with the unbiquious "Chasing Cars" - its first showing since the chart of 29th March this year. It's been hanging around inside the top 100 since then and has now been a top 100 song for 95 weeks spending 79 of them inside the top 75 if I'm not very much mistaken.

3. Matthew -
I'm totally surprised that Mariah Carey only managed No.30 this week with her fab new song 'Bye Bye'. I think this definately deserved a better position.

4. Graham -
Mariah - No.30 - worlds most successful female artist! Pish - America's most successful femail artist, yes, but worldwide - I seriously doubt it!

5. Emyr -
Nice to see all those classics in the bottom end of the top 75, let's try & get them back in the top 40, Bon Jovi, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jay-Z/Linkin Park, surprised Queen never re-entered the top 40 & also try & get Chasing Cars higher.

I think Heartbeat by Steps hit number one on it's 8th week in January 1999

A lot of artists scored 2 top 5 hits at the same time.
The charts is becoming more and more boring and more and more predictable, you only need to look at the i-tunes chart to know who will be number 1 the following week.
The death of the physical charts led to the death of the charts. It was way better when we had new entries at number 1 and number 2 and 6 in the top 10.
Now it's simply boring.

I am shocked at the poor performance of Mariah Carey's Bye Bye. I honestly believe it is one of her better singles in recent years and it certainly deserves a higher chart position than number 30. Then again the single has done surprisingly poorly in the States aswell, reaching a peak of number 19 and then slwly falling down the chart. In relation to the US Charts our new number one single Ne Yo's Closer has only reached a peak of number 25 after 10 weeks on the chart, it falls 2 places to 27 this week. With Leona Lewis, Natasha Bedingfield and Coldplay inside the top 6, the Brits are doin well in the States at the min .... Surprisingly though Estelle & Kanye have stalled at 35, I really hope this position improves . . .It would be great to have another Top 10 Brit Hit . . As for Rhianna & Maroon 5 here in the UK Charts . . Falling from 28 to 41 and physical release is yet to come . . It shows there are limitations to Rhianna's power . . .Even she can't save Maroon 5's fading pop career. . . It's not the worst song though . .

Hope Coldplay return to no. 1, been a while since a track did a rebound.

Looking forward to Chicane & Natasha mash coming out, should do well here.

Leona should do the new Bond Theme.

Prefer the charts as they are, not as predictable as it used to be, when a new song comes out and goes straight to no.1 in it's first week - now that was simply boring!

I can't see Estelle hittin the top 10 next week with her new single Substitute Love . . It hits the shops this week but only floating at a position of 52 this week I can't see her coming anywhere near matching the success of American Boy . . It's a shame but I think her comeback could be shortlived . . . A huge climber this week is The Kooks with their fantastic new song Shine On . . Up to 62 from 111 I can see it hitting the top 5 when it is releashed later this month .. I'm surprised Nickelback's new song Photograph has stalled at 26, it's a decent single but obviously n match for "Rockstar", this week's number 40 . . I think Madonna & Ting Tings will hit the Top 10 in no time with their new offerings . . As will Basshunter who leap up to 58 from 75, All I Ever Wanted is a cracker of a tune . . . I'm surprised that Natasha Bedingfied's new single "Pocketful of Sunshine" has't hit the top 75 yet . . It's only out n downloads at the min but in my opinion it deserves a top 5 position here in the UK . . It has reached number 5 in the US, a fantastic achievement, she has made it big time over there with no Simon Cowell's to help her . . Her album has als hit the top 10 . . Her last single Love Like This was great but only managed number 20 here in the UK . . She has had some great tracks in the past, Single (number 3 in May 2004), These Words (number 1 in Aug 04) ,number 6 hit with Unwritten and number 7 with I Wanna Have Your Babies and Soulmate . . . I hope Pocketful of Sunshine does the business and hits the big time

Hope Madonna gets higher next week, she seems to have stalled at 25 for two weeks. Two more weeks before the CD comes out though. Any idea how long Madonna and JT's single has been on the charts for? Must be about 15 weeks.

James how come you never make any reference to the Irish Charts?!!! Our chart here in Ireland is actually quite interesting and different from the Uk . . eg Chris Brown's Forever was last week's number 1 in Ireland . . . It's also quite interesting with respect that it's actually quite difficult to reach the top 10 . . Duffy's Warwick Avenue recently missed out on the top 10 . . Surprising I know . Anyone interested in looking up the Irish chart go to www.irma.ie/aucharts.asp

13. Ian -
It has to be said that the Irish chart, while having its distinct traits, plays second fiddle to the British charts most of the time, and its sales are particularly insignificant, hence the lack of interest.

Have a look at the Irish best sellers of 2007, and you'll see that there's but a cigarette paper-thin difference between those and the British ones.

14. Yahoo! Music User -
Well obviously Ian when Ireland has a population of 6.1 million and the UK has more than 3 times the population, the sales of music aren't going to be as "significant" as those in the UK . . .

15. Iain -
Comment 7 cruise control - I looked at the itunes chart on Saturday and Coldplay was still no.1 with 'Viva La Vida'. Proof perhaps that physical sales still, for the moment, make a difference to chart positions. And 'Violet Hill' took a 10 place dip this week, despite being in what seemed a 'weak' area of the chart which saw Jonas Brothers and Sam Sparro climb.

I don't think The Kooks new single will make a big impact and don't expect Madonna's 'Give it 2 me' to have the same staying power as '4 minutes' has enjoyed. I predict 'Give it to me' will peak in the top 5 but will drop away quickly.

As for Maroon5 and Rihanna, as a commenter suggested last week, it looks like their record company knows the track is doomed and may save themselves the embarrassment of a physical release.

16. brett -
I have a feeling Viva La Vida may never get a physical release. I couldn't agree less with Cruise Control. At the point where there were top 10's jam packed with new entries and everything else moving down the chart was the WORST time in chart history. You always knew 99.9% that a song was never going any higher than its entry position, what is exciting about that?

17. Mario N -
i totally agree with "Brett" - it's so much more exciting to anticipate a particular track to rise on the chart instead of seeing them fading. (read the comment above. i cant be bothered to extrapolate)

18. this charming man -
The charts have been boring for years now, you just need to see what happened to charts programmes on TV and the rather pathetic choice of Radio 1 DJs who "star" on Sunday afternoons. Speaking of which, I really miss James' acerbic comments on the 2 stooges who used to do the Radio 1 Chart Show (forget the names now) - I wonder what do you think of these 2, James? Make you want to set fire to the stereo, surely.
Anyway, good thing about digital vs. physical is that no resources (oil, paper, etc..) are wasted on the production of abominations such as "Singing in the Rain".

re All Saints v Steps:
All Saints actually hit the top spot not in their eighth, but in their ninth week on chart. "Never Ever" moved 3-5-6-5-4-4-4-2-1.
Steps reached the summit in their eighth week, "Heartbeat" meandering 2-5-5-8-8-6-4-1.
So Ne-Yo has equalled Step*'s achievement, but missed out on All Saints'.
Mention must of course be made of Celine Dion, whose "Think Twice" had a 16 week voyage to the top back in 1994/95.
If you count weeks in the Top10 before reaching #1, then All Saints and Dion are par with 9 in front of Steps' 8. Ne-Yo had 5.

20. AJG -
I think the last artist to have two top 5 simultaneous hits was Elton John, who was at 2 with 2Pac on Ghetto Gospel and at 4 with Electricity in July 2005.
