Week Ending July 5th 2008

Posted Mon 30 Jun 2008 10:41AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

So after all the sensation it caused, 'Viva La Vida' turns out to be a one week wonder, dipping down the singles chart one place to leave the way clear for Ne-Yo to add the icing on the cake and climb to Number One as 'Closer' finally goes physical. It means the US star finally has a second chart-topping single in the UK, following on from his debut 'So Sick' which made a sensational 18-1 leap in April 2006. Despite only debuting as a recording star just over two years ago, his musical output since has been quite prodigious, 'Closer' the lead single from what will be his third studio album 'Year Of The Gentleman' set for release in August. Technically speaking this is actually his second encounter with a Number One this year, Ne-Yo also having penned 'Take A Bow' which Rihanna took to the top just a few weeks ago.

'Closer' tops the chart after what has been a rather steady eight week climb. For all the talk of the singles market now having reverted to old-fashioned ways, Number One hits tend to be the ones that buck the trend by entering high and staying there. Assuming we regard 'Singin' In The Rain' has having been a new entry rather than a climber when it hit the top, then 'Closer' is in fact the first Number One single to begin its chart career outside the Top 20 since 'About You Now' from the Sugababes jumped to the top from an initial Number 35 entry. Perhaps even more significantly it is the first single to top the charts as late as 8 weeks into its chart career for well over a decade. The last single with such a slow burn to its name was 'Never Ever' from All Saints which finally hit the top in January 1998 in its ninth week on sale, Ne-Yo just edging out 'You're Beautiful' from James Blunt which had a seven week trek to the summit in 2005, and as a commenter below has pointed out equals the eight week wait endured by Steps with 'Heartbeat/Tragedy' in early 1999. 'Closer' actually entered the chart before any of the four singles that have preceded it at Number One.

Not that we should discount 'Viva La Vida' completely of course. As noted last week, its topped the chart with little assistance from the usual promotional tools, such as a scheduled release and even a video that can be played on television. I'm tempted to suggest the single has more life in it yet and a second wind that for the moment is little more than a gentle breeze.

Joining the two singles in the Top 3 is 'No Air' from Jordin Sparks which soars seven places from last weeks Number 10. The single is now the biggest ever UK hit for an American Idol winner, her reality show contemporary Kelly Clarkson having never made it any further than Number 5 ('Since You've Been Gone', her third hit holding that particular honour). 'No Air' is still a download-only single and although the impact of physical versions is steadily growing less, we cannot rule out the possibility that its physical release on July 7 will be the final boost it needs to hit the very top. The progress of the single means an even further chart triumph for featured duettist Chris Brown whose own single 'Forever' also climbs the chart to claim the Number 4 slot.

It is at this point I'm trying to conjure up the last time any artist managed simultaneous Top 5 hits on the singles chart. This is one of those where I'm prepared to be stood corrected if anyone has a better memory than I do, but in the absence of any evidence to the contrary I'm going to suggest that Chris Brown is the first person to do the double since Whitney Houston had both 'I Will Always Love You' and 'I'm Every Woman' in the Top 5 way back February 1993. Comments below if you think you know different.

The only song to join club Top 10 this week is 'We Made It' from Busta Rhymes and Linkin Park, perhaps showing that the rock-hop concept can indeed work its magic for a second time. The single is now Linkin Park's fifth Top 10 hit single and their first since 'What I've Done' was a Number 6 hit in April last year. As if in sympathy the inevitable has happened and 'Numb/Encore' has returned for another wander around the lower end of the chart, landing at Number 64 this week. 'We Made It' has a little more gas in the tank of course, the single going physical this week (June 30).

As a result the biggest new entry of the week is denied a place in the Top 10 but can still be quite satisfied with its Number 11 placing. The track in questions is 'Stay With Me', the debut single for Ironik, a DJ and producer from London who at one stage laid claim to being the most popular unsigned act on MySpace. The production of his first hit owes a great deal to the likes of Kanye West and Akon, his vocals on the rather moving track intercut with a heavily pitch shifted sampled chorus. Although for that reason alone the track is little more than a copy of 'Through The Wire' or 'Lonely', its emotional subject matter and Ironik's heartfelt delivery give it just that extra spark of originality to make this an extremely worthwhile debut indeed. Those wondering just where the high pitched vocals come from may be in for a shock, the sample being from of all things an old Westlife album track 'Written In The Stars', the single also starting with a pitch shifted snatch of 90s standard 'Everybody's Free (To Feel Good)'. Physical sales get added to the mix next week and I would love to see this superb single end up Top 5 as a result.

Also new to the Top 20 are bequiffed Glasgow rockers Glasvegas who make Number 16 first week out with their major label 'Geraldine'. Formed just a couple of years ago, the group found themselves the subject of a bidding war following the release of their early self-funded singles. Their first ever chart hit is a suitably atmospheric celtic rock anthem, the mellow wall of sound of their guitars calling to mind fellow superstar scots such as Runrig or Big Country. Chalk this single up as a worthy debut, and here's to plenty more hits from their debut album, set for the stores in early September.

Having first crept into the Top 40 four weeks ago after exposure on an iTunes advert, 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' from the Ting Tings makes a reappearance at its highest chart position yet as it is officially confirmed as their next single release and intensifies its airplay as a result. Having spent the past couple of weeks just outside the Top 40, the track now vaults to Number 24 in plenty of time for a scheduled July 21 release for its physical version. Meanwhile 'That's Not My Name' shows few signs of burning out and is still a Top 10 single at Number 8.

At the other end of the success scale we have Mariah Carey who once again proves that you are only ever as good as your last hit. Despite 'Touch My Body' being a Top 5 hit, the followup 'Bye Bye' has had a rather torrid time of it as a download hit, spending the last five weeks on the edge of the Top 40 without ever quite managing to take that final step. Physical release of the track finally pushes it above the horizon but the single can still only make Number 30, essentially making this one of her lowest charting singles ever. Only four of her hits have ever charted lower in this country, the first three coming at the very start of her career when she struggled to match her phenomenal American success on these shores. Her only post-stardom single to chart lower was 2001s 'Never Too Far', the second release from the nearly career-ruining 'Glitter' album.

Mariah Carey's Bye Bye is one of the better songs in the album? ppffpf! I'm so glad that the UK and the rest of the world outside the US do not embrace her [profane]eous, over-the-top 'ballads'. She does some good singles but her music is sounding the same.. Boriah!

I couldn't agree more about the pathetic choices of DJ's on Radio 1 chart show. I haven't been a regular listener since Mark Goodier left. Mark and Bruno were excellent presenters and even though at the time when Mark left the charts were incredibly dull and predictable, he still made them exciting. Nowadays its more of a variety show than a top 40 and what annoys me the most is how the presenters express opinions about the songs. Mark was too professional for that. Can you imagine how the chart show would be now with records climbing the way they are and with Mark presenting? That would be a dream for me. Unfortunately the chart show has gone the same way as the rest of radio 1 - [profane].

Yes Jamesae, that would be correct!! Madonna & JT are in the charts now for 15 weeks with 4 Minutes . . . It debuted at number 7 on the chart for the week ending 29/03/2008 . . . I have to say I'm not impressed with her new single Give It 2 Me . . Obviously it will make the top 10 but I can't see it hitting the top 3 . . . The track is no worthy successor to 4 Minutes . . There are much better songs than this on Hard Candy eg Heartbeat

The Glasvegas song is nothing like either Runrig or Big Country. Honestly, if you have to compare them to another Scottish band, then surely the Jesus & Mary Chain are their closest contemporaries.

I would've thought.

I don't mind the chart presenters on radio 1 having a bit of banter but they should still be able to put out a professional show.

They regularly get the numbers and artists mixed up. The other week I heard Fearne say 'we've already read that one out' and as if that wasn't bad enough, the track was actually still to come!

It can't be that much to ask to get someone with a passion for the charts to present the show. Someone who would actually do some research and throw in the odd stat here and there. Bring back Mark Goodier.

I love the fact that someone has sampled a Westlife song.

Do we expect a bunch of Abba re-entries with the release of the Mamma Mia film?

I find it's not the charts that are boring, it's the songs in the charts these days. How anyone can call Ironik's track original is beyond me!

I alos quite like Fearne and Reggie - it's a countdown of songs, some of which are no good. They at least make the show listenable.

28. Mark -
I like the fact that songs now climb the charts rather that enter at their highest position, but I don't agree with downloads being available so far ahead of the songs physical release. I think a release date should be a release date.

michael 787, Jennifer Rush also had a 16 week climb to number one with "The Power of Love". And talking about simultaneous Top 5 hits, what song by the same artist (and same version)was simultaneously at Number 1 and Number 2? Think I've got this right, but the answer's a bit of a cheat!

Interesting to see that Leona Lewis has shot up to number 87 this week from last week's 103 with her flawless comeback single Bleedin' Love, wonder where that has come fom!! Amazingly Rhianna & Jay Z are still in the top 100, this week up to 86 from 95. Umbrella must be on the chart now for at least 13 months . . . Does ne 1 actually know how many wks its on d chart now?? Hate Ironik's Stay With Me, hope it bombs down the chart nxt up!!

31. Iain -
Rihanna has been in the chart for 59 weeks with her Umbrellla. I would guess that Bleeding Love climbed following the Nelson Mandella concert.

I expect Glastonbury to have an effect on the singles chart on Sunday, Numb/Encore and 99 Problems should get a boost.

I am so GLAD to see Mariah Carey stall at no.30 - Listen up Ms Carey what the UK record buying public are saying is this "you might be able to release any old bit of rubbish and reach number 1 in USA, because they have no taste! In the UK we like music with a bit more substance, whining over a dull r n b beat with some bloke rapping over it or simply going 'uh uh' a few times does not constitute substance! That is why you failed with this single, not that your last was any good either. Gone are the days when you used to make decent pop-songs like Someday, Emotions, Make it Happen and Dreamlover. What you need to accept Ms Carey is that you are a POP star, nothing more, Madonna, Kylie, Britney they all know they are pop and work with what they've got. stop taking yourself so seriously, stop thinking you are more credible than you are, stop being such a b*tch, cheer the hell up, sing clearly instead of whining and stop releasing such paint dryingly dull drivel as you have since you've gone 'rNb' then you may get back to the height your career reached in 93/94, until then may you forever have near misses and complete flops!'

Hi James

I think you're being a bit too quick to claim that Jordin Sparks is already more successful in the UK than Kelly Clarkson just because she's gone two places higher in the singles chart. Since U Been Gone did spend a long time on the chart and let's not forget the album sold more than a million copies here. Jordin has yet to prove herself because the album is frankly rubbish.

BTW you're still saying Gabriella Cilmi wrong on the podcast.. I believe it's pronounced "Chill me" ;)

Oh dear . . . Estelle is number 30 in the midweek chart with No Substitute Love, I anticipated that the single would miss out on the top 10 as it was only number 52 last week (and let's be honest it's a trashy enough track!) but I expected it to at least crack the top 15 or 20 . . . She needs to come back with a killer of a comeback single next time (that's if her record company commission another release) . . Shockin choice of single, video dull too . . .This has disaster written all over it . . . Speaking of DISASTER If I Never See Your Face Again (Rhianna's collaboration with Maroon 5) seems to be doing equally as bad . . . I would say it's the biggest mistake in Rhianna's career to agree to collaborate with a fading, third class act . . . Speaking of Rhianna, her next single is going to be Rehab . . due out in Aug but yet Disturbia seems to be doin the business in the States . . number 11 this week (up from 18) . . I think the wise decision would be to release Disturbia next as I imagine it will be the next single after Rehab . . But doin so well on downloads with Disturbia, can all the hype last until OCT or NOV when she puts out the next single??? Her chart history is impressing to date . . all singles have been smash top 5 hits with the exception of If It's lovin that u want (number 11) and her collaboration with Ne-Yo . (num 15) Hate How Much I Love U . . Really surprised that single stalled at 15 . . Don't understad why???? Obviously it wasn't related to her excellent album sales as Don't Stop The Music, the album's 4th single hit number 4 . . So with Umbrella, Shut Up & Drive, Hate That I Luv U, Please Don't Stop The Music, Take A Bow, If I Never See Your Face Again, Rehab and Disturbia ( i shall imagine) 8 singles releashed off the 1 album (and managing to successfully pull almost all of them off) has ne other artist managed this???

35. Iain -
At least Mariah Carey's no.30 position is credible compared to Craig David's 'Officially yours' which failed to even make the top 150 this week.

Numb/Encore seems certain to be in or around the top 40 come Sunday, following Jay-Z's appearance at Glastonbury. It's also set to make chart history in the near future. Presently "5,6,7,8" by Steps holds the title as the chart song that has sold the most copies without making the top 10 - sales were said to be about 310,000 copies a few years ago. Sales of Numb/Encore to Saturday June 21, the week prior to the period this chart covers, were officially 307,989 (source: Alan Jones/Music Week 28/06/08).

Of course Steps sold their amount in a much shorter time frame but in the current climate 300,000+ sales for a non-top 10 hit is good. Both songs managed to peak at the same position - number 14.

User 34, I think Estelle has made the same mistake that many artists make these days, she had a smash hit and didn't allow it to run its course before releasing the next single. "American boy" is still so popular, she should have waited a couple of months. As for Rihanna, I can't fathom why "Hate that I love you" failed to climb any higher than no 15 it's my favourite of hers!

38. Yahoo! Music User -
I found an even more recent artist with two top 5 hits in the same week: Timbaland. The week of September 16, 2006, he was #2 with Justin Timberlake on "Sexyback" and #3 with Nelly Furtado on "Promiscuous."

39. Malcolm -
If Estelle does manage 8 single hits from one album, it is indeed impressive - correct me if I'm wrong but the nearest anyone can come close to that is Michael Jackson who had six hit singles from the 'Thriller' album.

Wow. Chris Brown's early struggles on the charts seem to have had an interesting turn this year, having scored 2 top ten hits in his career so far this year (and 3 if you count no air) and he looks to be another chhart hit superstar here in the UK. I think the opposite of that can be illustrated by poor Craig David whos latest singles seem to be struggling, ie "6 of 1 thing" barely scraped the top 40, and "Officially Yours," hasn't even reach the top 100. He hasn't had a top 10 since "Hot Stuff" last year, so his future chart performances don't look vey promising. Plus i don't see Maroon 5/Rihanna even reaching the top 20 tommorrow, as it has fallen out of the top 40 after hanging around the bottom half of the top 30 for a while now. Ah well, its not even a good song in my opinion. Congrats on both Coldplay AND Ne-yo scoring number 1 hits, and im predcting the next number 1 will be No Air by Jordin Sparks lol anything as long as it is not dizzy rascal's Dance With Me!
