Chart Bite - Sunday May 3rd 2009

Posted Sun 3 May 2009 8:39PM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

It isn't every day the biggest chart headlines are made by a 67 year old man, but then again Bob Dylan is no ordinary recording artist.

His brand new album 'Together Through Life' ends an extraordinary 39 year drought to become his first Number One recording in this country since 'New Morning' hit the top in late 1970. Not that he hasn't come close since, hitting Number 2 with 'Street Legal' and 'Slow Train Coming' in 1978 and 1979 whilst the arrival of the 21st century has seen him have his best run of chart albums since his recording heyday. 'Love And Theft' in 2001 and 'Modern Times' in 2006 both made Number 3 so you could kind of say this has been coming.

In all 'Together Through Life' is Dylan's seventh Number One album in the UK.

On the singles chart there is no change at the top, Tinchy Stryder and N-Dubz grabbing a second week at the summit with 'Number 1', keeping La Roux's 'In For The Kill' locked at Number 2. The Grime scene can also claim the biggest new hit of the week as Ironik and Chipmunk crash in at Number 3 with 'Tiny Dancer (Hold Me Closer)' which also gives a chart credit to the man whose original song is sampled extensively by the track - Elton John.

Check back later for Chart Watch UK, with all the inside stories of the biggest hits of the week.

well done Mr Zimmerman

Dylan may as well be said to be 68 - he's 67 Years &
49 Weeks old. (68 on Sunday May 24th).
It isn't his first No. 'recording' in the UK, since November
1970. ('New Morning').
He went to No.1 in June 2007, as one of The Traveling
Wilburys. ('The Traveling Wilburys Collection').

The 3rd single for the UK is 'love game' with the 4th being 'paparazzi'.
'Eh eh' won't be released as a single in the UK.

I wonder if Elton John will ever have another hit again with a totally new song?

And I see Morrissey has failed to make the top 40 with his new song, seeing how his songs plummet down the chart on week two, I guess we can expect it to drop into obscurity next week?

I can't believe how bob dylan can be no.1 .. no.75 raphael is even better and this album incluedes magic " stevie wonder " duet..

eminem couldn't reached no.1 with his boring song

elton john went no.3 with youngs, after years. He used "Blue" before.

Best song in the chart "marmaduke lover" failed unfortunately..

Placebo's comeback weren't good enough. Couldn't reach top 75.

Yeah's zero left the top 75 unfortunately, and take that's garden released 20th april, but still couldn't reach top 75

Pussycat's re-relase entered no8, but I don't understand , their singles successful in charts, but their album can't sell well

a1.... I do not want to confuse you more but she has completed videos for both Paparazzi and Lovegame and I am led to believe that it will be Paparazzi next and Lovegame to follow... but hey Johnny could also be right because it is not definite..... She needs to change the vibe from the two NUMBER ONES.. which is why I think it will be Paparazzi.... lets see... Johnny may be able to add cast iron news......

cetin K .... Placebo's Battle for the sun is not released until late May... the album of the same name drops on June 8th.

I also adore the Marmaduke Duke single... great , great pop song...

The song I am really loving at the moment is Empire of the Sun- We are the people... absolutely superb Summer tune with an amazing video shot in Mexico ( a long time ago ! ).. to me this is what pop music so exciting.... the single is released on June 1st..

I just wonder how The Enemy are feeling this morning.... they become the first band from Coventry to have a NUMBER ONE album with We'll Live and die in these towns... and then they wake up today to see they are number two behind the great Bob Dylan...

Elton John also hit NUMBER 1 with Ghetto Gospel in a mix with Tupac !

Grime is a music that was born in East London, lives in East London... and maybe only makes sense in East London. It is a mutt genre, a bastard blend of street English, Jamaican dancehall reggae and two kinds of rave music: (1) drum ’n’ bass, an electronic party monster built from breakbeats, or loops fashioned from the percussive “breakdown” sections of other songs; (2) a U.K. delicacy called garage, which rhymes with carriage and feels like R&B running a fever. The sum is a fast clatter of syncopated claps, alien chirps and machine bursts. Grime vocalists resemble turbo-charged rappers, racing to match backing tracks that thump about 130 times per minute — near your target heart rate for vigorous physical activity. Ironik +Elton John) is pop music not grime. Tinchy Stryder ( N-Dubz) also has become pop music. They are not listed in the garage charts at all.

just saw that 'papparazzi' will be 3rd single in the UK. 'love game' won't be getting a release because it's too full on for the UK market :|
So of lady gaga's 5 singles only 3 have received a release in the UK :O

13. a1 -
ahh i heard that "Love Game" was meant to be to risque for the UK market!!
the video has been given a "M +15" rating here, so its not getting much video play .seriously , with all the whores in rap videos its a bit of a joke they are targeting Gaga..jealousy i'd say!!
Eh Eh is so different but i love it.think it would be a great UK single, but Love Game is the killa song...up to a new peak of 4 in Oz this week!!
oh and Paparazzi.the perfect Gwen single :)

14. a1 -
I think Eh Eh is /will only be an australian single :)
