Chart Bite - Sunday May 17th 2009

Posted Sun 17 May 2009 8:18PM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

There is a brand new Number One on the official UK Singles chart this week as 'Boom Boom Pow' from the Black Eyed Peas shoots straight to the top. Their first chart hit since 2006, the single is taken from their forthcoming new album 'The E.N.D.' and marks something of a comeback for the four-piece, with members Fergie and will.i.am having varying degrees of solo success in the interval.

'Boom Boom Pow' is their second Number One single, their first since 'Where Is The Love' spent six weeks at the top of the chart in 2003.

Meanwhile on the album chart, congratulations to Green Day who have their second Number One with '21st Century Breakdown', home to their current chart single 'Know Your Enemy'. Their previous chart-topper was 2004s critically acclaimed 'American Idiot'.

Watch out next week for the rise of the Eurovision hits. Not only is UK entry Jade Ewen's 'My Time' set to improve on its curret chart placing of Number 50, but we could see a spectacular debut for winning song 'Fairytale' by Alexander Rybak.

WHY was the physical release of Jade's song delayed till AFTER the show?! Has that EVER happened before in the history of UK Eurovision entries?

Norway was a worthy winner.... but in my view a shame Malta didn't do better!

Still, well done jade to make the top 5 - fantastic performance - even though ALW really could have written an even better song if he'd put his mind to it....

And why won't anyone in UK admit the reason that we came last in 2008 was not entirely political! Controversial view maybe - but mine is that Andy A's song last year was the UK's worst entry EVER... I LIKE Andy as a SINGER [but not as a song-writer...] I voted for him on XF & even bought his first album, but his self-penned Euro-song was retro-rubbish... If the British public had truly liked it, then it would have been a huge hit despite the biased voting. But it wasn't....

On the other hand, this time next week, as James suggests, Jade and the Norwegian fairy tale may be fighting it out in the Top 10?

Why was the singles chart announced so late?

I was looking at all the usual sites and they still had Tinchy Stryder at number one! Even now I can't find a full copy of the top forty the day after!

There is a brilliant remix available of the Black Eyed Peas song posted in the commentary above on dance compilation albums that puts this version to shame.
