Week Ending May 23rd 2009

Posted Mon 18 May 2009 9:36AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Nothing stays the same forever, not even stagnating charts. The cosy familiarity of the Top 10 is shattered this week by a brand new Number One single crashing straight in upon release.

'Boom Boom Pow' marks the musical reunion of the Black Eyed Peas and their return to the charts after a three year absence. In the intervening period both Fergie and will.i.am have managed varying degrees of solo success but it is clearly the presence of all four members on record together which inspires the biggest sales. It may not be the greatest single of their career and for sure is up there with 'My Humps' in terms of lyrical bizarreness but there is no escaping the fact that the single returns Black Eyed Peas to the top of the chart for the first time in almost six years. September 2003 was the last time they released a single which ventured this high, that record the now classic 'Where Is The Love', a track which managed a six week run at the top - at the time the 21st century's longest running chart-topper. Something tells me that 'Boom Boom Pow' won't have quite the same run of success - more on that later - but for the moment it re-establishes them as chart royalty and sets up nicely the release next month of brand new album 'The E.N.D.'.

On the album chart the runaway winners are Green Day who storm to Number One with '21st Century Breakdown', this despite the lacklustre performance of lead single 'Know Your Enemy' which made Number 21 and is presently loitering around the bottom end of the Top 40. It is their second chart-topper, following global smash 'American Idiot' which also hit the summit upon release in October 2004.

Their biggest challenge next week is almost certain to come from Eminem whose long-awaited comeback album 'Relapse' hits the shops this week. In anticipation of this its promotion stepped up a gear last week. Lead single 'We Made You' was granted a physical release and the resultant boost in sales elevates it to a new chart peak of Number 4, making this his sixth single to peak at that position (the most recent being leak "promotional track" 'Crack A Bottle' back in February. Although 'We Made You' is officially his current single, his label has been drip feeding selected tracks from the album to iTunes over the past few weeks. First came '3AM' which appeared at Number 56 a fortnight ago. Last week it was the turn of 'Old Times Sake' which could only manage to make Number 87 (although it does belatedly accelerate to Number 61 this week). For the third week of the promotion 'Beautiful' has been selected for release and this one becomes the most successful of all, landing at Number 38 to give the star two simultaneous Top 40 hits. Meanwhile 'Crack A Bottle' still has life in it and the single (which also features Dr Dre and 50 Cent) hovers at Number 69.

One veteran act showing a surprising amount of staying power are The Prodigy. Their second hit of the year 'Warriors Dance' was also granted physical status last week and the single duly shoots 13-9. Following the success of 'Omen' earlier this year it is the first time the group have managed back to back Top 10 hits since the turn of the decade. Back then the singles in question were 'Smack My Bitch Up' and 'Baby's Got A Temper', the "back to back" nature of these records slightly undermined by the fact that there were five years in between the two. Speaking of 'Omen', the single refuses to die a death. After briefly dipping out of the Top 40 a fortnight ago it reappeared at Number 40 last week and this week climbs back to Number 30, its highest chart placing for five weeks.

Prodigy and Black Eyed Peas aside, there are no other new arrivals inside the Top 10 resulting in the glass ceiling collection of mid-table hits spend another week having their numbers added to. Rising through the ranks at a rapid pace are Alesha Dixon with 'Let's Get Excited' (a 25-13 climb) and Soulja Boy Tellem featuring Sammie with 'Kiss Me Thru The Phone' which jumps 30-16. Indeed the only one of last weeks up and comers not to make a big impression appears to be Flo Rida's 'Sugar' which can only manage a six place climb this week to rest at Number 22.

Such is Akon's productivity that he has over the past two years set a new benchmark by charting with seven different singles in both 2007 and 2008, be they his own records or as guest star on someone else's. Until now his only single this year to make the Top 40 has been Number 8 hit 'Beautiful' (which actually counts as one of his seven 2008 hits as it charted for the first time just before Christmas) but that changes thanks to his starring role on Shontelle's new single 'Stuck With Each Other' which creeps into the Top 40 at Number 39. The track is a new recording which didn't appear on the original issue of her album 'Shontelligence' last year. Co-written by Diane Warren the single at the very least benefits from not sounding almost identical to someone else's record, something that couldn't exactly be said about her last single 'T-Shirt'.

The power of Britain's Got Talent rears its head again on the singles chart as following a memorable performance of the song by an auditionee last weekend 'Ain't No Sunshine' by Bill Withers lands at Number 40. It is the first time the song has been a hit single for its author in this country, the only version of the track ever to become a sizeable hit in this country was that of a 13 year old Michael Jackson whose version reached Number 8 in autumn 1972. The track is Bill Withers' first chart single since a remixed version of 'Lovely Day' hit Number 4 in September 1988.

It can be more or less taken for granted that the impact of the Eurovision Song Contest this weekend just gone will have a major impact on the singles chart next week. Leading the charge in theory should be the UK's representative Jade Ewen whose Top 5 competition finish with 'My Time' was this great nation's best result since 2002. Her single has been available for a couple of weeks now but thus far has failed to catch fire in terms of sales, sitting this week at Number 50. Given the positive reception across the continent to her performance she should be looking at a vastly improved chart position next week. Her biggest challenge however will be from runaway winner Alexander Rybak whose winning song 'Fairytale' has been generating huge online sales ever since the contest was broadcast. Is it possible that we could a Eurovision chart-topper from an overseas winner for the first time in a generation?

The BEP single is average. It is is just like the early electro tracks that used to be on the Street-sounds Crucial Electro compilations in about 1984. Will.I.Am is about my age so he would know what I'm talking about.

I don't hate BEP but this song shouldn't be number one. Just think of all the great tracks from back then (the 1980s) that still remain unknown to the masses! [Planet Rock, The Smurf, Jam On It, South Bronx etc]

I would like to see Soulja Boy Tellem get further. This has a good slow jam vibe about it. Rappers fall in love too you know!

Overall the chart is still moving very slowly as though it was mid summer.

2. Borza -
On the negative side, again just four new entries, another three rap tracks (getting beyond a joke in terms of variety) and one old classic soul song. With Dizzie Rascal likely to be No1 next week, has there ever been 3 rap No1's in a row in history? The amount of rock and dance hits are virtually non existent now.

On the positive side, lets support some of those Eurovision entries to become hits next week. Please download Alexander Rybak, Yohanna, Urban Symphony and Jade. They deserve to become hits. It was a great contest.

How come none of the usual sources for the latest top 75 have updated yet? Not even the top 40 on the BBC Radio 1 site.
James can you sort them out?

4. Simon -
Are Black Eyed Peas trying to cash in on Eurovision with a title like Boom Boom Pow? At least no country in Eurovision came up with a song as bad as that this year, and it's our #1. Oh, the pride.
Hoping Yohanna's awesome song for Iceland charts well next week- #31 on iTunes right now, with the dire Norway winner at #3 and Jade at #16. And why the hell did we give Turkey 12 points?
But where are the actual charts? Yahoo, Radio 1, Charts Stats, Offical Chart Company all have last week's. And not for the first time in very recent memory.

Phil and Simon W - agreed about the out of date chart. Isn't there a cast iron source for up to date listings? Also how sloooow things move these days. 'Sex on Fire' has just left the 40 after 34 weeks on board. Makes me think - who's still buying it after all these weeks, and how many sales does a tune at No 40 have to amass??

6. D -
who on earth is buying the BEPs single? I have always been a great r&b/soul/urban music fan but this effort is mediocre. Checked all the sites- why is everyone so late in updating their chart? so much for the speed and alacrity of the digital super highway! Good to see Bill Withers have a belated hit with one of the all time classics tracks on the back of BGT- the biggest halo hit of the series so far. Surprised Jade Ewing didn't chart higher given the amount of tv/radio exposure. Why did UK give 12 points to that 'kiss kiss' rip off from Turkey- dreadful- and as for the winner - heard it 3 times now and detest it already AWFUL! but it looks like being the first massive hit for a eurovision winner for many years. All the fuss over Manics new album cover and resultant publicity will do no harm and should help its chart placing. Also surprised that dON Thomas Come On Train hasn't charted as a result of visa ad campaign. eminiem is not ageing well- looking dog rough!

I am from Turkey and I liked Jade Ewen's song. (except end of the song "tonight".. part) which written by Diane Warren.I like Diane's songs

Why England can't give 12 points to Turkey. Do you have to give 12 points to your neighbourhoods everytime ???

"Düm tek tek" have nothing to do with " kiss kiss" .. even this songs look smilar, didn't kiss kiss be number 1 in uk charts ?

In Turkey , nobody liked Hadise's clothes only, song is very different and rhytmic I think

I quite like the BEP's new song, its kinda dancey and thankfully it knocked off that awful 'Number 1'

Speaking of Eurovision, please dont buy that Norway song, its crap, why do people like it, its beyond me.

Again people are moaning about how slow the charts are, boring, boring, boring, don't listen to it if you don't like it, I don't, I just listen to the top 10 if I can be bothered or I look at the charts the next day.

9. Theo -
I dont mind the charts being slow but I do mind them not being available. It is now Monday afternoon and none of the usual sources have the new listing. Is it a bank holiday and no one has told us!

whilst ur downloading eurovision tracks...get waldo's people... why did it come last????
i downloaded the album yesterday... and i suggest... that you just download that track!!! hahahaha

Well, the top 10 might be rubbish, or at least not very inspiring, but at least it's 60% homegrown rubbish. I was starting to think that the UK were not producing music anymore.

12. James -
it seems we always have something about the charts to complain about. Whilst i am happy to read complaints and express my own, it makes me wonder if there is any blogger on here at all who is 100% happy with a chart that:

(a) is quite slow due to downloads
(b)lacks a decent number of new entries
(c)seems to not reflect much homeland music
(d) has too much of one genre in at once

I don't mind the odd rnB/hip-hop track, but i agree too much of it is annoying and does not reflect music variety, especially when most of it nowadays is utter tripe. And if they insist in just rapping over old songs, they could at least be more creative with their samples like Eminem usually is (Sing For The Moment is one of his highlights, imo, and it samples what i think is one of Aerosmith's most underrated tracks). What the heck has Flo Rida done to the Eiffel 65 original? it was one of my favourite pop tracks when i was younger, and his sampling is appauling...the lyrics are even worse

Anyways, still unsure about the new BEP single, but agrred with CJ, much better than our last #1, and also much better than the tripe which is expected to be #1 next sunday. Namely "Bonkers" by Dizzee Rascal...

13. James -
Personally, I blame Radio 1 for the ridiculous amount of Rap that is in the charts atm...so much for promoting music variety...

14. Yahoo! Music User -
So what was the last foreign Eurovision winner to get to number one? My memory suggests it was Nicole's 'A Little Peace', which must have been 1982. Am I forgetting anything?

I must admit that the charm of that Norwegian Eurovision winner eludes me. I quite liked the Ukrainian song, a bizarre track that sounded like up to four songs welded together; maybe it was too strange for most tastes.

15. Chris -
The last time Bill Withers appeared in the charts was back in 2004 when his song 'Lovely Day' was sampled on Twista's no.3 hit 'Sunshine,' although he wasn't given a ft. credit.

16. grumpyoldgit.com -
Personally speaking one rap song in the chart is one too many. I hate the genre with a passion and I hope that “Fairytale” beats “Bonkers” to the top even though I was far from impressed with that song as well. I once entered a song for Europe myself to represent the UK but it never got anywhere. I still reckon it beats a lot of the rubbish I hear each year in the competition though.

Seasider - A track typically has to sell in the region of 5,500 'copies' in a week to get a top 40 place in the singles chart.

Rewind 3 years and that figure would stand at less than 3,000, which is not enough to guarantee a top 75 place in today's chart.

It must be the first time in about 6 months or more that there are no Kings Of Leon tracks in the top 40!

18. minardifan -
Quite funny to see U2 not make it into the Top 40 from last weeks number 42 chart pacing with their new single, in fact plummeting out of the Top 75 altogether! Does this become their least successful single ever?

19. Yahoo! Music User -
The UK Top 40 has become utterly ridiculous and totally unrealistic, the chart by and large is full of childish rubbish, and established so called "veteran" acts like Depeche Mode, U2, REM, Bryan Adams have all had major chart failures in the last year, not because the songs were bad , but because the people buying are silly immature teenagers who would listen to any rubbish. If you listen to Rap or R'n'B influenced music like Run DMC, N.W.A, Ice-T, Public Enemy, well at least it had some talent, it was making a statement, now acts like Soulja Boy Tellem and Flo Rida are just utter drivel, ripping off someones song and filling it unbearably bad. Average Lazy music for the Average Lazy Generation....and record shops share a big part of the blame for phasing out the Physical product to meet the needs of The Lazy Generation, who cant be bothered to walk to town to buy the track they like. Magnificent is the best track U2 in many years yet it reached #42, Selfish Jean by Travis 2 years ago was one of their best ever releases, yet it limped to #30,from (The Boy With No Name ) album. Even the lates Kings Of Leon tracked scraped the lower reaches of The 40! My interest in the Top 40(soon to be called The Lazy Average Persons Singles Chart) is fading very fast!

20. Robin T -
Stephen Glancy, if you look at the charts throughout history then you will see that the biggest chart hits have ALWAYS been bought by "silly immature teenagers" who like what they are told to like.

The same people who are downloading N-Dubz and Flo Rida and Black Eyed Peas would have bought dance music if they had been born a ten years earlier and pop music if born 20 years earlier.

Who was buying Bros records in the 1980's or David Cassidy records in the 1970's? Certainly no-one over the age of 20.

Even The Beatles were marketed towards teenage girls - their first tour was supporting Helen Shapiro, the youngest female to have a solo number one.

Radio 1 certainly could do better, as they seem to leave it to the specialist DJs to break any indie/rock/metal group. But they are still far better than the commercial stations who just play what is already in the charts and never anything new.
