Week Ending June 13th 2009

Posted Mon 8 Jun 2009 10:51AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Of all the chart feats and single movements of note, the most unusual of all is possibly the record that retakes the Number One position after being deposed by another. Such events can be few and far between - I was 20 years old before it happened at all in my lifetime and indeed before today just four other singles this decade had managed the feat. To their number we now have to add 'Boom Boom Pow' by the Black Eyed Peas which first hit the top three weeks ago only to be shunted rudely down to second place by Dizzee Rascal and Armand Van Helden with 'Bonkers'. Over the last couple of weeks the single has more than held its own and is now rewarded for that consistency as sales of 'Bonkers' slip enough to ensure that the American trio can reclaim the Number One position. Thus 'Boom Boom Pow' becomes the first single to have two distinct runs at Number One since 'Hips Don't Lie' by Shakira back in the summer of 2006.

The highest new entry storms into the singles chart at Number 3 as Kasabian get the promotion for new album 'West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum' which hits the shops this week. 'Fire' is the track chosen to kick things off and it seems to have been an inspired choice. It is a wonderfully subtle single that takes a good few listens to properly appreciate it, the choruses sounding for all the world like a laid back bluegrasss ballad before the chorus explodes with their trademark anthemic style. It is the group's fourth Top 10 hit in this country and far and away the biggest. 'Cutt Off' peaked at Number 8 in January 2005 whilst they have also had singles peak at 9 and 10 thanks to 'Empire' and 'LSF' respectively.

Also new to the Top 10 is Keri Hilson who rises to Number 6 with 'Knock You Down'. As we previously noted, this single was released in almost embarrassing haste after her first release 'Return The Favor' could only peak at Number 19 earlier last month. 'Knock You Down' is Keri Hilson's first taste of Top 10 success since 2007 when she supplied vocals on Timbaland's 'The Way I Are' which hit Number One. For her co-stars on this single it is quite a different matter naturally. Kanye West makes his second Top 10 apperance of 2009 following his own 'Heartless' at the start of the year whilst Ne-Yo grabs his biggest chart single since 'Miss Independent' also peaked at Number 6 at the tail end of last year.

On the climb inside the Top 20 are Empire Of The Sun who now rise to Number 14 with 'We Are The People'. The Australian electronic duo have taken their time establishing a foothold in this country despite many tips at the start of the year that they were one of the names to watch in 2009. Debut single 'Walking On A Dream' could only limp to Number 64 back in March whilst even this single started slowly out of the gate and is only now picking up steam. Now that the track has momentum behind it, a Top 10 placing within the next couple of weeks seems on the cards, and even the aforementioned 'Walking On A Dream' has come alive again in a mini halo effect, the single now at Number 72 after reappearing at Number 74 a week ago. With Daniel Merriweather and The Veronicas also selling strongly this week, it means three of this weeks Top 20 acts are Australian.

New at Number 21 are... the Pet Shop Boys who grab their second hit of the year with 'Did You See Me Coming'. Needless to say its chart placing largely fits the pattern of it being the second single from the album, drifting from a strong start earlier in the week to a rather indifferent mid-table placing and at the risk of stating the obvious it is unlikely to do anything to stimulate sales of the album. In actual fact this is something of a huge shame as 'Did You See Me Coming' is far and away the best track on the album and indeed one of the best songs Tennant and Lowe have created for years, and acoustic guitar intro giving way to a bubbly, bouncy pop record with a singalong chorus and naturally a cheeky wink towards the almost certainly intentional innuendo of the title. In the hands of anyone else this would have wound up a massive hit but as a Pet Shop Boys release it is little more than an also ran. What on earth possessed them to give the rather weak 'The Loving Kind' to Girls Aloud instead of this one?

There is an all-too rare chart entry at Number 28 for Enter Shikari who get what is only their second ever Top 40 single with 'Juggernauts'. The single arrives ahead of the release of their second album 'Common Dreads' which is released next week and for sheer enthusiasm you will find little to top it this week. 'Juggernauts' sounds for all the world like five tracks jammed together into one, Rou Reynolds demonstrating his full vocal range as the song veers wildly from alt-rock anthem to thrash metal screamer right the way down to a laid back Streets-esque poetry recital with the middle portion of the song given over to an impassioned monologue set to a low key synth backing. The track possibly loses something after the first time you hear it, during which time you are on the edge of your seat wondering just where it is going to go next, but records that grab you by the balls in this manner are few and far between and I'd personally love this to be more than just a one week wonder.

Next at Number 31 is 'Show Me What I'm Looking For' by Carolina Liar who are based in Los Angeles but who are almost all Swedes, with the exception of lead singer Chad Wolf. This Scandinavian connection means they can boast a debut album helmed by production legend Max Martin although if you didn't know better you would swear their debut chart hit was a Killers track, Wolf sounding so much like Brandon Flowers it is almost scary.

The final Top 40 new entry of the week goes to Kelly Clarkson who edges up to Number 36 with 'I Do Not Hook Up' which has spent the past month sculling around just outside the upper reaches. It is the follow-up to Number One smash 'My Life Would Suck Without You' which is still floating around the lower end of the Top 75 despite making what is in this day and age a rather rapid exit from the top end of the chart after its week of glory at the summit. The slow progress of this second single probably befits is status as a slightly lesser record, although her powerful vocals are as ever present as usual.

Turning to the album chart, and an unexpected two-way battle developed at the top during the course of the week, one that was eventually won by Paolo Nutini who grabs his first chart-topping album with 'Sunny Side Up'. This in spite of the rather lacklustre performance of its lead single 'Candy' which made Number 19 two weeks ago and then swiftly plummeted. In one of those astonishing facts you never considered significant until it actually happens, Nutini is the first ever Scottish male soloist to top the UK album chart. The runner up is Daniel Merriweather whose popularity I think caught one or two retailers on the hop and so who grabs a Number 2 album with his solo debut 'Love & War'. This comes against the backdrop of his current single 'Red' which still continues to sell steadily and spends a third straight week at Number 5.

Finally we do have a new Number One on another chart of note - the best sellers of the year so far. Lady Gaga has the strange honour of toppling herself as 'Poker Face' this week overtakes the sales of 'Just Dance' to claim the title of biggest selling single of 2009 thus far. Both singles have sold over 650,000 copies each which means Lady G has sold over 1.3 million singles already this year. Third release 'Paparazzi' could well add to that tally - it just misses out on a Top 40 place this week, rising to Number 43.

Wow! Great new entries this week. The best Kasabian single so far, Empire of the sun and a fab new PSB single. Good news! Don´t miss the new Paparazzi Remix from Stuart Price.

I find that last piece of information about the no. of Gaga singles sold fascinating. Is there any way you could include more of this in your commentary? I'd love to know on a regular basis how many copies the top 3 had sold as well as get a running total on those tracks that refuse to leave the top 75.

Thanks as always for the great information. Chart stats geeks everywhere salute you.

3. Lloyd -
I thought Rod Stewart would have had a few albums at number 1 wouldn't he?
Otherwise good as usual :)

4. Adam -
We will be seeing more of lady gaga soon im sure her new song will rise into the top 5 very soon:):) and wow she sold that much already thats amazing :)

On the subject of number ones which reclaimed the position having been disposed of during a single chart run, the feat used to be far more common in the 1950's. In fact Frankie Laine acheived it with 2 seperate songs namely "I believe" and "Answer Me". "I believe" actually bounced back twice giving Frankie 3-seperate runs at the top as part of his record 18 weeks in total unconsecutive weeks at number 1 with the song.

The record for returning to the top during a single chart run after having been removed stands at 7-weeks and is held by the Beatles with "She Loves You", during which time there were 2 different chart toppers, although FGTH very nearly blew this record out of the water with "Relax" but were prevented from doing so by their own song "Two Tribes".

Finally perhaps though the most celebrated song to return to the top was "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen although the 16-year gap between this happening tells you that this was not achieved during a single chart run. This acheivement however ensured that the song is the 3rd best selling UK single of all time, and the best selling non charity record.

Am surprised Agnes retreated slightly to number 4 after crashing in at number 3 last week. I thought she'd be challenging for the top.

Post 3, I would have thought Rod Stewart would have had some number 1 albums as well - and indeed he has. Though he was born in London, his dad was Scottish and his mum English - so I guess technically he is English, not Scottish.

7. M -
rod's had 5 uk no.1s, but is English by birth (and half parentage!)

8. Robin T -
Rod Stewart had seven number one albums, all in the 1970's. For anyone interested, they are Every Picture Tells A Story, Never A Dull Moment, Sing It Again Rod, Smiler, Atlantic Crossing, A Night on the Town and Greatest Hits.

Its a shame PSB didnt manage to keep their midweek sales at number 5 but as Radio 1 only play the same crap this is to be expected.

Im so glad BEP go back to number one, Mr Rascal as Jeremy Paxman likes to call him, is crap, he sounds exactly the same when he's talking and when he's 'talking' on his crap records.

Post 2: This is for you

I don't suppose Jason Mraz is close to breaking any records for number of weeks in the top 40 without making the top 10?!

11. Chris -
Walking on a Dream by Empire of the Sun was given away for free as a download from iTunes the week the physical was released, which is probably why it only peaked at 64.

Re: Post 5 Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody being the best selling non-charity record.

You may also be interested to know that it is the only song to have been No.1 in 4 different years due it being there over two separate Christmas/New Year periods in 1975/76 and 1991/92!

If I remember correctly when Bohemian Rhapsody was re-released after Freddie Mercury's death it was in aid of the Terence Higgins Trust, which disqualifies it as a non-charity single.
According to Wikipedia the charity received £1m from the single's sales.

I have to say your joke is pretty funny. Please don't start with the death threats now.

BEPs back to No1 zzzzzzzzz. Think Agnes will be around for a long time- a real summer hit. Lots of Killers tracks in the 100 following their appearance on Jonathan Ross. Why is Baz Luhrmann back at 91? The BGT effect still at work- Bill Withers back up to 40 and Patti Lupone up to 98. Talking of Inuenndo- Pet Shop Boys and Britney have had lots of coverage but I have not heard anyone mention Poker Face- which is totally filthy and if you listen to the verse I swear GaGa is NOT singing poker face on the last 2 lines of each verse. Not so long ago the puritans at the beeb would have banned these tracks! Think, J'Taime, Love to Love You Baby, Relax, There Ain't Nothing Like Shagging (which was about a US dance craze), Did You Ever? by Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood, Leap up and down wave your knickers in the air and of course a host of releases by Judge Dread- even Jasper Carrott's Magic Roundabout got banned by the beeb back in the good old days!

Yes, Gary Glitter would have gone straight in at number one.

You're watching your step this time around, Masterton, but your back-handed compliments are all too obvious. PSB have been having hits for a quarter of a century; even somebody as dim-witted as you must realise that to still be getting top thirty hits when they have no relevance to the majority of the singles-buying public is quite remarkable. And yet all you can say, is that a bunch of orange slappers should have recorded the song instead. U2's second single from their latest album didn't even make the top forty.

Anyway, good to see Empire of the Sun's excellent single still climbing.

Poker Face by Lady GaGa is quite explicit in its meaning.
It actually about her sleeping with a guy but thinking about a girl while he's making love to her... you know, she's bluffin with her muffin (vagina). He can't read her poker face.
This is on Ultimate Pop Party. Most kids won't understand it but some kids will; parents don't stand a chance interpreting today's hit songs. Flo Rida's quite rude too on his 'Right Round' track and also Lily Allen. I guess I'll just let the kids buy the Prodigy!!

all change next week as hit 40 uk will be known as a new chart so the top 10 will be people down loads there songs to make the top 10 while the top 10 is live on the radio from itunes so be warned the chart listenes I have always listened to RADIO 1 uk top 40 since 1990 when I was 11 as my nan used to buy me the top 10 dairy's until 2005 when that was the last one there did and also my nan died that october of 2005 so since then be writing it down in a paper book with lines from 40 to 11 then in a different book the top 10 and number 1 Album and number 1 VIDEO AND DVD AND NOW JUST DVD NUMBER 1

19. Z -
Really nice to see Empire of the Sun with an 80s-style ascent of the chart (37 26 14). In those days, they'd have had their first TOTP appearance (either last week or this) and be on course for the Top 10. I hope they don't stall - they almost made the Top 10 on iTunes last week, then slipped back again. They've also just released the video to Standing on the Shore, a possible future UK single? Bet they end up with a bunch of tracks hanging round the Top 75 like MGMT in recent months. Pity the PSBs didn't quite make the Top 20 - perhaps if they'd released this one first, before the album, it might have been Top 10. Saying that, Love Etc. was a newer sound for them. To me, Did You See Me Coming? is a classic PSB dance track à la I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing, Red Letter Day, and Don't Know What I Want But I Can't Get It Any More... hmmm, lots of long titles.

Strange sales this week, PSB won't be in the 40 next week, it started well on the Tunes, but by Friday gone! The Veronicas sales collapsed on Play, com and Agnes lost top on Tunes so that's why she has downed.
For those interested Bill Withers record was first released in the UK in August 1973 on the A&M label.
My tip for the top next week might be Pixie Lott!
