Week Ending June 27th 2009

Posted Mon 22 Jun 2009 9:15AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

For those continually bemoaning that even in this age of upward mobility you still need to enter at the very top to make Number One on the singles chart, there is some welcome news this week as a record instead makes an impressive six place climb to the top. Naturally things are never that quite straightforward, for the record in question is 'When Love Takes Over' by David Guetta and Kelly Rowland which only charted at Number 7 last week thanks to a midweek rush release to counter the effect of a spoiler cover version. With all formats of the single now available its presence at the top comes as little surprise but it is still a moment to savour nonetheless. This track is without a shadow of a doubt one of the anthems of the summer, one of the tracks by which the holiday of 2009 will be defined - and naturally it is a tremendous uplifting pop record to boot. It is the first ever Number One single for David Guetta and with this track he becomes the first Frenchman to top the UK charts since Romain Tranchart and Yann Destagnol of Modjo in September 2000. For Kelly Rowland it is her second extra-Destiny's Child Number One single and arrives almost seven years after her first, 'Dilemma' on which she duetted alongside Nelly.

The only new arrivals inside the singles Top 10 are both singles motoring up from the lower reaches. Leading the charge is 'Paparazzi' by Lady Gaga which moves 13-8, its surge in support coming not as I erroneously suggested last week thanks to its physical availability (which is due in a couple of weeks) but for the rather more straightforward reason that its video finally went into widespread circulation and thus ensuring it gained TV airplay. The single is naturally now her third Top 10 single in a row.

One place behind at Number 9 is 'Said It All' from Take That which surges up the singles chart from its rather lowly Number 48 placing last week. The epic ballad is the third single lifted from their album 'The Circus' and niftily beats out the Number 14 peak of their last single 'Up All Night'. The single is their 18th Top 10 hit, a statistic which naturally kind of pales into insignificance next to their 11 Number One hits. Whilst writing this on Sunday night I was entertained to note that the Wikipedia entry for the song contained the wonderfully optimistic line: "there is speculation that it will make number-one in the UK Singles Chart". Needless to say there is no source or attribution for this, so let's give them some speculation that can be referenced back: it won't.

It is clubland that provides us with the highest new entry on the singles chart, with 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' smashing in to Number 15 for the Freemasons and their special guest star Sophie Ellis Bextor. Fans of the singer will be instantly familiar with the track as it premiered online well over a year ago as an example of some of the work in progress of her as yet untitled fourth album. With said long player still yet to surface, 'Heartbreak...' has instead emerged commercially with full credit given to the production wizards who have helped to create it. Make no mistake though this is every inch a starring vehicle for the pouting singer herself, an intoxicating mid-tempo Eurodisco track which knocks just about everything she has put her name to in the last few years to the ground. The single is Sophie Ellis-Bextor's first chart hit since 2007 and her biggest hit single since 'Catch You' was a Top 10 hit in February that year. The Freemasons have only once had a Top 10 hit as a credited act, 'Uninvited' hitting Number 8 in October 2007. Make no mistake, this single is set to join those ranks in seven days time.

Yet another hot new female act takes a bow this week, Paloma Faith arriving at an impressive Number 17 with debut single 'Stone Cold Sober'. The singer and actress is another Winehouse-alike with a yowling jazz voice which wraps itself around this brass-soaked single in a far from unpleasant manner. It isn't the most conventional pop record you will hear all summer but is no less brilliant for all that, so have another gratuitous video embed so you can appreciate it properly.

Lower down the bottom end of the Top 40 there is a new entry for Jack Penate with 'Be The One', his second single of the year landing at Number 35 following April hit 'Tonight's Today'. This new track suffers the same fate as the first, sounding scrappy and thrown together compared to the joyous slices of music that heralded his 2007 debut. Meanwhile just one place below at Number 36 is '15 Minutes', the debut chart single from next big thing act The Yeah You's. The duo comprise guitarist Nick Ingram and keyboard player Mike Kintish and both combine their voices in an intoxicating harmony which in truth isn't a million miles away from that of Gary Barlow and the rest of Take That. For an act which had gathered its fair share of praise in the credible press, they are almost startlingly commercial with '15 Minutes' more than holding its own as one of the best pop singles you have heard all week in a chart which is fairly stuffed full of them. I'm hoping this chart placing isn't reflective of a here today and gone tomorrow chart run. '15 Minutes' deserves to be Top 20 with some amount of urgency.

There is no change at the top of the album chart with Kasabian sitting pretty for a second week. Instead the biggest surprise is the Number 4 arrival of 'Let It Roll', a retrospective hits collection of the entire solo career of the late George Harrison. The album features all of his solo hits as well as some live recordings from the celebrated charity Concert For Bangladesh which he staged in 1971. The collection is his highest charting album since 'Living In The Material World' made Number 3 when first released in 1973. Even his 1987 "comeback" album 'Cloud Nine' (and source to 'Let It Roll's' lead track 'Got My Mind Set On You') only reached Number 10.

Finally it would be wrong to let this week pass without a brief acknowledgement of the widely reported news story that another possible change to the way record charts are compiled is on the way, with the Official Charts Company only too aware of the growing popularity of online streaming services such as Spotify and We7 and the need to somehow take online listens rather than actual purchases in order to assess the relative popularity of pieces of music. In typical sensationalist fashion the BBC headline "Top 40 faces new digital shakeup" suggests that this integration is almost a fait accompli and will be happening now, quotes later in the piece from OCC director Martin Talbot pointing out that the actual inclusion of streaming figures might be as long as five years away, the presence of the services in the market simply being something they are aware of and working towards tracking officially. Nonetheless if streaming data does ever come onstream it will be possibly the most dramatic sea change in the British charts ever. For a long time in the 80s and early 90s there were calls from some quarters for airplay data to be used as part of the chart compilation process as it is in America, the industry instead electing to retain the principle that the chart tracked actual permanent purchases and nothing else. The possibility does exist now though that physical (or even digital) ownership of music is going to become less and less necessary with a vast cloud of music able to follow you everywhere to be heard on demand. It is that kind of future that the whole industry will have to embrace. In the meantime the digital sales of tracks just keep on rising... Music purchasing to own isn't going to go away just yet.

Shocked by the news of Michael Jackson's death.

It's late but I can't get to sleep so thought I'd post here. I expect there'll be loads of re-entries in Sunday's chart. It would be good to see the likes of Ben & She's Out Of My Life back in there as well as the usual suspects. Hopefully, Man In The Mirror will finally make the UK Top 20 and Thriller could reach a new chart peak, bettering its No.10 placing in '83. There could also be a couple of classic album tracks in there too; Human Nature, Lady In My Life.

Although I'm glued to the TV right now, I do wish that BBC News would stop showing the clip of him dangling that baby over the hotel balcony. I still think he's going to drop it!

With Jacko's death being announced, what's the betting he'll set a new chart record on Sunday when EVERY single that he has ever released re-enters the top 100, and I wouldn't be surprised if nine of the top ten are his records.

I think the Glastonbury festival this weekend will be all in tribute of the king of pop prompting even more downloads of his work to happen.

We hold our breaths to see what Sundays chart produces and wheather those two berks (Fearne and Reggie) will spend more time yapping about him than playing his releases.

43. Rich -
Like most people, I am truly shocked to hear about the sudden death of Michael Jackson. I was worried that performing 50 dates at the O2 would be too hard for him. His achievements in pop will never be bettered. His mom will pray that Jehovah God will resurrect him in the new system while his brother Jermaine prays to Allah as a Muslim. May God grant us all peace during this shocking time in pop music.

I did actually hear a rumour that he was dying a while ago it's still a big shock though don't u like the new PCD song Iainholmes I think it's good

So sad and totally unexpected death of MJ.

"I wouldn't be surprised if nine of the top ten are his records".

Whilst i agree ssome of his old tracks will be in the top 100 by sunday, it's nearly the end of the chart week isn't it? Surely it will prove unlikely that 9 michael jackson tracks will become some of the UK's best selling singles within 2 days...Did you mean NEXT sunday? I doubt even one track will be Top 10 on sunday. Hey, i may be wrong and taken fully by surprise this sunday :)

If that were to be the case with loads of Top 40 MJ entries, I imagine most of the buyers will be the younger generation? especially considering millions of long term fans worldwide are likely to own a copy of the "Thriller" album anyway...it's supposed to be the best selling album of all time isn't it?

Im sure some Jackson 5 tracks could also make an appearance?

As for Fearne and Reggie, i bet even Michael Jackson's death won't be enough to convince them to grow up and produce a mature, decent chart show...Reggie might give the old "believe it or not" or "its available to download now" speeches as they announce each MJ track...

WELL tracking i-tunes today gas been incredible- from 0 -25 singles in the top 100 and 0- 12 albums in the top 30 i-tunes - with the top 7 all Jacko. Never seen anything like this since Elvis- not even Lennon or Freddie achieved this posthumously. Jackson was a unique talent- an innovator - cross over appeal for black artists- his contribution to pop and dance music- the developemtn of the promotional video- the awesome Motown 25 performance-his influence is clearly present today in the likes of Usher, JustinTimberlake etc etc.
I had a part time job in a local record shop when Elvis died in 77- it obviously took a few weeks for the record industry to gear up production of his back catalogue- what is happening on-line today is another first for Jackson. So glad the majority of reporting today focusses on his musical legacy. Saw him in '92 at Glasgow Green- awesome!

darrinreba- Yes, I am a Jehovah's Witness, so I feel extremely sad. It is like losing my big brother. It hurt when Michael left us back in 1987 and it seemed that his life went downhill ever since then. Whatever religion people belong to, death is always painful. I pray that his parents (Joe and Katherine) are coping with this extraordinary loss.

49. Iain -
Like everyone, I am shocked to hear of Michael Jackson's passing.

It won't be this Sunday that we will see a big impact in the top 40 - Sunday week will probably provide this moment. Yes, there are 35 of his tracks currently in i-tunes top 100 but most of these are in the lower reaches at the moment. You have to remember that other tracks have been selling steadily Sunday-Thursday as normal. I might be proved wrong, but I feel that people are being a bit premature in their predictions for an MJ dominance in Sunday's top 40. I would say maybe one track in the top 10 at very best. Next week, different story.

I hate Pussycat Dolls new single! Nobody should cover 'I Will Survive' and expect to gain any credibility. It's so obviously aimed at teenagers who may not be aware of the original.

50. D -
i agree ianholmes- i will survive should be left well alone. dian aross has already butchered it back in the 90s and for some strange reason continues to perform it in her live shows at the expense of other classic hits. Thing ur gonna be proved wrong regarding michael jackson. I have been watching the jacko tsunami sweep up the i-tunes chart man in the mirror leading the charge. we are into the unknown - 1st major superstar to pass away in the digital download age - with the saturation coverage on tv and radio things might just reach a peak in time for sundays chart

51. D -
39 jacko tracks in the i-tunes 100 with man in the mirror at 4.

52. grumpyoldgit.com -
Well that's the number one sorted out for the foreseeable future. Is there any point in any other artist releasing a single for the next 10-weeks at least - I doubt it. MJ might even exceed the feat in an artist/act removing themselves from the top of the chart. This has happened on 9 separate occasions to date but has only ever involved 2 consecutive songs by the same artist. Can MJ make it 3 or more and create the new record?? On a personal level although I was never a great fan, I am still sorry to see him go, and as he was only a few weeks younger than me, he is from my generation. I find it quite bizarre that they kept on trying to resuscitate him for more than an hour though. Quite what they were trying to achieve I don't know, as it is normally pointless to continue after a few minutes have past due to the brain damage caused by oxygen starvation. As for the cause of the heart attack (if that is what officially happened) then the medication, stress, and intermittent general anaesthetic for his many stints at facial cosmetic surgery probably took their toll. After all, the rest of the family (including both parents) appear to be still going strong.

53. James -
deeply saddened by Michael Jackson's death, but probably not as surprised/shocked as everyone else here. As the BBC website said, he had a history of health problems so maybe it was inevitable he would die at quite a young age.

Needless to say, he was still a very talented artist, and i loved his dancing. Awsome! I don't believe any of the horrible things the media said about him, and they should be ashamed for placing his persona in such a negative spotlight for the last few years of his life. Maybe stress from the media contributed to his death...

To me, he was one of the nicest, loving and caring celebrities who, to me, was way too innocent to abuse children. He supported nearly 40 charities, something pigs like Simon "Foul" would never do...

R.I.P. MJ. You were an inspiration to everyone, from the old to the youth, and there will never be another artist comparable to you.

Now i need to get an itunes card. I want to buy some of his back catalogue :)

54. Przemek -
oh man, Michael is huge. on US i-tunes 7 of out top 10 hits are michael's right now.( at 12:01 GMT) and 43 of this hits in top 100 (including We Are The World). Impressive, he has been a real superstar!!!

55. Yahoo! Music User -
Not sure if Jacko's songs are eligible for the US Hot 100. Isnt there a rule which stipulates that songs have to be "actively promoted" by their record companies in order to qualify for the chart? And as far as I know, none of his back catalogue songs are being "actively promoted" right now.
As fas as the UK is concerned, I think most of the download sales for his songs will happen over the period Friday to Monday, so probably sales will be split between the two weeks, so that Jacko won't make the widely expected inpact, neither this week nor next. If sales had happened over the period Monday - Thursday, things would have been completely different of course.

56. Iain -
Well I'm betting a lot of people will be listening to the charts with interest later on today.

I'm going to make a cautious prediction (probably end up being totally wrong!!) 'Man in the Mirror' top 20. Maybe 2 or 3 others somewhere in the top 40.

57. Derek -
According to the Guardian his Greatest Hits album "No 1s" will be just that on the album chart today - I thought it was called "History" but maybe he released two greatest hits albums?

58. Yahoo! Music User -
Hey guys woz just on chart stats.com lookin up Michael Jackson's chart history . . And I see that back in 2006 a number of his songs charted again!!! Ne1 like 2 fill me in why??? It was over a few wks 2???

59. grumpyoldgit.com -
Post 58 - they released his entire back catalogue as they had done with Elvis Presley the year previously. I guess it was just another way of milking more money out of the fan base.

If John Lennon's death was anything to go by, we should now see a load of closet fans crawl out of the woodwork as well as people who suddenly claim to be Jacko's biggest fan yet have paid no previous interest in him appear over night,

60. D -
46 jacko tracks placed on i-tunes 100- wonder how many will show up on the chart
