Week Ending July 4th 2009 - Part Two (The Rest)

Posted Sun 28 Jun 2009 10:15PM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

So what of the non-Jackson bits of the chart? This is the place to learn all.

When the news broke late on Thursday night, some friends were quick to make the pithy but still prescient comment "Poor La Roux". Although the worst fears that they would be eclipsed totally by the Jackson bandwagon were not realised, it is still a rather regrettable fact that their sensational debut at Number One with their second single 'Bulletproof' will be all but overlooked by all but the dedicated few.

Ben and Elly can already boast one of the biggest selling singles of the year so far, with 'In For The Kill' having sold close on half a million copies already. Still selling strongly (it is locked at Number 16 this week), the track is the year's third biggest seller to date, despite never having made Number One. It is a stat that 'Bulletproof' corrects with some style. The track itself sounds for all the world like a four minute tribute to the entire career of Vince Clarke. At the risk of presenting an incredibly tortured metaphor, it is like Erasure performing a Yazoo single with a chorus lifted straight from the early works of Depeche Mode. Perhaps more so than any other single so far this year, 'Bulletproof' wears its 80s influences proudly on its sleeve in what is not so much a celebration of the sounds of the decade as an out and out homage to it.

As an interesting aside, 'Bulletproof' is the 1099th Number One single in chart history which naturally means whichever track supplants it at the top will go down in history as yet another centennial chart-topper. Naturally the possibility exists that 'Man In The Mirror' will make the leap, assuming its sales hold up during the course of the week (which is for sure by no means a given). At the time of writing it has finally overhauled 'Bulletproof' at the top of the iTunes live chart, something it had previously been unable to do. Watching the battle develop over the next seven days should be quite fascinating.

It is the world of the electrogirls which gives us the highest "new" entry of the week as Florence & The Machine fly to Number 12 with 'Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)'. It is the first Top 40 hit for Florence Welch and her collaborators and only their second chart hit of any kind. Debut release 'Kiss With A Fist' made Number 51 just over a year ago whilst follow-up singles 'Dog Days Are Over' and 'You've Got The Love' both missed the Top 75. All four tracks are taken from their debut album 'Lungs' which hits the stores next month. If you are tired of 80s synth throwbacks then you could do far worse than to check this single out, an enigmatic and ethereal track which climaxes in an anthemic chorus which makes everything seem worthwhile. Yes, there are 80s influences in there, but they are Siouxsie and the Banshees and Kate Bush which is nothing less than a joy.

The rest of the Top 20 is characterised by the usual frustrating lineup of hot new singles which find themselves crashing against the glass ceiling of the Top 10. They can't even blame Jackson sales for this lack of progress. The Freemasons' 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' stalls at Number 13, Jordin Sparks' 'Battlefield' slips back three to Number 14 whilst even more surprisingly 'Hush Hush ; Hush Hush' from the Pussycat Dolls holds firm at Number 18. The double-barrelled title is designed to flag up that this is actually two songs in one. The original 'Hush Hush' was a ballad and was one of the tracks on their 'Doll Domination' album. The new version is taken from a special edition which is being released as "version 2.0" of the album in some territories but in a sensible move is being pushed here as a six track mini-album featuring the reworked tracks from the new version. The single rendition of 'Hush Hush' was the arrangement the girls performed on tour, leaving the first verse of the single intact before it takes off in a totally different direction in a house remix that ultimately climaxes in a rendition of 'I Will Survive' just for the hell of it. I'm a huge fan of records that change tone or tempo or shoot off at right angles and to me this has the same kind of fun vibe as disco classic 'No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)'. I hope this isn't the end of this story.

Also new at Number 21 are Basement Jaxx who make a chart return after a long absence with 'Raindrops'. Messrs Buxton and Ratcliffe have been silent since the release of 2006 album 'Crazy Itch Radio' but now return with this bhangra flavoured track which duly settles in to become their biggest chart single since 'Oh My Gosh' made Number 8 in early 2005. New album 'Scars' is currently pencilled in for a September release.

Finally there is also a Top 40 new entry for 'Never Forget You' from the Noisettes which moves 48-31. The follow-up to smash hit 'Don't Upset The Rhythm, the differences between the two tracks could not be more marked. The new track is a rock/reggae fusion complete with pizzicato strings and a girly vocal from Shingai which all combine to make this one of the summeriest, brightest most nostalgic singles you will hear all week.

There is a genuine fear that a whole string of worthwhile hits are about to be roughly shouldered out of the way by the continuing Jackson bandwagon. As I mentioned earlier, the tribute sales of his records have continued unabated over the weekend and you can bet your life that there are plenty of acts and their labels who are about to find their carefully laid release schedules and promotional plans swept away in a tide of mourning. The only relief is that radio stations got bored of back to back Jacko records by Friday afternoon and reinstated their usual playlists. Normality is still just around the corner, it just depends how many more steps we have to take to get there.

love the noisettes track- has a real 60s feel to it- also good to see basement jaxx back

It's sad that MJ is getting the boost he always needed by the media now after its too late.

It's good that the tunes are getting another chance to shine - wonder if any of the recent ones will get a look in. A feature of my Uni days was seeing all 4 covers of indestructible sitting in the sale bins afte the first week of fan base sales.

I do like that you make an 80s reference to something other than synth pop music. Kate Bush influenced (Bat For Lashes), and Joy Division Influenced (Editors) are just as valid. That said Vince Clarke is frankly one of the most important British musicians ever though.

I hope that La Roux's 'Bulletproof' doesn't get overlooked. I haven't seen the sales figures yet, but by all accounts it was selling very strongly and first week sales are probably impressive.

Great to see Jordin Sparks slip, and Pussycat Dolls stick. I hate these tracks. Loving Florence and the Machine though.

Further down the top 40 some tracks have been shouldered out by the Jackson hits . Premature exit for Lenka - 'The Show' climbed last week, but falls dramatically. A.R. Rahman and PCD falls sharply despite being in the top 10 sellers list of the year so far. Bucking this trend though - Jason Mraz! Still manages to climb again!

4. Armand Rahim -
A talented individual whose life was with both amazingly admirable for all the music achievements and also disgusting habits of sleeping in bed with children not of his own.

If we can comment on his musical accomplishments openly , then perhaps we too can have a say about his troubling behaviour of acting childlike and of the molestation accusations.

A fan I am, esp the track 'Earth Song' which happens to be the most meaningful song ever written, standing high with the likes of 'Imagine' by John Lennon & 'What a wonderful world' by Loius Amstrong.

But I also can't help to want to put him in the same category of those serial child molesters and worst, the one that got away.

Rest in peace MJ. Here's hoping your legacy will be remembered for both your deeds!

Let's get over it shall we. Lennon famously said that Elvis died when he went in the army. Michael Jackson has been artistically bankrupt since at least 1987. Bad is shockingly so and everything after was pap.

Thriller is a genuine highpoint in popular music that arrived standing on the shoulders of the giant that was Off The Wall.

His performances with The Jackson 5 on ABC and I Want You Back will never be surpassed by any boyband or other purveyor of bubblegum pop. They are aural expressions of joy and genius.

Anyone who witters on about [profane]e from Dangerous or Earth Song or any of that common or garden, R Kelly, New Jack Pedo-nonsense doesn't know the first thing about music.

MJ was a kook. He made great music once, fell victim to his father and the press and ceased to be relevant as a musician about the time that he got Martin Scorsese to direct him in a video with Wesley Snipes.

Boo hoo. Next.

Of course, there is a Jackson at number one in the singles, just not that one...

La Roux is one of the most surprising success stories of the year. Their approach has been the opposite of the sheer calculation of Lady GaGa, as promotion of the singles has been pretty low key. And the records sound odd, taking a very dated 80s sound and somehow making it sound fresh. The results are unexpectedly moving for reasons I can't quite fathom. And, with the arrival of Florence & the Machine in the top 20, we've got more odd-sounding pop to enjoy.

interesting fact: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/a162575/jackson-death-sparks-historic-sales-rise.html

Good commentary James but your genres seem a bit off the mark this week. Basement Jaxx is 'bhangra flavoured'? The Noisettes are 'rock/reggae fusion'?? Maybe you've heard some remixes that I haven't, but to me the Jaxx is a house track and the Noisettes sound closer to Bacharach than Burning Spear.

9. Iain -
Well done to La Roux. 'Bulletproof' sold 80,000+ in its first week. Pity it wasn't released the previous week and it would've kept the awful 'When Love Takes Over' from no.1, which suffers a 20,000 dip in week on week sales.

Everyone is so caught up in MJ, no-one has mentioned the high turnover of number one hits recently. Has it been 5 different chart toppers in 5 weeks now? (Possibly another by Sunday). When was the last time that happened?

10. Damian -
Good to see a refreshingly different and unique number one - La Roux's Bulletproof is a very inidividual sounding number one, a great unashamedly proper pop song and along with Lady Gaga and Lily Allen the best number one of the year so far.

David Guetta, Pixie Lott ( a very poor song indeed..) and Black Eyed Peas have been poor number ones.

Quite likely Micheal Jacksons Man In the Mirror will reach number one this week, however, I don't believe he is going to monopolise the top 20as some think, most people will probably buy the No 1s album which has all his greatest hits on, and to be honest it works out much cheaper to do this and therefore more sense..

Great song at number 12 as well - Florence and the Machine, in fact the two highest new entries this week rank easily as being in my top 10 best songs of the year so far.

You know me I like to see if the retail charts tend to agree with one another.
For the last few weeks I have been checking out if the I-Tunes chart to see if it is very much different from say Wednesday and say Friday. With the exception of some big event TV show or MJ death. I would say on balance there's is little movement between midweek and Friday for tracks in the chart. The top 20 sees little change with most sticking or going up down one place. Outside the 20 the highest climber would be only up 10 places. It seems by midweek the Tunes chart has fixed most positions and without any interferance from promos etc stays that way. Untill Sunday - as we have seen with the Big Top 40 Show pushing the new records in early.
As for this week's chart, based on all the retail sites and even taking into account I-Tunes share, that David Guetta would easily be number one and La Roux at two. In fact I-Tunes were the only chart to have it at the top! Some sites didn't have it in the top five!!!

12. Si -
I'm dissapointed that as a long-term chronicler of chart activity, you bizarrely avoided any detailed trivia or comment about the quite frankly extraordinary number of returning Jackson tracks in the charts this week. I can understand you not wanting to ignore the other tracks out, but you've gone the other way and thrown the baby out with the bathwater. Not to have any stats at all on the most unusual chart quirk for many years is quite frankly odd!

13. James -
I think Florence + The Machine - Rabbit Heart is excellent she does sound a little like Kate Bush also abit like Bjork (which is good). Shame Empire Of The Sun - We Are The People is slipping down but good that Daniel Merriweather - Red is sticking in the top 10.

14. Colin -
si_hunt99 thats because MJ has a whole topic to himself, look below this one.

James 7j7j7 - I think we may have the same taste in music. You mention pretty much all the current music I like in your post!

I'm not going to mention anything about midweeks but it is by no means a given that Man in the Mirror will be no.1 this week.

17. Darrin -
I was suprised that none of his stuff was n e where 2b seen on the Australian charts instead it's left to The Black eyed peas to make history knocking themselves off with new single "I gotta feeling".

"Untouched" is certainly standing its ground keeping Jacko from scoring a well deserved top10 placing (this wk n e way). It's not the 1st time an Aussie song has kept him from reaching a prestigious point on the chart either back in 2001 Kylie kept his last top10 hit "you rock my world" from reaching no.1. It looks like his dominance of the chart is set to continue next wk check out www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/blog/thesound/

Iain didn't u guys just have 5 different no.1 songs in 5wk a few months ago? "The fear", "My life would suck without you", "Right round" (which strangely enough was no.1 on the same wk as the original which was no.1 on the wk I was born), "Islands in the stream" and "Poker face".

The Veronicas r huge Michael fans by the way one of their favourites is "they don't really care about us".

18. Colin -
I dont know has the Australian chart got rules against vintages tracks like the US Billboard chart has, they maybe selling well but are excluded.

19. Tina -
For goodness sake James, can't you police your site better than this? These sex adverts are getting out of hand and ruining the blogs. Sort it please b4 some of us go elsewhere.

20. Darrin -
Thorne175 Maybe but even his albums aren't in the chart. I think he is going to be in the US chart this week though. I read that he is set to make billboard history again!
