Chart Bite - Sunday October 18th 2009

Posted Sun 18 Oct 2009 7:42PM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Who said nice guys finish last? Well on the basis of the UK singles chart this week they are not far wrong, thanks to the presence of 'Bad Boys' at Number One. The single marks the start of the solo career proper of X Factor 2008 winner Alexandra Burke who releases her first music since she topped the charts with show-winning song 'Hallelujah' at Christmas time last year. As well as being her second Number One hit, it is also a second chart-topper of the year for guest rapper Flo Rida.

Runner up in the chart race is thus Robbie Williams who just happened to perform his single alongside Alexandra Burke on last week's X Factor results show. 'Bodies' marks his return to the chart for the first time in two and a half years and despite falling a long way short of the enormous sale for the Burke single, still ranks as his biggest chart hit since 'Tripping' also made Number 2 in October 2004.

Topping the pile on the album chart are The Editors who grab themselves their second straight Number One album with 'In This Light And On This Evening', the follow-up to 2007 release 'An End Has A Start'. This coincides with the chart appearance of its lead single 'Papillon' which charts at Number 23.

On the way... Chart Watch UK with the background story on all the weeks biggest hits, including the biggest ever chart smash for Michael Buble and a long overdue Top 40 entry for a song that has been all over the TV for most of the last month.

Not sure why everyone is stressing about Robbie Williams' single performance. He always sells a sh*t load of elpees.

BTW HAHA On Whitney's song falling down the chart, FAIL!

Whitney will go back up next week even after that terrible X factor performance! Cracking Freemason's mix though.

This is the first week of the year when Lady Gaga isn't in the top 40. Yes!

I think its really funny there was all the medie hype about Cheryl Cole not performing live on X Factor and she goes and sings live with a good dance routine (ok not with brilliant vocals), and Whitney performs and only just makes it through her performance and loses it in the middle where you realise she is just singing over the top of the backing track and cant even conduct a conversation after..............

Hmmm, last week we had Robbie all wide-eyed, hyper and such like and now we've had Whitney struggling with her song (even with the autocues present) and barely able to string two words together. Both have documented issues with, let's say, substances. Just a thought!

Cheryl did well considering. It was the wrong bottom two. Putting the twins to one side, Miss Frank and that young Patrick Swayze lookalike kid (forgotten his name) should've been there instead.

I also see that Coldplay's 'The Scientist' has benefitted from The X Factor, re-entering at 59. I suspect there will be more X factor connections entering next week's chart; a bit quiet this week don't you think?

Targetlad72 - Whitney Houston's fall on the singles chart is only a small one. In fact she the track actually increased sales week on week, despite the lesser chart position.
