Week Ending November 14th 2009
I don't know why I feel the need to keep apologising for it, but once again the influence of the all-conquering X Factor TV show is all over the UK singles chart this week. Westlife's failure to reach the top last week may have broken the pattern slightly, but for the third time in a row the fate of the Number One single is directly linked to a performance on the Sunday night results show.
Step forward then JLS who bring the two week reign of Cheryl Cole to a slightly premature end. The foursome have already had one chart-topper this year with 'Beat Again', but it is almost certainly thanks to their X Factor performance that the 2008 runners up make it two in a row with brand new single 'Everybody In Love'. Heralding the release of their debut album which hits the shops this week. Musically speaking 'Everybody In Love' is actually a far more appealing pop track than its predecessor and debuts at the top with another six figure weekly sale, the 120,000 copies the track sold last we beating even the 106,000 sale achieved by 'Beat Again' in its first week back in July.
We also should take time to note once more the remarkable number of acts who have topped the singles chart with two different tracks in 2009. The tally now stands at eight, with JLS having added themselves to a list which already included Lady Gaga, Flo Rida, Tinchy Stryder, Black Eyed Peas, Dizzee Rascal, Pixie Lott and David Guetta.
Not that Cheryl Cole has too much to complain about really this week. Another hefty sale for 'Fight For This Love' makes it the seventh single this year to sell over half a million copies and she still reigns supreme at Number One on the album chart with '3 Words'. Her closest challengers in this race were Bon Jovi with new album 'The Circle', the group just happening to appear on a certain reality TV show last weekend to plug their new release. It is the third Number 2 album in a row for the veteran rock band following 'Have A Nice Day' in 2005 and 'Lost Highway' in 2007. They haven't topped the album chart since 2000 release 'Crush'. On the singles chart they fare slightly less well, perhaps something of a surprise given that their new single was the track they performed (in an admittedly bowdlerised form) on the X Factor show last weekend. 'We Weren't Born To Follow' makes its chart debut at a rather lowly Number 25, an improvement at least on the Number 33 peak of their last hit '(You Want To) Make A Memory' in 2007 but a long way short of adding to their impressive tally of Top 10 hit singles. Maybe there is only a limited amount of X Factor magic to go around after all.
Back to the singles chart, and the second highest new entry of the week goes to a lady who may not have any connection to X Factor but has actually had a Number One single already this year without anyone noticing. Ke$ha made her chart debut back in March when she provided the female vocal on Flo Rida's Number One single 'Right Round'. Her appearance on that track (at the recommendation of producer Dr Luke) led to a full record deal and now a single of her own. 'Tik Tok' enters strongly at Number 6, her profile in this country helped by a support slot for Calvin Harris during the summer. 'Tik Tok' is one of those singles which will irritate as well as entertain in almost equal proportions. There is something maddeningly appealing about the half rapped and half sung track but its detractors will once again note that the fad for drowning American R&B tracks in Autotune shows no sign of abating.
The Top 10 also plays host to the third new entry of the week as 'End Credits' crashes in at Number 9 for London based producers Chase & Status. It is the culmination of a year of steadily growing popularity for the duo after their 2008 debut album 'More Than Alot' (sic) spawned two minor chart hits - the biggest, 'Against All Odds', peaking at Number 45 back in February. 'End Credits' is a brand new track and is featured heavily on the soundtrack of the new Michael Caine film 'Harry Brown' which opened in the UK this week. Even hardened dance music haters should give this track a whirl because 'End Credits' is the most remarkable club track you will hear all year, opening not with a beat but with the trademark acoustic guitar of singer Plan B, whose plaintive vocals soar for almost a minute before the track kicks in for real. One of those records that can't help but sound amazing over a cinema sound system, it is hardly surprising that this has shot straight to the Top 10 upon release. Chase & Status are set to increase their profile still further over the coming months with the new Rihanna album set to feature at least one track that they have helmed.
Also climbing into the Top 10 is Lady Gaga who moves 14-10 with 'Bad Romance'. Did I call her new special edition album something stupid last week? It is of course called 'The Fame Monster' and is set for release at the end of this month. In the meantime its lead single becomes her fourth Top 10 hit of the year and reverses the slight dip in fortunes she suffered when 'Lovegame' could only reach Number 19.
'Tis the season for Greatest Hits collections and possibly one of the more surprising smash hits is set to be 'Up To Now' from Snow Patrol which will feature work from the band's 15 year recording career and not just the five years that they have enjoyed mainstream success. As well as including now established classics such as 'Chasing Cars' and their own original version of 'Run', the album also hosts their brand new single 'Just Say Yes' which charts this week at Number 15. The song actually has a chequered history of its own, having originally been penned for Gwen Stefani who turned it down. Instead the track was recorded by Nicole Scherzinger and was intended for inclusion on her yet to be released solo album. Tired of waiting, Gary Lightbody retook ownership of the track and I don't think it is unfair to say we should all be glad that he did. It may not be quite the instant classic it aspires to be, but 'Just Say Yes' is another uplifting Snow Patrol anthem that will almost certainly find a way to strike a chord with you over the coming weeks. It is for the moment their seventh Top 20 hit single and their first to reach the Top 40 since 'Take Back The City' hit Number 6 back in October last year.
Also arriving in the Top 20 are 'Pencil Full Of Lead' from Paolo Nutini (28-17 and his second Top 20 hit of the year) and 'Flashback' from Calvin Harris (25-18 and the follow-up to Top 3 hit 'Ready For The Weekend'). They are joined however by a far more notable third arrival, a single which first charted way back in 1982, has never before been a Top 40 hit and yet is one of the most downloaded 20th century recordings on iTunes. The track in question is 'Don't Stop Believing' by Journey, originally taken from their 1981 album 'Escape'. Released as a single here in February 1982, the track peaked at Number 62, one of only two chart hits the band scored during their initial period of fame. It returned to popular attention in late 2007 thanks to its surreal use as the soundtrack to the closing scenes of TV drama The Sopranos, and ever since then has taken on a life of its own, dancing around the lower end of the sales charts. The track made the Top 75 for the first time since its first release back in April this year but until now had never once cracked the Top 50. This week 'Don't Stop Believing' jumps to Number 19 thanks - what else - to the X Factor performance of the song by Joe McEldry during last week's Rock themed show. It means that veteran rock band Journey finally have a UK Top 40 hit to call their own, their biggest chart single until now being 'Who's Crying Now' which peaked at Number 46 in 1982. Aside from 'Don't Stop Believing' their best known track is perhaps 'Open Arms' which was a Number 2 hit in America and the object of a cover version by Mariah Carey who took the song to Number 4 on these shores back in 1996.
You will note that not everything X Factor related automatically gets the rub. Try to go it alone outside the closeted family of the show and you might as well be dead to them. Just ask last years shock elimination Laura White. Always one of the most talented of the class of 2008. her early exit from the competition was one of the major talking points of the week when it happened and topically enough was a prime example of the judges often acting perversely and eliminating an act who genuinely didn't deserve it. Bouncing back from that setback, she now has a record of her own but it has gone unrecognised and unnoticed by the TV show that first catapulted her to fame. Without this guaranteed promotion the single has struggled for now, 'You Should Have Known' languishing at a rather sorry Number 32. It is a crying shame as the single passes the "is it any good" test with flying colours and it is not as if she hasn't worked hard to promote it in every other outlet available. I'll leave you with it here as this week of all weeks, I like the idea of doing something that makes Simon Cowell unhappy.

Bring back TOTP. It would have been fun to see Journey with "Don't stop believin", on the show this week. BBC should be producing a weekly show that covers the national chart as they are the public broadcaster and it is their duty.
think that Simon Cowell is a coward for not getting rid of John & Edward and thereby losing Lucie who is a great singer. On the positive side. X-Factor has helped sales of music to tremendous heights. Some of these biggest selling tracks are really quite average though e.g. Cheryl Cole, JLS etc.
As far as The X Factor is concerned, can we please stop kidding ourselves that this is a talent show? It is, and always has been, a popularity contest; just like Big Brother; just like Strictly Come Dancing; just like I'll Be A Celebrity When I Get Out Of Here.
The X Factor has nothing to do with music and everything to do with television. Most of the people who watch the show are not regular purchasers of music. Yes, some of them will download whatever their favourite little poppet sang on the show and even more of them will ultimately gobble up the rush-released cover version by the most popular contestant, which will dominate the Xmas chart as sure as night follows day. But, the performer of the Xmas No.1 is not the winner here! The winners are the production companies behind the show (Syco TV/Syco Music) and ITV, who benefit with much needed advertising revenue.
If the show returns for a 2010 series, I would like to propose some changes to the format. Based on the fact that they are appearing on a prime-time TV show, how about each performer receiving a scaling payment, dependent upon how long they remain in the contest. The person voted off in week one could receive say £10k, the least popular in week two could receive £20k, with payments going up incrementally each week by £10k until the final. The act who is voted 3rd could receive £100k, 2nd receives £250k and the most popular receives £500k and a golden handshake, until we bring on the interchangeable performing monkeys for the 2011 season. Sounds like a plan to me!
Some big new singles out this week. Leona, Britney, Pixie, Sugababes.
Another case in point as James has pointed out is the very poor position that Laura White has found herself in, shunned by the x factor she can only hit number 34, was expecting this to chart much higher and not sure why it hasn't, she is everything bit as appealing as Pixie Lott and the single is fairly decent.. perhaps there are just too many new female artists out there at the moment vying for attention the market has become saturated.
As for the new entries, quite like Kesha song, expect this to yo yo around the top 10 for a good few weeks it doesn't get its full release until the very end of the month. Chase and Status I'm not so keen on, watch this drop like a stone, also Snow Patrol track is very average fare, quite dull really and nowhere near as good as they can be - think Run.
Pleased to see Black Eyed Peas make the top 3, with there x factor performance on Sunday I can see there sales keeping hold this week and perhaps even increasing..
Really don't like Lady Gaga new track it is very annoying, unfortunately there is some life in this one yet, again it doesn't get its full release for 3 weeks.
As for next week, expect Leona Lewis to make number one- again the x factor influence will be there and then the following week we will have the x factor 12 finalists song, however, I think it will become more of a guessing game in the 2-3 weeks before the christmas number one week, I don't see many big hitters likely to ultimately make the number one, we will probably just see the x factor 12 finalists song reign until christmas number one week.
I think this will stop the female phone voters from influencing this show like they have done with all the other "reality" shows. Thus explaining why the girls get the chop quickly. You see it's not really that music buyers are not watching the show, as clearly they are when acts with singles out are selling 4 times what they would not being on the show. It's just music fans can't spend money on the acts on the show. I myself don't phone in to vote, as it would be money down the drian, but I might be tempted to buy a track.
Another point: (Syco TV/Syco Music) is Simon Cowell, so he's getting the money from the phone calls!
However this week Simon made himself the biggest fool and destroyed any cred (if he ever had any) making the X-Factor a joke of a talent show. As Danni said they all will just rap next week!
Enough X-F
Bon Jovi and Westlife true are casualties of the death of the hard single - one look at HMV's Hard chart the week Westlife What About Now hit, shows they were top not Cole! But not on the download.
Sorry to bring this up again, but I-Tunes is still not playing ball with any act that doesn't come from the USA. Now it's Robbie turn to get a low position compared with other sites, there are loads of others too, but Chris Brown despite beating the crap out of Rihanna -yes he transformed her!- is doing well being from you know where!

Ghostbusters was a re-entry at no.57 in the singles chart up to Sunday just gone. This week it is outside the 100.
Next week: Back in the top 40?
The fact this is likely to be true was the single being on the top 100 at the time they performed it, making it readily and easily available for all the John and Edward fans to download.
That track is a quarter of a century old, and it's highly likely most of the Jedward followers (young kids) will NOT have heard of Ray Parker Junior until now. That being said makes me wonder why Simon kept them in and got rid of Lucie.
Did Cowell know Ghostbusters was in the charts last weekend?
Is that the reason why he was so controversial in keeping the twins in, knowing what could happen to the single after this Sunday, and is he going to continue to be controversial and get rid of the best singers on the show, just because of Jedwards popularity amongst their young followers?
It's time the public stopped voting for his acts he mentors just to give him a taste of his own medicine.
As for Cheryl Cole's single Fight for this Love, I must say how very much I like it..... That's the CLUBLAND 16 ALBUM remix version of it, done brilliantly by Ultrabeat. (That's out now and top of the compilation charts... or is in the shop I bought it at).
Ghostbusters the movie featuring that track is also on TV every 6 months or so, so kids will know it well
In fact the track that Lucie sang and Daniel's Purple Rain made the two download charts already said!
Steve thanks for the support, as you can see I am still boring everyone!!!
It must have been post 3 not being able to take anybody else's views into account.
Perhaps he/she only wants to read dating adverts!
I just want to clarify that the Yahoo! Music User in post 3 (me!) is not the same one in post 12 (some other idiot!). I read your input with interest each week and would certainly not post anything that derides other contributors.
On a different matter does anyone know anything about the 'Chartjackers' with 'I've got nothing'? It looks like it might enter the 40 on Sunday.

Don't expect Leona to be no.1 this Sunday. Will young's new single is likely to flop. And Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas" has re-entered at no.171 this week. Merry Christmas!
- not 8. You have to count 'Hallelujah', by Alexandra Burke.
It was No.1 on W/E 10th January - the first Chart of 2009,
as far as The OCC are concerned. It does not matter that it
was also No.1 for 2 Weeks in 2008 - it is still a 2009 No.1
too. Add in 'Bad Boys', & she is the 9th Act to have 2 No.1
Singles in 2009. (Which is the most ever - in a Calendar Year).
JLS - also, no-one seems to have noticed that JLS are the
1st British Black Group to have 2 No.1 Singles. It has taken
1112 No.1's, & 57 Years of the Singles Chart, to get there.
The closest British Black Group to manage it before, were
Real Thing. They had a No.1, ('You To Me Are Everything'),
& a No.2, ('Cant Get By Without You'), in 1976.
I'm NOT talking about 2 No.1 Singles in a Calendar Year -
I mean 2 No.1 Singles in a British Black Group's entire
Career. JLS are the only such Group to achieve it.
I have checked over & over, & no other British Black Group
have had 2 No.1 Singles - JLS truly are the first. (Before
anyone jumps in with. 'Boney M did it, in 1978!', etc., I should
stress - I'm on about BRITISH Black Groups - and Boney M
were not from the UK/Britain....._
If anyone is interested it's a children in need thing, connected with BBC switch. The video is on youtube and it sounds like Mcfly meets Demi Lovato! It's also only on I-Tunes, rather stupid, if you ask me, as it's for charity and they clearly want it to sell, so at least they should make it more available!
However it's also complete and utter crap!
It will probably go down as the worst charity single to date.
Next week also will see the battle between X-Factor charity single You Are Not Alone and Bandaged All You Need Is Love!
Cowell VS Wogan!!!
Am I the only person to think 'But JLS aren't black?' in reply to Andre (post 19).
