Week Ending August 16th 2008

Posted Mon 11 Aug 2008 10:08AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Sometimes the inevitable does happen. Was it really ever conceivable that America's pop sensation of the year was not going to also top the singles chart here? For the second time in recent months, the US and UK singles charts are perfectly synchronised with 'I Kissed A Girl' by Katy Perry sitting prettily at the very top. As we mentioned last week, 'I Kissed A Girl' boasts Cathy Dennis and Dr Luke amongst its credited songwriters, making this the first chart-topping single penned in part by the pair since 'About You Now' by the Sugababes at the tail end of last year. Also picking up his share of the royalties is Max Martin whose prodigious songwriting talents have not rewarded him with a Number One single in this country for what seems like years. In actually fact it is - the last Max Martin co-composition to top the singles chart here was Britney Spears' 'Oops! I Did It Again' way back in 2000 and the halcyon days of the Cheiron studios hit factory.

With Katy Perry arriving at the top and with Kid Rock's spell at Number One lasting all of a week, we are in the quite unusual situation of having the Top 3 populated entirely by Number One hits, Dizzee Rascal still clinging on at Number 3 with 'Dance Wiv Me'. The next highest charting former Number One is Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' which faded quickly after its spell at the top back in June but which now is starting to gain its long expected second wind now that it is officially a single and has a video to accompany it. The track turns and walks four places, rising 18-14.

So now to The Verve, a band whose long and storied history is pretty much defined by the stormy relationship between lead singer and chief songwriter Richard Ashcroft and guitarist Nick McCabe. The tale begins in the late 1980s when the group formed in Wigan whilst still at school. Signed to a major label in 1993, they released two well received albums until Ashcroft and McCabe decided they hated each other too much to carry on and split the back in 1995. Two years later they made up and reformed to release the near legendary 'Urban Hymns' album which featured famous singles 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' and 'The Drugs Don't Work' only for the pair to discover during the subsequent tour that they still hated each other after all. By 1999 The Verve were finished once again, this time apparently for good after Ashcroft embarked on a well received if unspectacular solo career. You can probably guess what is coming next - last summer Ashcroft announced that the group had buried the hatchet once again and following some low key warm up gigs they returned to the studio to record what would be only their fourth full studio album and their first in almost eleven years.

The lead single from the new album was always going to be a smash hit, particularly after their triumphant return to the Glastonbury stage earlier in the summer where they closed their set with the new song. So it proves, with 'Love Is Noise' landing effortlessly at Number 5 on digital sales alone and in what must be a commanding position for when it goes physical next week, singles which are almost certain to be snapped up by legions of old school fans keen to get their hands on the first piece of merchandise from their heroes in over a decade. Critical reaction to the track itself has been mixed to say the least, the song winning as much praise for its trademark addictiveness and energy as it has criticism for being, well, not quite what people expected as well as sounding disturbingly like The Mission in places. Needless to say you have to listen to it with an open mind. To expect them to reunite and simply pick up where they left off a decade ago is wishful thinking to say the least. 'Love Is Noise' is the sound of The Verve making records for 2008 and seen in that context it is nothing less than magnificent.

Needless to say the return of The Verve has had a beneficial effect on sales of their back catalogue. The 'Urban Hymns' album rises to Number 61 whilst its most famous cut 'Bitter Sweet Symphony' languishes at Number 64 having already appeared at Number 58 earlier in the summer. These are its first singles chart appearances since its original 1997 run where it peaked at Number 2.

The final new arrival to the Top 10 is 'Disturbia' from Rihanna which soars 34-9 to put to rest any fears that this would be a single too far from the 'Good Girl Gone Bad' album. For those keeping track this is now effectively the seventh hit in a row to be spawned by the long player and the fifth to go Top 10. The first four were from the original release; 'Umbrella', 'Shut Up And Drive', Hate That I Love You' and 'Don't Stop The Music' all released last year. 2008 saw the "reloaded" re-release of the disc with new tracks added, opening the way for 'Take A Bow', 'Disturbia' and the Maroon 5 collaboration 'If I Never See Your Face Again' to all invade the singles chart. Few and far between are the albums which are successfully mined for as many as seven Top 40 hits, 'Good Girl Gone Bad' the first I can easily recall since 'janet' from Janet Jackson managed the feat between 1993 and 1995. Excluding after the fact compilations of hit singles, the all time record is held by 'Bad' by Michael Jackson which between 1987 and 1989 saw no less than nine of its eleven tracks released as singles with all but one reaching the Top 20.

With Rihanna's last hit 'Take A Bow' still selling strongly at Number 18 she yet again manages the feat of two simultaneous Top 20 hits, an honour she shares this week with both Chris Brown and the Ting Tings who have both 'Shut Up And Let Me Go' at Number 11 and former Number One 'That's Not My Name' still clinging on doggedly at Number 20.

New to the Top 40 at Number 23 is the all-star trio of Nelly, Akon and Ashanti with 'Body On Me'. The track is Nelly's second hit of the year, the follow up to 'Party People' which peaked at Number 14 in early June with Fergie on co-vocals. Unusually for an R&B collaboration, 'Body On Me' can claim a shared ownership as it not only features on Nelly's current 'Brass Knuckles' album but is also featured on Ashanti's own 'The Declaration'. This actually gives the single more than the usual curiosity value as neither album is currently selling in sufficient quantities to claim a place in the Top 100. Come seven days time, who will have benefitted the most from the chart performance of the single?

Finally for this week, consider for a moment the strange career of Eurodance stars Cascada who are in the strange position of being only able to have hits with insanely bad cover versions of old songs rather than their own rather more credible compositions. The singles from their second album have followed this very pattern, their take on 'What Hurts The Most' making Number 10 just before Christmas only for the follow up 'What Do You Want From Me' to flop badly last April at Number 51. The German group make their Top 40 comeback this week at Number 28 with their own extraordinary take on 'Because The Night'. Co-written by Bruce Springsteen, the track made Number 5 in 1978 for Patti Smith and to this day ranks in the minds of many as one of the great rock performances ever. So here of course lies the critics dilemma. Compared to the original, the Cascada remake is an insult, taking one of the most famous songs of its era, stripping it of all emotion and regurgitating it as brainless dance gunk. Hear it with no knowledge of its history however and it is actually enormously appealing, a great song immaculately produced and a storming dancefloor anthem. It all begs the question - which is the correct approach to take?

I was expecting more from Coldplay's Viva La Vida's video... It didn't do the song any justice at all!

2. Charles -
I alsol meant to add that I was expecting Coldplay's video to be along the line of My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade, which is my opinion is ACE! What's your fav video?

3. Jimmy -
Rather than lurid speculations on her opportunistic use of sexuality to sell records, surely the more pertinent question on hearing Katy Perry's deep and gravelly voice is how on earth was she ever a gospel singer?!

Also a typo: surely you mean it was Cathy Dennis and Dr Luke, not Max Martin, who together wrote 'About You Now'.

How much more life do you think 'Viva La Vida' has in it as a physical release: any more weeks in the Top 10 ahead?

4. Tina -
Agree Charles Y. I get the impression it was done as an after-thought and on the cheap and that the band really couldn't be bothered with it. It was a little like doing a job weeks after being paid for doing it.

5. James -
What an awful song to have topped the charts this week, particularly in the week of my birthday :( don't see why everyone is prraising it...

Once again, a boring and predictable chart this week. Kid Rock wasn't going to last more than a week at the top.

I agree with James that Cascada are only scoring hits by doing (awful) covers of old songs. But then again, was there ever a time when someone covered a old song and mad it better? erm, no! Leona Lewis ruined Kelly Clarksons "A Moment Like This," Mcfly's cover of "Don't Stop Me Now," was abysmal, like all their own music, and don't even get me started on Amy Winehouses cover of Valerie!

I guess Rihanna must have scrapped the release of Rehab, which is good. The less singles she releases, the better lol

Poor Scouting For Girls. Only at #38. Well lets see if it goes higher...And at least it fared better than Sam Sparros follow up, which didn't even reach the top 40! I predict him a One Hit Wonder...

According to a "very reliable," Wikipedia, Ne-yo is releasing his next single (Miss Independent) next week. Erm, but isn't Closer still in the Top 10??? If Wikipedia is correct for once, then i think this one will flop. Its a rubbish song anyway...

Katy Perry is just following in the footsteps of the likes of Madonna (like a virgin, like a prayer etc) with this one. Wonder if it will ever make the Iranian charts??? Should prove a good money maker for her though and will be at the top for a good while.

Nice to see Katy Perry at the top a well deserved No.1. It is about time that a decent pop track finally invades the No.1 spot. Can't wait to see her in London on the 24th Sept. Also fantastic to see The Verve back inside the top 5 after 9 years of being away, I cannot wait for their album and hope they can surpass ''Urban Hymns''. Cannot believe Rihanna is still spawning hits from an album that was released last year. She gave us the wettest summer in history last year with her 10 week reign at the top, then has just never stopped releasing songs. Her album is pretty good, but your running out of tracks to release there isn't that many on there to be releasing 7! To my disgust but also very happy that this certain person is unable to reach the top 10 with absolute nonsence is Cascada. The woman really frustrates me with her annoying covers and cheesy euro pop beats, didn't realise hetr last track flopped miserably it would have made my day! So it makes my day today. 'Beacuse The Night' stalls at No.28, hope this is her peak and drops out the top 50 by next week!
No approach is right from Cascada, I think she should give it up an dget her roots done- ouch!

Oh, and in response to Charles Y, my fav video is probably "Just Lose It," by Eminem. :)
And in response to jimmy280783, maybe a very brief return to the top 10 for "Viva La Vida," otherwise, i see it just bouncing around the top 20 for a while :)

The Cascada track is a direct rip off a long forgotten Euro disco hit from the early 1990's.

CO:RO featuring Talessa's version is exactly the same as Cascada's. So much so that if I was CO:RO i'd have a word with the lawyers!

Go to youtube.com and you will see what I mean.

10. Benjamin -
o101 - Are you getting confused? The production isn't very similar to the CoRo version at all. There's isn't a law against doing a cover if someone's already covered it!

If it sounds like any other version, it's the 2001 Jan Wayne version.

11. Benjamin -
And it's interesting what you say about it James, because I'm not that familiar with the original myself and I do actually think if you forget that it's a cover it is actually a much better record than What Do You Want From Me, which I think why it's a bigger hit.

12. James -
I really can't wait to see how Chris Browns re-release of Kiss Kiss will fare in September. It definitely deserves a place in the Top 20 at the least. :) He also needs to re-release Wall To Wall, which reached #75 on downloads last year, and in my opinion is a bit underrated :)

13. AJG -
One cover version which was much better than the original was The Damned's "Eloise". Generally though, I agree, cover versions are rarely any good. What gets on my nerves is when someone covers a song and does it exactly the same as the old version, such as Atomic Kitten's "Eternal Flame". It seems rather pointless - why not just buy the original?

From what I can gather, ABBA Gold may not even be ABBA Bronze if the info I have is correct and the album is currently the fifth longest running on the UK charts, with 366 weeks on chart, though they will certainly overtake Pink Floyd at No.4 in two weeks time.

Though ABBA still has some way to go to overtake the following top 3:

1. Fleetwood Mac - Rumours, 1977 (478 weeks)
2. Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell, 1978 (474 weeks)
3. Queen - Greatest Hits, 1981 (450 weeks)
4. Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon, 1973 (367 weeks)

But to put it in context, the only album released after ABBA Gold in the top 20 is Nirvana's Nevermind on 196 weeks. Jeez, I'm behaving like a right old Stats Freak!

Patti Smith Group's original 1978 hit version of Because The Night is a pop/rock classic that will never be beaten. The sheer energy of Patti's vocals are no match for today's lame dance cover versions. Why oh why can't acts write decent original material today? Where's all the creativity gone?

How many more classic 70s and 80s hits have to be ruined by dreadful covers
because today's acts can't write a decent song or tune?

It's bad enough with the relentless conveyor belt of remixed or repacked old hits let alone all these dreadful covers.

16. brett -
A crying shame that such a bag of [profane]e knocked Kid Rock off number 1, but I can't say I'm surprised!
I tried to buy The Verve's single in HMV today and was informed that the release has been delayed a week, meaning next weeks chart should see very little change at the top end.

A couple more comments:

Any one know what prompted Baz Lurman's return to the top 75?

Didn't R Kelly also manage 7 top 40 hits from one album in the late 90's including "If I could turn back the hands of time" I seem to recall Mark Goodier commenting on it in the days when the top 40 show was accurate and focussed on the chart rather than banter!

18. Stuart -
Why the sudden rise again for Nickelback from 55 into the Top 30. Is it because of those furniture ads? If so then why hasn't the leap happened before when those ads were first used 3 weeks ago?

19. Yahoo! Music User -
Strange to see Rockstar back in the top 30.
I'm surprised James didn't mention this, in his chart summary for this week,as this is a major suprise for the chart, especially as it had spent 28 or 29 weeks in the chart previously.
