Week Ending August 23rd 2008

Posted Sun 17 Aug 2008 10:34PM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

According to a well known Irish newspaper this week, it was a little over the top for me to celebrate the chart performance of 'The Man Who Can't Be Moved' by The Script as something that reaffirms your faith in mankind. Well they can sod off because it still holds true particularly this week as the single not only climbs back into the Top 3 but their self titled album crashes straight in at Number One to prompt lovely warm feelings amongst music fans everywhere. Also benefitting as a knock-on effect is their earlier Top 20 single 'We Cry' which re-enters the Top 40 this week and sits comfortably at Number 33.

The Script sit in the Top 3 of the singles chart locked in behind the seemingly immovable Katy Perry and Kid Rock who hold steady at 1 and 2 respectively. All this is to the detriment of The Verve who despite the presumed surge from physical sales of 'Love Is Noise' can only creep up one place to Number 4, a placing which you suspect is as good as they are going to get. Word is as well that the love/hate/love/hate/love/hate dynamic within the band is swinging over to the "hate" stage again, so make the most of them while they are around.

The biggest new single of the week is one which arrives seemingly from nowhere - 'Beggin' from Madcon gatecrashes the Top 10 at Number 7. The song is one with a long and chequered history, recorded originally by the Four Seasons who made the Top 20 of the US chart in 1967. Their version was never a hit here, and most people are familiar with the track thanks to a cover by Timebox a year later which was a minor Top 40 hit in the summer of 1968. The Four Seasons version finally made the UK chart just over a year ago thanks to an innovative remix by French producer Pilooski which twisted the original Bob Crewe production in several strange new directions, although despite much hype it could only reach Number 32. As a result the Madcon rendition can lay claim to be the first ever major hit version of the song. A hit in their native Norway last year, the single is that all too rare beast - a hip hop reworking of a classic which treats the source material with genuine respect. Hence the rap breaks dovetail seamlessly with the 60s beats and raw, soulful chorus to make a single which stands head and shoulders above just about any comparable single you have heard all year. Or maybe I'm just being over the top again, you decide.

Also back inside the Top 10 is a single which neatly proves I'm right about something for a change. When Coldplay's 'Viva La Vida' bolted swiftly down the chart after its brief cup of coffee at Number One a month or so back, we speculated here that it stood a very good chance of returning once it became a single for real and promotional activity and airplay shifted away from the then still current 'Violet Hill'. So it proves and so the lavish epic now moves 14-10 to return to the Top 10 after a six week absence. Expecting it to return to the very top is perhaps just a little too much to ask for, but as the greatest single they ever will make it deserved more than just a perfunctory chart run and this I suspect should ensure its sales longevity.

At Number 16 is 'Mercury', the well anticipated brand new single from Bloc Party which debuted to much fanfare on the radio last month following a well seeded viral campaign which saw their official website turn itself into a countdown that ultimately pointed to the Zane Lowe show on Radio One which had the historic first play. A track that is set to appear on their as yet untitled third album, it is a natural successor to their last single 'Flux', drenching the group in electronics and phase-distortions to mesmerising effect. Will it wind up as their fifth Top 10 hit single? I'll keep my options open for now.

A trio of new singles invade the Top 30 and they are led at Number 26 by a single which marks the triumphant reinvention of a very underrated performer. Imaani Coppola began her career as a solo artist, signing to Columbia records when she was just a teenager. Although big things were expected of her, she turned out to be just a one hit wonder, her debut single 'Legend Of A Cowgirl' becoming a minor Number 32 hit here in early 1998 despite copious radio airplay and a genuine selling point in its reworking of the old Donovan classic 'Sunshine Superman'. When her album failed to sell she was dropped like the proverbial hot potato and spent years in independent artist wilderness, her only other chart credit coming in 2001 when she appeared on the Baha Men's 'You All Dat'.

Following a spell with all-star collective Peeping Tom in 2005 she apparently rediscovered her commercial magic and as if to put the past firmly behind her has now reinvented herself as Little Jackie, even if her alter-ego is possibly the worst kept secret in the history of music. The great news is that her debut/comeback single is insanely, gloriously good. 'The World Should Revolve Around Me' is a sassy, summery Motown pastiche with a feelgood vibe that belies the tongue in cheek feminist mantra of its lyrics. The kind of single you hear once and fall in love with forever, it is heading for the Top 10 within weeks if there is any justice in the world.

Coincidentally there is a Motown vibe running through the next single down, the handclap beats from 'Where Did Our Love Go' providing the base for 'I Decided' from Solange. Her big selling point is of course the family collection given that she is of course Beyonce's baby sister, one listen to the delicate tremolo in her voice indicating that the two ladies have more in common that just their looks. Her first attempt at musical stardom actually came five years ago with her album 'Solo Star' but it was never granted a UK release, making this single her British chart debut. The track itself is the very definition of breezy, a simply jazz piano and double bass providing the bulk of the instrumentation in a record that may not be an immediate smash but which virtually demands a second listen.

This has been a rather gushing and enthusiastic piece this week hasn't it? Damn all these acts for releasing singles that are hard for a reviewer to hate. Next in line are Keane who are now in "difficult" third album territory having possibly milked the pretty vocals and tinkling piano formula as far as they can with their previous two releases 'Hopes And Fears' and 'Under The Iron Sea'. Hence 'Spiralling', the first single from forthcoming new album 'Perfect Symmetry' is a rather unexpected surprise, a single replete with buzzing synths and razor edge guitars that would not have sounded out of place in the charts of 1984. Critical reception to the single has been enthusiastic to say the least, although I'm not totally convinced this isn't out of a sense of relief that they have mixed it up and done something new rather than serve up another sugar sweet dose of the same old material. For the brand new single from a band as big a name as they are, a Number 28 first week entry has to be regarded as something of a muted welcome and whilst it may be the most negative thing you read about it all week, for the moment it has failed to convince commercially.

Next week - Oasis are back.

So... The Verve could not quite make it to the top! Slightly gutted as I think it does deserve the top spot such a catchy tune. Obviously it was going to be hard for them with the infectious tune Katy Perry who now spends a 2nd week at the top. Not much movement in the chart as all the older hits still performing well inside the top 20. Can Solange get any furthet than No.27? Not lookin' forward to the Oasis comeback... how they are still going I don't know! Bring on The Verve album... ''Four''.

That Madcon single reminds me of Gnarls Barkley, but should definitely climb the charts in the next couple of weeks. It sticks in your head. Other than that I find the chart increasingly embarrassing by the week. Just who exactly is buying this s**t! Radio airplay seems to be controling it. A lot. Katy Perry and Kid Rock. Go figure. It's looking more and more like the US Billboard Charts.

It's a bit unfair to dismiss the Keane single at the moment as it was a free download until Monday, so to enter the charts at 28 after this fact is spectacular!

Whoa! Madcon single truly rocks. The best I have heard so far this year but possibly would be the best ever for 2008.
Just simply amazing. I do hope it will crash the number 1 spot next week. It has to, what, with a killer chorus and excellent video.

Can't help thinking of Outkast when hearing this track from Madcon. Seems like they, Outkast, would be good enough to record such track. Alas, with their superstars ego (like many other Hip Hop singers) and fat bank balance, their creativity flow stopped the moment they hit the bigtime.

Here's to Madcon for making it hip to hop on the dancefloor

I almost like Beggin' by Madcon.
If there was just singing, and no rap, it would be very good.

Yet another boring chart this week.
To be expected though, as not much about till september, when new releases start to flood in, like the fantastic new song from Queen & Paul Rodgers.

Lousy and dull chart again this week...

i was glad too know that there were quite a few new entries in the chart this week, (giving there are hardly any everyweek anymore) sadly i think they are all rubbish. Don't think that Madcon song is any good (sorry people), that Bloc Party song was naff, and so was that little jackie song and that solange song. I thought for a while it sounded just like her older sister lol
I don't even think much of Keanes new single, and i love their music. Very dissapointing chart this week...:(

And James, a very good chart blog as always :) but how come you haven't made any references to the performance of "Body on Me," by Nelly? It was released physically last week, but its only creeped up from #23-#17. Unless it goes higher, id say its rather a dissapointing comeback for an artist who scored plenty of top 10 hits in the past and even about 3-4 #1s, as his previous single with Fergie missed out on the Top 10 aswell...

Poor Scouting For Girls. The Re-release didn't even outpeak the original release :(

I hope "Forever," by Chris Brown falls down the chart quickly to make room for his upcoming single "Kiss Kiss," :)

Btw whats happening about PCD new song "When I Grow Up,"? i don't like it at all, but im surprised its not even in the top 75 as i see it on the music channels almost every 10 MINUTES! lol

I was hoping that now Kylie's 'The One' actually has a video it might have chart prospects, but I guess becoming a Top 10 hit was too much too expect. I think the video really suits the sons, and look good on TV (although it has been accused of being cheap!). All seems very odd to release a video now - I heard that Kylie made it without record company involvement. How about sticking it in a DVD single with some tracks, including the remix, and it might still not be too late. Wishful thinking! Amazingly enough I heard 'The One' being played on Radit Humberside! They obviously have good tast (don't tell anyone I listened to BBC local radio though!). Shows my age!

My CD single withdrawal sypmtoms continue. I have given up going to HMV. Also, this means I have stopped buying CD albums and general interest seems to be reduced! Could the killing of CD singles maybe explain why overall CD sales are falling (of albums) and music magazines are selling less, or I am desperately trying to justify why CD singles should come back!!! I think it is a lost course. Maybe I could put a petition on Number 10 website for Kylie to release The One on CD. Give Gordon Brown a real concern. He can stopping worrying about Georgia (on his mind) and worry about Kylie. Me might end up a bit more lucky (lucky, lucky!) then!

I meant the video really suits the song! Not the sons (I must have been thinking of Sons and Daughters)!!!

I don't think the Pussycat Dolls single is due for release until September Huntj008 i couldn't find it on itunes the other day.

Don't know where anyone gets the idea that single sales (including downloads) is falling. True the top 3 singles don't sell as much as they used to! However the rest of the chart sells the same as the 90's. For instance it takes 40,000 to make the top 40. Then right up to around no.5... I know that the industry say around a 1000 for 40, but that's stupid!
All you need to is sell around 5 tracks a week from 7000 outlets and bingo!

Maybe we shoud get Cheeky Girls back and that would be un-dull your week:-)

Graham, post 11

not sure where you're getting your figures from, or if there is a typo in your post.

Katy Perry sold 44500 copies this week to be number 1. If you accidently tagged a 0 on the end of your 4000, then that probably be right. Tracks selling 4000 or so would make the top 40 (depending on the week of course), but Kid Rock at number 2 sold less than 30000 copies this week.

And is it just me, or are Alphabeat as catchy as hell. I really shouldnt like them, but every single released by them has been better than the previous one. Boyfriend, currently at no49 will surely climb much much higher, and quite rightly so!

I've had the fortune to moniter single sales since 1990 and I know that records sell in small numbers according to the music industry, but is simply not true.
Put it this way if you put that sales figure of 4000 (four thousand) and devide that by the 7000 retailers it means that they sold only half a copy per week each.
I think some of the London stores of would go bust selling one single per week.
One per week 7000 that's twice (nearly) the 3000 for the 40! ha ha ha OCC!
You can also tell that sales figures are wrong as the OCC chart never reflects itself.
Again the top 40 is displayed in many stores both online and in shops, so a single leaving that chart will fall even worse and they don't often.

So for your pleasure here's the top ten sales this week of the OCC chart (in thousands)
1 69
2 56
3 42
4 52
5 47
6 40
7 41
8 40
9 40
10 40

It is also of note that Duffy (mercy), Flo Rida, Nickleback and Basshunter have sold over a million copies this year. (none in the real top 40)
They have a long way to reach the 8 million (UK only)of Elton John's Candle in the wind.
Alphabeat are by the way being fiddled out of a top 40 place it should be number 13, if they counted right at OCC!

16. Yahoo! Music User -
forgive my ignorance but where do those figures then come from Graham. I also look at the Music Week website (where I can tell those above figures of 44500 sales for Katy Perry come from.) The esteemed Alan Jones provides this commentary and I can't see why he, or anyone else for that matter would want to underrepresent sales. If you numbers are correct they should be championed rather than played down. For far too long we have been told that the industry is in decline.

if you can tell us the source of your info that would be useful for me to understand - without it, I'm going with the OCC!

and of course shops do not rely on half a single to be solvent! they arent selling just that per week!! lol

17. Iain -
You've tried this here before Graham. Exactly what sales are the OCC not counting?

18. Yahoo! Music User -
sorry did i start this sales falling argument. What i meant was that perhap ALBUM sales are falling as there is not so much need to pop in to HMV (as there are no singles to buy).also buying a cd single would often motivate me to go and buy the album especially if the extra sides were good! maybe i am just getting old! jane mcdonald rocks (although i can't helped but be pleased her album is selling well! i am sure the asda adverts in the coronation street advert tonight will help). by the way why did the last contestant on X factor not admit to being in PHIXX? Is it a fix! They had about 4 hits (I have all the CD SINGLES, but don't tell anyone). I just don't believe he earns his income in Bingo halls?

Katy's chart topper appears to be faltering already. 40k plus sales in your first two weeks at the top isn't bad but the fact she's lost 1000 or so buyers this week must cast a doubt over the songs ability to remain there. Will it be Oasis who knock her off her perch? Past trends for the Gallagher's suggest that, like McFly, their fan base buy the majority of units during the first week of release, after which time, the song drops like a stone off the chart. Previous number 1's by the group, "The importance of being idle", "Lyla" and "Hindu times" have shifted 47K, 75k and 116K worth of units respectively. Sales and their popularity however appear to be declining and their last song "Lord don't Slow me down" just scraped into the top 10 at 10 and lasted a poultry 3-weeks on the chart. So will they spoil Katy's party for her next week? I don't somehow think that they will but I also don't expect Katy to be number 1 either.
