Week Ending September 6th 2008

Posted Mon 1 Sep 2008 10:23AM BST by James Masterton in Chart Watch UK

Swedish DJ and producer Eric Prydz is a very busy man. Not only does he have club gigs to play all over Europe, when at home he has remix work to do as well as running several different labels which serve as outlets for his many musical projects. Small wonder then that the time he has for releasing singles under his own name is limited and precious, even if he somehow has the knack of producing a worldwide smash hit every single time.

Hence Number One 'Call On Me' in late 2004 was not followed until early 2007 by Number 2 single 'Proper Education' and now 19 months on from that last hit he finally has a third consecutive Top 3 hit to his name as 'Pjanoo' smashes its way onto the singles chart at Number 2. Popular legend has it that the lush instrumental was something he knocked together some time ago and which remained a forgotten curiosity until he one day slipped it into a DJ set which was posted online. The resultant surge in interest in the piece has now prompted its full release and its transformation into the dance sensation of the summer. Unlike his previous hits, 'Pjanoo' is not constructed around the bones of an old song. Instead it is an absorbing chill-out track based around nothing more than a simple piano riff that is joined by progressively more layers of instrumentation until before fading away to simplicity once more. Instrumental tracks which become instant classics are few and far between, so the presence of 'Pjanoo' is something to be appreciated with wonder. In sales terms its release ran Number One incumbent Katy Perry very close indeed but in the end had to settle for waiting patiently whilst she spends her fourth week at the top with 'I Kissed A Girl'. Few would offer odds against this position changing next week.

Really it is just as well we have Eric to save us as apart from him Top 10 action is very limited indeed. Rihanna eases up a notch to claim the final Top 3 place with 'Disturbia', the 561st single from the album now ranking as its third biggest hit behind Number One hits 'Umbrella' and 'Take A Bow'. Biffy Clyro surge forward to Number 5 as physical sales of 'Mountains' are added to the mix, as we mentioned last week the CD single of the track being a rather more necessary purchase than usual given that they have no plans for an album until well into next year.

Notably tumbling still are The Verve who slip 7-9 with 'Love Is Noise' although of course this comes in the same week that much anticipated comeback album 'Forth' storms to the top of the album chart, a full 11 years since its predecessor 'Urban Hymns' also did the same.

New to the singles chart at Number 12 are Glasvegas with second chart hit 'Daddy's Gone'. This is the direct followup to 'Geraldine' which gave the Scottish foursome their first ever hit single when it charted at Number 16 back in July. The new hit is to be frank, magnificent. Drowning in reverb from the start to give a warm wall of sound effect, lead singer James Allan hollers his way through the melancholy song in a manner that is both captivating and enchanting. On the podcast last week I talked about the concept of a "two listen track", the sign of a record that you want to hear for a second time immediately afterwards because it excites you that much. I'm up to about ten listens of 'Daddy's Gone' so far.

Three more singles climb into the Top 20 from the lower regions and to the delight of many leading the way are Little Jackie with 'The World Should Revolve Around Me' which vaults 21-14. I say "they" as of course technically speaking Little Jackie are a group - Imaani Coppola insists that collaborator Adam Pallin is an equal part of the creative process. Nonetheless virtually all the marketing and promotional interest in the song has centred around Imaani and her big musical comeback a decade in the making - rightly so in fairness.

One step behind are Alphabeat who move 35-15 with new single 'Boyfriend' to give them their third Top 20 hit of the year and the second biggest, this track now beating by one place the May peak of '10,000 Nights'. The group and their music still for some reason remain something of an acquired taste. By rights there should be something quite magical about an album made to sound like it had dropped out of a wormhole from 1986 and indeed 'Boyfriend' is another three minutes of delicious nostalgia which conjures up images of hairspray and big eyeliner and Madonna when she was bright, bubbly and endearingly chubby. Nonetheless there is still something rather jarring about the way it is presented to a 2008 audience. Whereas the Scissor Sisters did pop nostalgia in a bright, knowing manner where you know they were loving every moment of wrapping up their music in as much cheese as possible, Alphabeat you get the feeling are deadly serious about what they are doing and firmly believe this is how music is still supposed to sound. For that reason I just can't get into them at all.

Also on the move are Metallica who move from 36 to what is in truth a rather surprising Number 19, most predictors almost certain they were going to gatecrash the Top 10 once their new single had a full week of sales under its belt. In part this could be due to competition from the band themselves as they have this week taken the unique step of releasing the second single from the album just a few days after the first. Hence 'My Apocalpse' appeared in online stores on Tuesday last week and now charts at Number 51. They can at least take some comfort from the continuing singles chart invasion of the best bits of their newly digitised back catalogue. 'Nothing Else Matters' is now at 47, 'Enter Sandman at 52 and further down 'One' is languishing at Number 96. The interest in their old songs is quite fascinating, especially as everyone I knew downloaded a copy of their entire catalogue at the start of the decade, just because they knew it would make Lars Ulrich unhappy.

To wrap things up this week, a notorious second generation star finally makes her Top 40 debut as Miley Cyrus lands at Number 23 with 'See You Again'. The appeal of the teen star is of course confined to the dedicated group of teens who are glued to her adventures as Hannah Montana in the Disney Channel series but her arrival on the chart means she follows neatly in the footsteps of her father Billy Ray Cyrus whose one and only brush with fame came in the summer of 1992 (a couple of months before Miley herself was born) when 'Achy Breaky Heart' became a worldwide sensation and a Number 3 smash hit here. Cyrus senior is forever labelled as an annoying one hit wonder although the followup 'Could've Been Me' did creep to Number 24 in October that year. His last brush with chart fame came at the end of 1992 when for reasons best known to himself he collaborated on an Alvin and the Chipmunks remake of his most famous hit which made Number 53 for Christmas. Perhaps after that it is for the best that he concentrated on raising a clean cut starlet of the future, timed nicely so he can play her fictional father in the TV series as well.

561st single? Very funny, James!

I guess Eric Prydz's Pjanoo made a right timing, No. 1 next week?

You didn't mention The Script slipping to No. 4! My goodness it's No. 2 last week!

2. Regino -
Also, wait a second... Is Save The Lies following the same pattern as Sweet About Me? Wish you buy it or you blame yourselves?

3. James -
You could have mentioned Ne-Yo's new entry at number 39 this week...apart from that great blog as always james!

Congrats on Alphabeat on scoring their third top 20 hit :)

Would someone please help me to confirm when Chris Browns "Kiss Kiss," is getting released? I know its either the 8th Sept or 15th Sept but Wikipedia keeps changing it!

Hate every song in the top 10 this week except All Summer Long (but even thats starting to get on my nerves abit so in conclusion boring and rubbish top 10 this week). I think its obvious Rihanna will unfortunately score her third UK number 1 in due time...

Re: James's comment on Alphabeat - this IS how music is supposed to sound, dear. It's not their fault that everyone else is churning out nonsense.

(I'm sure I don't need to mention on here about the a-maaaa-zing Pete Hammond - of PWL fame - remix of Boyfriend, btw).

Strangely Boyfriend and 10,000 Nights don't seem to be able to make the top 10, yet all their singles seem to be quite sticky on the Top 75 overall.

Post 3

Why would you hate all of it??? Don't you like Pjanoo?
Well, I wanted All Summer Long and Dance Wiv Me to get out of Top 10, they don't need to be there anymore.

Isn't Bryn Christopher's Smilin' is released today? It might skyrocket to the Top 10. Great song and you will like it.

Oh no, the faux lesbian hasnt been knocked off the top spot! The track itsself is beginning to annoy me as much as the woman singing it.

So surprised and happy to see Eric Prydz at number 2. I first heard the song a few weeks ago and i wasnt too sure about it but since then its really been growing on me. Love the melodramatic piano riffs that build up to a crescendo and then fade away right at the end. Infact i even love the quirky video to the track! So great to finally see an accompanying video to a dance track that doesnt feature semi naked girls trying too hard to look convincingly sexy. Im glad its his 3rd top 2 hit...although i wasnt too sure about his last hit 'proper education'.

And even better to see Rihanna climb up a place to give herself another top 3 hit. The girl is virtually unstoppable. This track has started to grow on me also although the video is just a tad too wierd for me....

So madonna shoots back up 5 places with 'Give it to me'......I wonder if it has anything to do with the certain gig she played recently?! Still not too sure about this one though....its definitely not her strongest release in recent years.

I noticed Chicane and natasha bedingfield just falling outside the top 40 this week. Has it had its great fanfare release on CD or is it still available on download only? Never been a big fan of natasha bedingfield myself but crossing genres and experimenting can only be a good thing i guess. Lets see where this one ends up next week...

OMG cant believe Gabriella Cilmi's new release has dropped out of the top 40 altogether. Its a great little number and her voice is amazing. I wasnt a big fan of 'Sweet about me' as i found this more commercially appealing. The charts are a wierd place right now....as seen by Solange's fall from the higher end of the back end of the charts. I love 'i decided' with its wonderfully retro motown feel. Cant understand why people prefer the beyonce formulaic crapola.......

Anyone know when the Pussycat Dolls release their new single. Its been weeks since its been playing on the music channels and weeks since ive seen their interviews, but nothing has come to fruition as yet. I wonder whats cooking up with them at the moment. seems like its been a worldwide hit elsewhere so why the delay? Wierd charts indeedy!

xXx

Is this the first chart in which none of the Top 3 are available to buy physically? Katy Perry & Eric Prydz are released on 1st Sept and there is no release date scheduled for Rihanna.

8. Regino -
Post 7

Katy Perry's single is available physically (I don't know when, maybe August 4) and Eric Prydz's single is just last Monday.

I don't know to Rihanna's Disturbia. They said Sept 15 or 22, I don't know.

Re: why Gabriella Cilmi's latest isn't selling. A theory I have is that it may have something to do with the song title. The chorus and catchy part of the song is about 'better be good to me' instead of the title 'save the lies'. When people are searching for this song on i-tunes will they struggle to find it because they are looking for the wrong song title?

10. CJ -
Some of you make me laugh when you when you think Eric Prydz is gonna be number 1 next week, its obviously gonna be Katy Perry still.

Nice to see Madonna going up and some old songs of Metallica too

Post 9

That can be true but what about Careless Whisper, um... Miss Independent (even though I heard it once), Clubbed to Death, Enter Sandman or Great DJ (even though mentioned, it's not on the chorus and that is the only catchy bit)?

Post 10

We will never know but in theory, the sales of I Kissed A Girl might be bit lower than last week while Eric Prydz's single just starting to get his a** up.

Gutted that Glasvegas didn't make the top 10, as it is an absolutely fantastic track, even if the original version that they released a year ago was better. And Biffy Clyro making it into the Top 5! proof that bands can and do grow in commercial stature over time, something that many record companies would do well to note.

Still, one of the many great things about the chart these days is that records do climb, and there is much more unpredictability than there was til recently, when the focus on first week sales made it all so naff.

13. Yahoo! Music User -
Katy's week on week sales are still steadily declining. As long as Eric Prydz or any other artiste can achieve a weekly sale of over 40,000 units the chances are that they will make number 1 next week. Talking of which, do Oasis have the real "invisible" number 1 this week? "Falling Down" is available as a taster from their forthcoming album and is apparently disqualified from the charts.

14. Yahoo! Music User -
When HMV downloads cameback on-line last week I noticed the top 100 downloads had several tracks in of the same song. "Deportees" and by at least several artists. Anyone know why?
Also I found information that Amazon UK are going to bring in MP3 downloads and undercut ITunes! That might shake the charts up!

Speaking of back cats! When are we going to get the Beatles invasion?

Re: Post 8
Katie Perry only got released physically today 1st September as did Pjanoo so the comment about an all-download top 3 was spot on. I'm sure that hasn't happened before either.

With them both being released today it will make an interesting battle next week. Perry's sales have fallen every week since release so might be running out of steam.

One last thing - here's hoping Sonny J's 'Can't stop moving' becomes a big hit in the next few weeks. It was one of the best songs of 2007 and I could never understand how it wasn't a hit - hopefully it will be this time around.

16. Iain -
Pussycat Dolls' new single is available for download today (1st Sept) so expect it to be the highest new entry in next week's chart.

17. joel -
Eric Prydz's "Pjanoo" is SO repetitive and should really be classed as annoying and rubbish...but it so isn't! I can't get enough of it. Here's hoping to a long reign at no.1 from Sunday...

Alphabeat's "Boyfriend" is a cool tune that does bring back memories of times past and along with "10,000 Nights", may well be a top 10 hit that never was.

I totally agree with post 9. I'm sure that in the past, loads of artists have missed out on having bigger hits purely down to song titles that aren't in synch with the tune. Maybe it will reverse back up the chart to enter the top 20 though. In this day and age, anything seems possible!

Re: Phil (post 9) - it crossed my mind too that 'Save The Lies' might be suffering from Misleading Hook Syndrome! I know that a title not (obviously) representing the lyrics isn't necessarily a barrier to a song's success, but in a case like this this where another lyric is repeated so often it's actually surprising to find that it isn't the title, and where it's a new artist yet to establish a regular fanbase, i.e. where the casual listener/buyer needs things to be a little more clear, you do have to wonder...

I guess the record company have realised this as it's listed in the chart as 'Save The Lies (Good To Me)', but if you, say, look her album up on iTunes there'll be no such indication. Of course, it could just be that the song's simply too in-yer-face for many of those who fell for the deceptively, erm, sweet 'Sweet About Me'...

On the title front, though, it strikes me that this kind of thing is more likely to be a problem nowadays than up to a couple of years ago, now everyone's getting their music from a computer screen rather than a record shop - back in the day, a human assistant would have been pretty certain what you meant if you went in asking for "...that 'I'm Never Gonna Dance Again' song by George Michael...", and would have produced a copy of 'Careless Whisper' a lot more easily than if you tried to interrogate an online music store...!

19. David -
In addition, thinking about what joelymoley just said, can anyone think if there's much evidence for misleading/non-obvious titles hampering sales - especially in the case of up-and-coming acts without suffieciently knowledgeable fanbases? Obviously the likes of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Unchained Melody' weren't held back much, but they were by bigger-name acts.

On the flip side, the likes of New Order or the Bluetones almost never released songs with representative titles, and instrumentals from 'Apache' to 'Children' to 'Djanoo' have done just fine down the ages.

That reminds me: James, if you're reading, major kudos on what for some reason I found the funniest thing I've ever read on your commentary in about 11 years, a line which has stuck in my head to this day - when Da Hool charted around a decade back with instrumental dance track 'Meet Her At The Love Parade', Mr Masterton praised it (I think) but added something along the lines of, "...One thing, though: why the inventive title? They could have called it 'Toilet Duck' and no-one would've been any the wiser". Brilliant :)

20. Kim -
About Alphabeat's "serious" performance in the videos.
Well, the ORIGINAL videos from the Danish release shows them having fun. Specially "Fascination" and "10.000 Nights Of Thunder".
I guess this strange numbness in the International versions is an idea from the record company. I find it stupid myself:-)
