CMU Social debrief
So, welcome to this month's CMU Social debrief, where we will bring you tales of sights and sounds the like of which you won't believe, even if you were there and witnessed them all. Yep, let's run through what happened last night at the July CMU Social, our monthly showcase and networking night at 229 in London.
First up we saw Maths Class, a band we interviewed in Brighton at The Great Escape but completely failed to see live, despite them playing three gigs at the festival. Still, that's the benefit of having your own night and the boys didn't let us down. They played loud, fast and with an infectious energy and passion that won over the whole room instantly. Performing mainly songs from their new EP, 'Now This Will Take Two Hands' (out 21 Jul on Gift Music), the bulk of the band threw themselves around the stage, while frontman Tim Sketchley made use of the whole room, jumping up on speakers and pushing his way through the audience. Particular highlights in their set were 'Replays Of Relays', their "only pop song" 'Branches' and the new single 'Nerves'. This is a band that need to be seen and we're sure they're a band you'll be seeing a lot more of in the future.

Next, Vessels ensured the night continued to go off with a bang. Performing songs from their John Congleton-produced (Explosions In The Sky, The Polyphonic Spree) debut album, 'White Fields And Open Devices' (out 11 Aug on Cuckundoo Records), their epic, largely instrumental music is something very special. They really bring something new and unique to the post-rock genre, pushing its limits where others might hold back and bringing in touches of electronica and math-rock to add further layers. Songs will often build from something beautiful to a room-filling wall of sound, with band members often swapping instruments mid-song, and had no less than two songs featuring two drum kits. Highlights amongst their set were 'An Idle Brain And The Devil's Workshop', the single 'A Hundred Times In Every Direction' and the massive 'Look At That Cloud!'. Vessels are another band we're predicting big things for and, like Maths Class, are already drawing attention from all the right places.
