Did David Bowie Cause the Credit Crunch?

Posted Tue 13 Jan 2009 12:17PM GMT by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
He's one of Britain's most influential artists but now David Bowie stands accused of starting one of the nation's latest trends: The credit crunch.

As implausible as it seems, the Daily Mirror has today accused the pop legend of inspiring ‘securitisation', one of the key factors behind today's economic fallout.

Back in 1997 Bowie came up with the idea of selling his projected royalties income in the form of ‘Bowie Bonds'.

In other words, Bowie realised he would have a steady stream of money coming in from the sale of his music but rather than wait for it to accrue, he sold the rights to the future earnings so he could withdraw a large cash sum there and then. This became known as ‘securitisation'.

Towards the end of the 1990s, the banks began to adopt a similar model but on a much much larger scale.

But instead of selling royalties in the case of Bowie, they began to sell on mortgages that they had loaned to their customers.

The premise was that the buyer of the loans would have a guaranteed income from the interest on the repayments and the banks would take an upfront cash sum in return.

Banks were lending out huge bundles of loans in the guise of contracts, giving the buyer the rights to the future repayments on those loans.

The problems began when loans were given to people who were then unable to pay them back. This caused many of these contracts to be rendered worthless and a lot of this bad debt had to be written off, causing the financial system to lose billions of pounds.

Did Bowie cause the credit crunch? No. But inadvertently he set the paradigm.

Who can blame him though really? He's not evil he just used an approach that worked. Banks are financial institutions and are responsible for their own actions and assessing the long term risk. They would have but chose to ignore it possibly.

It is typical of a 'gutter' comic [I won't call it a paper]like the Mirror, to come up with this tripe; rather than blaming their commander in chief at No. 10

What a load of tosh, a load of people have made money in one form or another. I hold the banks responsible for chucking money at people when they realistically could not afford it all for profit, its called greed, greed, greed. Hopefully the banks will spend their Life On Mar's

Well, I think Bowie may have had a financial advisor or consultant for his form of 'securitisation'. I think, however, the whole idea of a 'product derived from a previous product' can't be right. On the other hand, it may have worked if people in the first place were able to pay back the original money. On the whole, I just think the idea of 'products' being bought and sold between banks and finance companies etc is out of kilter. Someone was obviously a little over-creative with the 'securitisation' or 'futures and trends' idea, or what ever you want to call it. Long live DB, and Bono:)

What absolute bull [profane]! Bowie may have had a greta idea that might work on a small scale for a musician, but if banks want to jump on the bandwagon (arf) thats their fault. And the idea that the banks would send the blame elsewhere.. anywhere as long as its away from them.. makes me sick. No and LO it is our greed raised society that firmly believes it deserves more for less that is to blame and we should ALL shoulder the responsibility. Our infected and diseased model of civilisation must be destroyed before a better style of living can be introduced. We're too far down the line to turn around. That is why our government's solution to this mess is to spend more, it knows nothing else. Humanity is on a course for its own destruction, it is over populating, overdrawing it's resources, offending it's neighbours with no-brain religions driven by false hopes and greed. Anybody who has half a clue about population dynamics can see it is going to crash soon. I only hope, for the sake of those who will perish, that it is quick. And to the survivors the immense task of rebuilding themselves will be borne. And if any of you who read this turn out to be a survivor, don't you DARE build it back to what it once was. The future of humanity depends on this crash, let evolution by natural selection kill the immoral financial hell we are in. Life is so un-natural now. And nature always wins!

I agree with Dru, the banks have been far too greedy in the past, in fact all the big companies, Oil, Gas, Electric, etc are big fat greedy b******s. I hate them!!!!!!!!!

An example:

I live on my own am aged 60 and don't use much gas. I am paying £20 a month for what I use and am in credit to the tune of £80

I recieved a letter the other day saying they are going to take £80 a month from now on.

Well, I'm not having it!!

I feel a bit better now lol

how stupid does that sound, are we now saying that he has been behind all the money that was encouraged to be borrowed by the banks and credit cards. Anybody with any sense could see the crash waiting to happen and those behind it were the the big banks taking thier cut regardless of the outcome. This is just the start things will only get worse whilst the people in power continue to lie and cheat thier way through big bonus and a attitude of I am alright JACK
