David Gray – Instrument of Torture

Posted Fri 4 Jul 2008 1:33PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Middle-of-the-road Mancunian miserablist David Gray has hit out at reports that his music has been used as an instrument of torture by US interrogators.

The singer-songwriter's hit single Babylon is said to be the preferred choice of the US military in Iraq who play the track incessantly to detainees during interrogation sessions.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them." said the singer taking on Radio Four's World Tonight programme.

Playing loud music repeatedly to detainees is thought to be a standard interrogation technique used by the US military.

If they really wanted to go to twon on their detainees, they should use stuff like Deathspell Omega, Hate Eternal, Haemoth and other delightful extreme metal acts...

I'd prefer waterboarding.

Nice to see you're all giving it predictable responses whilst missing a very serious point entirely...

awesome, maybe they wanna chuck in some Macy Grey or Culture Club.
Or possible go all out and have a perpectually looped tape of Reggie Wilson's Tango Treats. I'd give in and claim I was Ossama Bin Laden wityh that lot being blared at me 24/7!!!!

It makes no difference if music is used or not. Any form of torture is wrong and its about time it was stopped worldwide

Davis Grey is WELSH....... Reflects the standard of journalism and factual content if they can't even get that right!

I think Mr Gray should have kept his mouth shut and just let people have their fun. His idea of how good he is is obviously different to the rest of us. He should be happy with the money he's made and go quietly into nothingness if he's going to take jokes so seriously. Alternatively he should just laugh it off James Blunt style.

Well I think if I was handuffed with a bag over my head I think even David Grey might seem uplifting to complete silence. I think it's interesting to think they use music as torture....how ridiculous.

They should try Coldplay, should crack detainees in half the time...

the point is that people are being tortured - all forms of torture are wrong whatever music it involves - to be honest i was most shocked to hear that music is used. - it amazes me that people respond just to the surface of these issues and [profane] headline news about celebrities - this is nothing to do with david gray. on top of which - you can be rude about him all you like (although i agree) - but he's rich and successful and your comments won't touch him - please look at what is going on.

David Gray is a legend!! his music is brilliant and he sings and writes his own songs!! ...cos who wouldnt prefer "man-made" bands who get their songs wrote for them and their voices digitally altered so they sell records! ....obiviously David Gray would come before these so called bands in my opinion! As for this nonesense about it being used by the army ...any music could be played in this instance ..if you were put in a dark room and played a song over and over again for hours ..even if it were your favourite song it would annoy the hell out of you!!!

Davy Gray is a legend!!!

This not a news story. It's David Gray denouncing the US' interrogation methods - where does he comment on his own music?

(FWIW, I can't bear his monotonous whining.)
