David Gray – Instrument of Torture

Posted Fri 4 Jul 2008 1:33PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Middle-of-the-road Mancunian miserablist David Gray has hit out at reports that his music has been used as an instrument of torture by US interrogators.

The singer-songwriter's hit single Babylon is said to be the preferred choice of the US military in Iraq who play the track incessantly to detainees during interrogation sessions.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them." said the singer taking on Radio Four's World Tonight programme.

Playing loud music repeatedly to detainees is thought to be a standard interrogation technique used by the US military.

At least Babylon was the old name for Irak. How come US military could think by themselve?

Considering who the US target, I would have thought they would appreciate a song called Babylon.

The point is not whether or not you like David Gray's music - the point to remember is that the US, a so-called democratic, humane country which upholds Christian values is using torture as a method of intelligence-gathering. This is wrong and cannot be condoned by any civilised, caring and intelligentnt human being.

do u people have jobs...
i mean seriouly come on!!

Have to agree with the first comment, "What is the point of the article?". It's rubbish no detail and one quote. I guess any song could be torture if exposed to over prolonged periods of time in a dark room, I hate pretty much all Christmas songs from over exposure whilst working 7 years ago and that was only for 10 hours a day with at least 2 albums in rotation. Heaven knows what days of it would be like. Very sad that the US resorts to these torture tactics...

whats wrong with the tried and tested pulling out fingernails with pliers? The yanks should stop pussying around and get yhe job done!

It saddens me that the topic of torture is so casually disregarded that it is a joke for most of you that David Grays music is used as an instrument of degrading and inhumane treatment of fellow human beings. Your lack of compassion is frightening

very funny !!!!!!!

hahaha lmao

what about the problems this could cause David Grey, do you think any supporter of terrorism will be looking at this and thinking he must be a part of the torture of the prisoners? and the thought of taking him out would be a notch of thier belt, why cant they play contry and western to them, they would confess to anything even after an hour

I love how they've put a clip of the offending song on this article too- just in case we want to emulate the torture at home.

Am I the only one who thinks that the way people go on the offensive about music they don't happen to like is absurd? We all have likes and dislikes about stuff but with music its like there's some sort of sworn allegiance. Bonkers!

Pathetic really isn't it? How easily people are diverted from the underlying issue. The chance to have a pop at a celeb is apparently irresistable. The human race, as usual, being terribly dissapointing. Why celebrate your intellectual mediocrity - go and read something. . David Grays lyrics might be the ideal starting point. Bon chance with the rest of your lives..

whats the issue here, David Gray, or the torture, come on people. i know which one bothers me the most.

It's amazing reading some of the comments. The captured guys have no trial and undergo this stuff but people here seem to think it's ok. Imagine if you could be picked up on a whim and tortured in your own country.

Heard recently that a lot of the Guantanemo bay detainees were turned in by people who would receive a result the equivalent of €250k in their own country. Imagine the amount of innocent people that would be turned in for that amount of money in the US. Then torture next?

Whether you like Gray or not, he is clearly not happy at the way his music is being used. At least he has chosen to highlight the real issue rather than having a hissy fit about the 'joke' that his music is torture! These are political prisoners often from countries, with poor human rights records. How can Europe and America condemn them when the US military behave like this?

What's wrong with his neck?

98. Yahoo! Music User -
It could be a lot worse - like anything by Leona Lewis or McFly's version of The Boys Are Back In Town for instance.

99. Perry Neeham -
It worked in World War 2 when Vera Lynn tortured our own troops with Bluebirds over the Flippin' White Cliffs of Dover. That way her they got the thing over and done with in quick time so they did not have to listen to her any more.So why not David Grey? The really bad and hardened criminal should be forced to watch Torvil and Dean skate Ravel's Bolero.I take that back.Nobody regardless of the severity of the crime deserves that.

100. Max -
pointless article. if david gray is the worse we do to these people, they should think themselves lucky. come to the real world and pay tax. now thats inhumane :-)
