David Gray – Instrument of Torture

Posted Fri 4 Jul 2008 1:33PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Middle-of-the-road Mancunian miserablist David Gray has hit out at reports that his music has been used as an instrument of torture by US interrogators.

The singer-songwriter's hit single Babylon is said to be the preferred choice of the US military in Iraq who play the track incessantly to detainees during interrogation sessions.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them." said the singer taking on Radio Four's World Tonight programme.

Playing loud music repeatedly to detainees is thought to be a standard interrogation technique used by the US military.

Who's David Gray?

most of the people commenting on this article think this is funny, a nice little joke about how bad his music is. The US can arrest, imprison, torture and murder anyone it wants, from anywhere in the world, with no evidence, no trial, no appeal, no witnessess, and you idiots think all this is funny cos your sure they wont use those powers on you. The longer this kind of stuff goes unchallenged, the easier it gets to widen the net. Animal rights protestors perhaps? or Anti-war protestors? plenty of americans consider both groups "traitors" already.

I would love nothing more to live in a world where the sun is always shining, birds singing and everybody loving everyone but hey.... this is the real world. If TRAINED professionals did not do all they could to get the truth out of someone by using all means available... A LOT of inicent people would be killed every second of every day!. That would be like saying to your countries enemies "do what you want with us and if we catch you we will take you on holiday and be your servant for as long as you like..... i hope that we can be friends and i really don't mind if you carry on your acts of terorism" Hey least it's music and not white noise!

What is new. Atleast music is a bit better than waterboarding to simulate drawning.

If true, then I feel sorry for the alledged victims.
David Gray should wind his neck in and be grateful that he's left some sort of impression on the world, even if is being a nauseating, whining, self opinionated ………..…(fill in the dots with your preferred expression.

David Gray IS Mancunian. Born in Manchester, lived in Wales... moved to Ireland. Some classic comments but real issue is US torture.. wrong for the Nazi's but ok for the good old US of A...eh?

I agree with Vicky if you listen to anything even if its your favourite song to long it will become annoying!!!! David Grey is a respected artist who write's his OWN SONGS, not someone else's, and I think it's right that he stands up for what is his. And I agree as well that the rest is probably boyzone and backstreet boys fans. And why do they use music (language of the soul, our universal language) as a form of torture anyway??, I think complete silence can become worse!

this is a torture once u hear it more then twice.. the radio station at work played this song over and over again for few months. i did quit that job..

Nothing at all wrong with Mr Gray, I thought 'Babylon' was damned good. All these twats who say a certain artist or form of music is 'crap' just because it's not to their particular taste are arseholes!
(unless they're talking about rap music which is [profane]e!)
