David Gray – Instrument of Torture

Posted Fri 4 Jul 2008 1:33PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Middle-of-the-road Mancunian miserablist David Gray has hit out at reports that his music has been used as an instrument of torture by US interrogators.

The singer-songwriter's hit single Babylon is said to be the preferred choice of the US military in Iraq who play the track incessantly to detainees during interrogation sessions.

"What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them." said the singer taking on Radio Four's World Tonight programme.

Playing loud music repeatedly to detainees is thought to be a standard interrogation technique used by the US military.

I like his music. But if they want torture, use pyshical torture, the good old fanshioned way.

Does the US have a public broadcasting licence to do this? Otherwise, Mr. Grey should sue htem for breach of copyright. I quite like Babylon, although it is not my favourite track from White Ladder.

However, I could nominate many others as torture - the Birdy Song for a start would have me talking!

Are all of u that shallow?? The storey ain't about david grey's music, look a bit deeper, it's about how f'd up America is!!

I think his music is fabulous, so I am the odd one?

He is vastly better than some of the current rubbish which abuses our ears in restaurants, lifts, shops etc.

Listening to someone who cant enunciate a single word would do my head in and make me talk.

I think it's terrible that a supposedly free country like the United States subjects it's prisoners to torture. There is no excuse for this barbaric practice in the 21st century.

168. David -
It's sad that today any artist that writes music with a melody and played with instruments properly just gets ridiculed. I'm no big fan but I would rather listen to his stuff than hip hop, R+B, or any other un-melodic garbage!

I can't believe anyone could be so cruel.

Its a shame there are so many childish comments about David Grays music. Im a big fan and he's wright for making a stand.
If people really took the time to listen, i think thay would like it

I wouldn't wish that drossy sound-a-like guff on anyone, terrorist or not.

Very good/disturbing article by Clive Stafford Smith in New Statesman(09.06.08)on the Human Rights page, was all to do with music used by the U.S. for interrogation purposes and was entitled "Now That's What I Call Torture". Worth a read. (Worth something been done about it !)

this artist is like ,someone scratching glass with their finger nails!

176. john -
Yep i'd crack!

Any kind of music is torture if it doesn't happen to be your particular choice. I don't see that this piece is any worse than any other. Smart cracks aside, if this is American democracy, who wants it?

Like the guy, like his music or not some of the comments have been disgusting. Do some of you ever THINK before you write about (if) what totrture is happening to human beings whilst the music is playing? You should be ashamed of yourselves, you never know what's going happen in the future and it could be YOU in the torture chamber!

179. Steve -
very very funny....

you reckon the issue here is not HOW people are being tortured but the fact they ARE being tortured in the first place eh?
