Eurovison - This Year's Frontrunners

Posted Thu 14 May 2009 10:42AM BST by Hammy Symek in The Guestlist

As Eurovision fever builds we take a look at this year’s front runners ahead of Saturday night’s final in Moscow.

Norway: Alexander Rybak - Fairytale

Having already topped the charts in Norway, is Russian born vocalist and violinist Alexander Rybak destined for a "Fairytale" ending in Moscow?

Odds: 6/4

Greece: Sakis Rouvas - This Is Our Night

Greece last won the competition as recently as 2005 but can Sakis Rouvas take the trophy back to Athens with this slice of europop gold?

Odds: 6/1

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Regina - Bistra Voda

A somewhat sombre entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina who made their debut at the Contest in 1993 but have so far failed to win. Will 2009 be their year?

Odds: 9/1

Turkey: Hadise - Düm Tek Tek

Fusing r’n’b beats with some exotic eastern sounds, it’s easy to see why Turkey are highly rated this year.

Odds: 9/1

Iceland: Yohanna - Is It True

Don’t expect Norse inflected verses of fire and ice as Iceland’s entry sounds like it could be straight out of High School Musical, complete with polished smiles and sweeping key changes.

Odds: 14/1

United Kingdom: Jade - It's My Time

Having fared badly in the contest since 2003's Iraq war, the UK aim to break their cycle of 'bad luck' with Jade's Andrew Lloyd Webber penned track. A win in Moscow this year would take the UK's total up to six gongs.

Odds: 14/1

Azerbaijan: AySel & Arash - Always

The former Soviet State made their Eurovision debut last year so it may come as a surprise to some that they're amongst this year's front runners.

Odds: 16/1

Malta: Chiara - What If We

Now a veteran of the contest, this is Chiara's third Eurovision attempt. Will it be third time lucky this year?

Odds: 16/1

Armenia: Inga & Ansuh - Jan Jan

Our personal favourite in the Yahoo! Music office. It's an outside chance but we're bold enough to predict that Armenia will get a podium finish this year with their genre busting track "Jan Jan".

Odds: 33/1

Sweden: Malena Ernman - La Voix

We didn't really know what to make of Sweden's rather bizarre fusion of europop and opera sung by a rather striking looking Nordic belle but it's clearly worth a look in.

Odds: 66/1

64. olga -
It is not the Eastern Europe performance as all the candidates from all over the Europe have equal rights to participate, if Eastern Europe is getting better than Western, you can't blame them for that

65. Dave -
Iceland have the best song by a mile. No idea why Norway and Turkey are such high odds. The contest is never about looks and tends to more about politics and the songs.

My post number 47 has has a profane added WHY?? I used a word which would normally describe a cigarette packet beginning with f. So piccy piccy piccy nah nah. Prats

Hey I am not fanatic on the Eurovision but the comment you have on Malta is wrong. This is the third time for Chiara but it is not true that this is the first time she reached the final. In fact she was third and second respectively in the two previous times that she participated.

Its a shame i think the UK song is very strong and its capable of winning but because of all this political(vote for your neighbours)rubbish i simply think the UK are wasting there time shame really!

69. anastasija -
Well i vote for Lithuania. not only because he has a great voice and is very talented, but also because unlike any other contestant in this years eurovision, he is the only one sining a song he wrote himself, both lyrics and music. and another fact you didn't know he lived in London for 8 years after being abandoned here by his dad... fact.

71. altin -

72. Yahoo! Music User -
Norway, Lithuanian songs are so nice!

73. David -
What a dreadful song from Ireland this year - given that they have won it quite a few times! Awful!! I don't think Royaume Uni will get nil points this year - Ireland might! Equally, I don't think WE will win, but might come in the top 5. Greece have a very strong entry, Spain is also good (oh, did they get through?) also, Denmark but my bet goes on Greece.

ITS MALTA ALL THE WAY, BUT WAIT A MINUTE IS THAT BLOKE FROM NORWAY REALY A RUSSIAN, GUESS WHOS GOING TO WIN GUYS, AND IT WONT BE THAT UGLY GUYS SONG FROM THE UK BORING BORING BORING

75. Jeff -
If someone like Terry Wogan made the Euro contest worth watching, then she must be a reall sick person. The contest is garbage and Wogan was dire, like most British tv personalities a man of little talent.

76. chalky white -
all rubish

77. Yahoo! Music User -
Estonia is a very catchy song but maybe you need to hear it afew times to really enjoy it.
I love Eurovision & have been following it for over 40 years & it evolves every year.
This year there are some very high quality songs e.g. Norway Estonia & UK
It will be a great competition this year

I think Jade is Great n has the potential to win! But hey its euro vision! The best never wins! Political piece of ****

79. Yahoo! Music User -
Please everyone - the voting rules have changed this year, so we should not get neighbourly votes and all the Baltics voting for each other. 50% votes are from Joe Public and the remainder by "professionals" - interesting to see how it goes.

what it the point of it anyway!!! most of them sing in English...shouldn't they sing in their own language as they are suppose to represent their country?!?!?!?!
