Eurovison - This Year's Frontrunners

Posted Thu 14 May 2009 10:42AM BST by Hammy Symek in The Guestlist

As Eurovision fever builds we take a look at this year’s front runners ahead of Saturday night’s final in Moscow.

Norway: Alexander Rybak - Fairytale

Having already topped the charts in Norway, is Russian born vocalist and violinist Alexander Rybak destined for a "Fairytale" ending in Moscow?

Odds: 6/4

Greece: Sakis Rouvas - This Is Our Night

Greece last won the competition as recently as 2005 but can Sakis Rouvas take the trophy back to Athens with this slice of europop gold?

Odds: 6/1

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Regina - Bistra Voda

A somewhat sombre entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina who made their debut at the Contest in 1993 but have so far failed to win. Will 2009 be their year?

Odds: 9/1

Turkey: Hadise - Düm Tek Tek

Fusing r’n’b beats with some exotic eastern sounds, it’s easy to see why Turkey are highly rated this year.

Odds: 9/1

Iceland: Yohanna - Is It True

Don’t expect Norse inflected verses of fire and ice as Iceland’s entry sounds like it could be straight out of High School Musical, complete with polished smiles and sweeping key changes.

Odds: 14/1

United Kingdom: Jade - It's My Time

Having fared badly in the contest since 2003's Iraq war, the UK aim to break their cycle of 'bad luck' with Jade's Andrew Lloyd Webber penned track. A win in Moscow this year would take the UK's total up to six gongs.

Odds: 14/1

Azerbaijan: AySel & Arash - Always

The former Soviet State made their Eurovision debut last year so it may come as a surprise to some that they're amongst this year's front runners.

Odds: 16/1

Malta: Chiara - What If We

Now a veteran of the contest, this is Chiara's third Eurovision attempt. Will it be third time lucky this year?

Odds: 16/1

Armenia: Inga & Ansuh - Jan Jan

Our personal favourite in the Yahoo! Music office. It's an outside chance but we're bold enough to predict that Armenia will get a podium finish this year with their genre busting track "Jan Jan".

Odds: 33/1

Sweden: Malena Ernman - La Voix

We didn't really know what to make of Sweden's rather bizarre fusion of europop and opera sung by a rather striking looking Nordic belle but it's clearly worth a look in.

Odds: 66/1

Surely the whole thing about the Eurovision song contest is that it is about rubbish songs by rubbish singers? The U.K's 1970s entries plumbed new depths with 'Save Your Kisses for Me' and similar cr*p, opening up a whole new concept. The whole idea since then has been to enter the most diabolical song and lots of countries have already cottoned on to this. The U.K. therefore 'won' in 2004 (?) with it's 'nil points' booby......the worst song amongst all the other rubbish.

i really liked lithuania its a really nice song!

in response to post number 77, Spain are automatically in the final along with Germany, France, and the United Kingdom as they contribute the most financially. Russia join them as last years winners.

I think the eurovision is a complete waist of time since they got in the public vote, all the eastern european countries are voting for each other every year without fail, look at some of the acxts that went through compared to ireland, there was no match ireland were completely better,it should be called easteurovision from now on

105. Yahoo! Music User -
Lets not be to hasty for the rid of Eurovision, after all it did find ABBA.

Azerbaijan for me with Norway runner up.

106. michelle -

the UK will win

107. geordie tree -
Isnt it amazing how most songs are sung in English. I bet the French are ecstatic about that

108. Jean E -
eurovision song is now political its rubbish we will never win this contest as long as we enter, Terry Wogan had the sense to boycott it I haven't watched it for years only when they give the results.

109. GILLIAN -
Absolute Rubbish

110. Paul W -
Ireland didn't make the final year which is a shame, it was a much better attempt than the last two years (Dustin the Turkey and Dervish). By far the worst were the Czechs from SF1 and last night the Dutch who looked like actors in a porn movie gone horribly wrong.

111. Paul W -
@112 Jean E do it the other way round, watch the show and ignore the result - its a great 2 hours of entertainment.

112. -
what happened to Ireland.

Thank you Terry for years of enjoyable comments on this political 'farce'

113. John -
Voting is 50% public 50% Countries now so we'll see if the politics come into it again!

118. megpie -
Good Luck Chiara, Malta is behind you. Good luck to all the contestants, i bet they all worked hard. Its a pity that every country votes for its neighbours and not the song.

119. Ian B -
For God's sake... pull the UK out and save us the emabarrasement.

120. Yahoo! Music User -
Have to agree about the Dutch entry - it was embarrassing
but the Irish entry was also poor & I believe all the best songs were chosen for the final apart from SERBIA which was great
I think this entry could develop a cult following - I love it
My prediction to win is Estonia - very haunting tune sung & played with perfection
