Eurovison - This Year's Frontrunners

Posted Thu 14 May 2009 10:42AM BST by Hammy Symek in The Guestlist

As Eurovision fever builds we take a look at this year’s front runners ahead of Saturday night’s final in Moscow.

Norway: Alexander Rybak - Fairytale

Having already topped the charts in Norway, is Russian born vocalist and violinist Alexander Rybak destined for a "Fairytale" ending in Moscow?

Odds: 6/4

Greece: Sakis Rouvas - This Is Our Night

Greece last won the competition as recently as 2005 but can Sakis Rouvas take the trophy back to Athens with this slice of europop gold?

Odds: 6/1

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Regina - Bistra Voda

A somewhat sombre entry from Bosnia and Herzegovina who made their debut at the Contest in 1993 but have so far failed to win. Will 2009 be their year?

Odds: 9/1

Turkey: Hadise - Düm Tek Tek

Fusing r’n’b beats with some exotic eastern sounds, it’s easy to see why Turkey are highly rated this year.

Odds: 9/1

Iceland: Yohanna - Is It True

Don’t expect Norse inflected verses of fire and ice as Iceland’s entry sounds like it could be straight out of High School Musical, complete with polished smiles and sweeping key changes.

Odds: 14/1

United Kingdom: Jade - It's My Time

Having fared badly in the contest since 2003's Iraq war, the UK aim to break their cycle of 'bad luck' with Jade's Andrew Lloyd Webber penned track. A win in Moscow this year would take the UK's total up to six gongs.

Odds: 14/1

Azerbaijan: AySel & Arash - Always

The former Soviet State made their Eurovision debut last year so it may come as a surprise to some that they're amongst this year's front runners.

Odds: 16/1

Malta: Chiara - What If We

Now a veteran of the contest, this is Chiara's third Eurovision attempt. Will it be third time lucky this year?

Odds: 16/1

Armenia: Inga & Ansuh - Jan Jan

Our personal favourite in the Yahoo! Music office. It's an outside chance but we're bold enough to predict that Armenia will get a podium finish this year with their genre busting track "Jan Jan".

Odds: 33/1

Sweden: Malena Ernman - La Voix

We didn't really know what to make of Sweden's rather bizarre fusion of europop and opera sung by a rather striking looking Nordic belle but it's clearly worth a look in.

Odds: 66/1

Shani's comment "It is no longer about a fun and healthy competition between countries in Europe, it is now all to do with politics. Even if England or Ireland or Spain or France shone way above everyone else, we all know it's not these guys that'll win."

Think if you check 'England' aren't in it this year!

Now would you like another try on which country you meant?

143. scutterbag -
Personally I think this competion is a farce, it's all political now, a case of you scratch my back & so on, England will never win, even Ireland were against us at the start of the farsical years. Let's face it we are only kept in because they want our money, without it they are nothing. I say we should pull out on principal, stop giving away our money & let them get on with it, they can't play fair so they don't deserve us. Terry Wogan & his comments were the only thing worth watching it for anyway.

I hate to love it.... funny how some people hate the UK but sponge off us.

145. Lina -
Lithuanian song nice

146. william w -
WHY BOTHER THE WEST CANNOT BEAT THE EAST EVER AND THATS A VOTING CERT THE ANSWER IS TWO COMPETITIONS ONE FOR THE EAST AND ONE FOR THE WEST UNFORTUNATELY THIS IS ONLY PRATICAL WAY

147. Yahoo! Music User -
The UK wont win. The song is RUBBISH!! No wonder we never win. When the song was being selected for the Eurovison last year and this year there were far better ones. I think a NUL point is comming.

148. PETER -
The voice totally wasted on this song. Has no chance whatsover of winning.

149. Tom -
Is swedens entry another rather hot man/woman?

150. John -
And furthermore still, I hate the Norwegian song but all credit to Norway for boxing clever - picking none other than a RUSSIAN
performer. A sure fire recipe that. And they did it when Ireland was flavour of the competition in the early to mid nineties too - remember their 1995 win thanks to a haunting violin solo - that was Fionnuala Sherry from ??? Full marks , you've guessed it .....IRELAND !
There is only one thing that can be salvaged from this years unprecedented fiasco and that is a win for Malta with Bosnia, Estonia and Lithuania figuring in the top four also.
Otherwise, Eurovision is a joke,ha ha. It has been for ages now.

151. John -
i am sorry to write this but in eastern europe where i have travelled extensively they are very very racist . one has no chance of winning unless regardless of the song our singer and all the backing singers are caucasian. very sad but true.

152. Chris -
same old same old songs maybe greece or finland will win this year

153. ivor b -
pick an ex eastern block country now out of a hat, give them the winners prize and give us a couple of good films on the tv instead

154. Yahoo! Music User -
oh dear Lord.

155. Myra -
I like turkeys i don't think we will get any where..

156. Evelyn -
i think the song with the title fair tale really made a big move the lyrics are simple but moving words.good for the new 20thies of this dacade.the artist was absolute gourgeous

157. Thomas M -
Irish man here, feeling really angry and disappointed today.

Is their really any need to explain why I feel this way?

I really believe Ireland should never enter this competition again, not because the song was bad, (it was the best Irish Eurovision song in recent times) it’s because only neighbouring countries are going to vote for a certain song. And all we have is the UK, so no more Eurovision final for us! :-(

158. griffo the bear -
Sweden's This year

159. Werff -
The Netherlands really should have been one of the ten winners of the second semi-final, their act was bigger and nicer, and vocal much better than some other East-European songs...
But it's not only that, Norway and Denmark do the same thing, but what do you do about it?

160. michael a -
The Eurovision is a joke of Eastern European states voting for each other . No OFFENCE but what ever come out of these countries in the Rock and Pop world of music . It makes me cringe to hear these countries . They should ban it or have 2 separate competitions , I would back "Borat" if he entered the competation , I am sure he better than most there any way :))
