iPods half full of illegal tracks
Research conducted by the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered that 48% of the music stored on the average digital music player has been downloaded illegally. The figure rises to almost 80% amongst teenagers. The extent of illegal downloading by one of the largest survey of youth music ownership has shocked the industry, which is struggling to cope with declining CD sales.
Former Undertones front man Fergal Sharkey and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights said "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected." His comments certainly seem to reflect a growing trend, as CD sales declined by 10% in 2007.
The study also shows:
63% of people illegally download
Just 15% of respondents are persuaded not to upload because of the risk of getting caught
95% engage in some form of copying
Have you ever downloaded a track to your ipod illegally and if so how much of your music collection does it account for?

The price of a cd is a complete rip off compared to other countries.
It's nothing to do with so called "artists" getting ripped off and losing out. It's all about lining the music industries corporate pockets.
It's hardly breaking the law is it? it's something that most people do and will never be stopped.
CDs are actually cheaper than they were ten years ago, where in the likes of HMV you would be paying £15 for an album. The new Coldplay album was £7 in Asda. That's less than a pound a song.
Stop making excuses, you penny-pinching LOSER. You're here on a MUSIC site yet you're too cheap and nasty to actually put your hand in your pocket and pay for the music you like?
People like you make me SICK. You should be ashamed of yourself. Scum.
that stop the thieving chavs
as for me stealing music..............NO COMMENT!
I download illigally also and I won't stop. Why buy it when its available for free. Maybe if songs where 30-50p online then I might start buying them. Buying them online makes the industry so much money, all they have to do is upload one song and away they go, no production costs, or distribution costs.
I still buy the odd cd but I mainly download them.
Is that illegal? One would say they are simply "sharing" thier music. Performing a transfer of data, in real life.
Why then, is it SO bad to transfer data online? Using p2p networks to download and upload music is just SHARING, that is all.
The thing is, it's happening on a huge scale, and the greedy people at the top see they're losing some money from this new age of sharing information. So naturally they will try to stop it.
Does that mean they are RIGHT? No. Times are changing, they need to adapt, not us.
Sharing is caring!
It's like magic.... and we are not all broke at the end of the month like we used to be from going out buying CD's and DVD's
Say, if you were not going to BUY the music, ever, then the company are not losing out on anything.
The band have not lost any stock nor any money.
If you steal a car, the company have lost stock, and money, as someone else may have payed for the car. Music is different.
I am not saying downloading music without paying is OK, I am just saying is not as bad as stealing an object from a shop.
it doesnt have to be downloaded ...
So if it is illegal what I have, it's the fault of the law firm that tested my host, not my fault.
