iPods half full of illegal tracks
Research conducted by the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered that 48% of the music stored on the average digital music player has been downloaded illegally. The figure rises to almost 80% amongst teenagers. The extent of illegal downloading by one of the largest survey of youth music ownership has shocked the industry, which is struggling to cope with declining CD sales.
Former Undertones front man Fergal Sharkey and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights said "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected." His comments certainly seem to reflect a growing trend, as CD sales declined by 10% in 2007.
The study also shows:
63% of people illegally download
Just 15% of respondents are persuaded not to upload because of the risk of getting caught
95% engage in some form of copying
Have you ever downloaded a track to your ipod illegally and if so how much of your music collection does it account for?

when I see artists buying million dollar cars even when 90% download the tracks free for me they're not broke, this is a joke when you say cd sales went down by 10% you just prove to us how greedy the industry is so the artists aren't happy with million dollar cars now? they want the billion dollar ones?
most artists get their funds from advertising, tv shows, festivals, cd sales means nothing to them in my opinion, I generaly like 1 or two songs out of the whole album so I don't like having to pay 10 pounds for just those and songs keep coming out too quickly so my money won't keep up with it.
again its not us to blame it's limewire, wiamp as they provide the service and I thank them for that but if you stop them nobody will admire your artists anymore because they won't pay for ripp'offs anyway
Or was that stolen too...
That isnt illegal and the ability to copy cd's was stopped but was deemed unlawfull quite a few years ago.
Im a law student and as far as i can see there is no difference in sharing music files across the internet. You really cant get convicted unless you have other digital content such as software and many films.
but lets face it its there and will be used and in our present economic situation the powers that be are running most people financially ionto the ground and so we will look for ways to enjoy our pitifull exsistances the best way we can!
I disagree with the high prices of music, or at least, the fact that the companies earn too much from it. That said, it's no excuse for blatant theft. I am guilty of having done it in the past to decide if I want it, however, if I like the song, I go and buy the whole album.
Go for it, judge me...
how many songs i have on my iPod in total = 1022
My iPod's being delivered and so I'll transfer what I already have that's downloaded illegally to it but I'll probably buy most new stuff if it's cheap. I think it's about balancing it out but I think people are overreacting a bit. People always burn each other's CDs and stuff...
What about trying to questin Windows. Just insert a cd and it is automatically ripped. Then how are you going to stop this so-called-piracy when even it is automatically done by pcs.
And are some of you "angels" honestly telling me you've never borrowed your mates DVD's and watched them gratis. Same thing so get a grip!! Unless of course your guilty conscience makes you donate £3 to charity. Yeah Right!
