iPods half full of illegal tracks

Posted Mon 16 Jun 2008 3:53PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Research conducted by the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered that 48% of the music stored on the average digital music player has been downloaded illegally. The figure rises to almost 80% amongst teenagers. The extent of illegal downloading by one of the largest survey of youth music ownership has shocked the industry, which is struggling to cope with declining CD sales.

Former Undertones front man Fergal Sharkey and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights said "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected." His comments certainly seem to reflect a growing trend, as CD sales declined by 10% in 2007.

The study also shows:

63% of people illegally download

Just 15% of respondents are persuaded not to upload because of the risk of getting caught

95% engage in some form of copying

Have you ever downloaded a track to your ipod illegally and if so how much of your music collection does it account for?

I have never paid for a song and never will

what if you only like 1 song out of the whole album??? should i buy a cd that will only get a few listens or just download it for frfee via p2p??? a lot of people do it, like another person said, p2p is just file sharing, no big difference between that and sharing your cd's with friends

I never paid for any music cd and will never pay,I only pay for the ones I like to keep as memory because either they're very special and worth more money in the future or I am a very big fan to support them.

when I see artists buying million dollar cars even when 90% download the tracks free for me they're not broke, this is a joke when you say cd sales went down by 10% you just prove to us how greedy the industry is so the artists aren't happy with million dollar cars now? they want the billion dollar ones?

most artists get their funds from advertising, tv shows, festivals, cd sales means nothing to them in my opinion, I generaly like 1 or two songs out of the whole album so I don't like having to pay 10 pounds for just those and songs keep coming out too quickly so my money won't keep up with it.

again its not us to blame it's limewire, wiamp as they provide the service and I thank them for that but if you stop them nobody will admire your artists anymore because they won't pay for ripp'offs anyway

If you cant afford to pay for a single song or album how on earth did you get enough money together to pay for a mp3 player?
Or was that stolen too...

If i dont sownload the music i just get a copy of a friends cd.
That isnt illegal and the ability to copy cd's was stopped but was deemed unlawfull quite a few years ago.
Im a law student and as far as i can see there is no difference in sharing music files across the internet. You really cant get convicted unless you have other digital content such as software and many films.

i have downloaded some music and i can guess it can be addictive enough but i have a very extensive music collection i usually own the albums i want but some really rare stuffi can only download or buy secondhand, if i buy secondhand the makers dont profit anyway!im not greedy and ususal;ly buy the stuff i want either before or after i download it i also swap albums within my family we all do and will end up buying what we want as a kinda try before u buy as many are right on here u dont always like the whole album!
but lets face it its there and will be used and in our present economic situation the powers that be are running most people financially ionto the ground and so we will look for ways to enjoy our pitifull exsistances the best way we can!

i think singles should be free to download. Usually if you like something you go buy the cd album anyway

I refer you all to a comment made by Bob Dylan on the same matter... "“Well, why not? It ain’t worth nothing anyway.”

I disagree with the high prices of music, or at least, the fact that the companies earn too much from it. That said, it's no excuse for blatant theft. I am guilty of having done it in the past to decide if I want it, however, if I like the song, I go and buy the whole album.

Go for it, judge me...

Tbh, for all the people that say it's the bands losing out, it's not. Maybe a bit, but not in the way you're making it out to be. It's the record labels who're losing out. And really, who cares? They've had massive profit margins for years, it was gonna change at some point or another.

WHAT DO YOU CALL WHAT THE GOVERNMENT IS DOING; TAXING MY INCOME THEN TAXING ME AGAIN EVERYTIME I BUY SOMETHING??? LEGAL??!! GUESS NOT. SO I WILL STAY WITH LIMEWIRE. MAY NOT BE DIVINE JUSTICE, BUT IS JUSTICE NONTHELESS

been stealing from kids for 50 years its payback time,my first CD in 85 cost £15 and i remember movies where a £100 on vhs the goose is now dead no more golden eggs the corparate lawyers are now trying to destroy whats left

I do download illegally but I do feel very guilty. I am a massive fan of the artists' music I download and CDs are a real rip off these days and just not worth it. I pay for things like concert tickets and stuff so the really big artists people support shouldn't be that worried because they're making loads of money anyway.

My iPod's being delivered and so I'll transfer what I already have that's downloaded illegally to it but I'll probably buy most new stuff if it's cheap. I think it's about balancing it out but I think people are overreacting a bit. People always burn each other's CDs and stuff...

I have a Philips gogear 4gb and all the tracks and albums on it are legal, all that i have brought on cd and then imported onto my mp3 player, I still like the fact of having cds being the fact that if my mp3 gets lost or stolen then i still have the music. All its nice knowing that im not illegaly copyrighting music, And to be fair the artists make the music and i feel it right to go out and buy it, The point is that everything is to do with money and if everyones illegaly downloading that has an impact on the indestry as a hole and thats why personaly i would never do it. Ive been buying cds for the past 17years and why should i stop now even though i have an mp3 player? I just think that the people are being greedy expecting something for free and what they fail to understand is that nothing in this world is free! Everyone should stop being lazy and get off there buts and BUY the music which is why it was made in the first place.

why place all the blame on us?
What about trying to questin Windows. Just insert a cd and it is automatically ripped. Then how are you going to stop this so-called-piracy when even it is automatically done by pcs.

omg! seriously this is stupid. Something to whine about.

With inflation, unfair prices on such products as CDs and Gift vouchers, and fat cats profiting on all the promotions and all sorts, why the HELL should we the little people dig our pockets even deeper for just music?? bullocks to that! The public is tired of being Ripped off!!

98. chris -
bet even singer download songs without paying

99. Laura -
Okay I do have illegally downloaded songs on my iPod but like Im not going to be paying good money when I can get it for free!

100. kooldood -
Everyone downloads illegally. I might "like" a song but not "love it" so I ain't paying £3 for a CD single or even 79p. The artist ain't losing money because I would never have bought it in the first place.

And are some of you "angels" honestly telling me you've never borrowed your mates DVD's and watched them gratis. Same thing so get a grip!! Unless of course your guilty conscience makes you donate £3 to charity. Yeah Right!
