iPods half full of illegal tracks

Posted Mon 16 Jun 2008 3:53PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Research conducted by the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered that 48% of the music stored on the average digital music player has been downloaded illegally. The figure rises to almost 80% amongst teenagers. The extent of illegal downloading by one of the largest survey of youth music ownership has shocked the industry, which is struggling to cope with declining CD sales.

Former Undertones front man Fergal Sharkey and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights said "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected." His comments certainly seem to reflect a growing trend, as CD sales declined by 10% in 2007.

The study also shows:

63% of people illegally download

Just 15% of respondents are persuaded not to upload because of the risk of getting caught

95% engage in some form of copying

Have you ever downloaded a track to your ipod illegally and if so how much of your music collection does it account for?

How come all these people are complaining about the cost of music but they seem to be able to afford the MP3 players,PCs, probably broadband subs, etc etc. If you can afford the kit then you know you need to afford the tunes. dont buy expensive gear if you cant afford to use it.

Im too young to be able to get a job and buy all the music i want and some of the music you just can't find anywhere else, like the random stuff. Also it conventant you dont have to go out the house or get all teh cards out to pay for it.

what people need to remember the big record compnies do not own the rights to all the music that is out thereon the net or in peoples houses.if you have paid for a record,cd or any other media it is yours so you should be able to do what you want with it.also remember if anything happened to your ipod/mp3 player the record companies are not going to say "since you have paid for all your tunes we will replace them free.".i have been buying record since late 70's and still do buy tunes, but i do get music from friends aswell.alot of artist get ripped off by the record companies and distributers.my dad has some old music that i know emi/virgin/time warner etc do not own the rights to so why should they dictate what we can share.they should only be able to dictate the music they own outright.

i have to admit i do its because i cant afoord 70-90p a song evreyone dose it theres no point in wasting £1 when its free and about artist losing money what about us losing money? i think songs for ipod should be 10-30p then people would stop

Choice. 7000 and all available from a subscription service and private collection. I chose to choose whether getting it free is actually free, or paying for it.

So subscription won out. The investors, who do the recording, video shoot, advertising and distribution of an artist get paid. The artist gets paid for the intellectual works.

Stealing anything in the arts, stealing anything from an artist, is theft.

Even if it is borrowed, or to just listen a little bit. It lacks honesty, integrity to be able afford something lawfully, cheating someone behind their backs...means we can say, dirty little thief, dirty little beggar, dirty little liar, keep your hands in your pockets. Stay away from me.

To lame it, well it was there on a site is inexcusable, if it is published and a price is put on it elsewhere, guaranteed! the artist was expecting to get paid for their work.

Someone steals from you, I'll lay odds on, knowing what you would do to a thief who gets caught.

The average person can't afford to buy all their music on itunes or in a shop as living costs are just too much nowadays.

OK If you think about it this way...an 80 gig Ipod costs 250euros!!! This is hard enough for teenagers to come up with, but it seems theres no point in having an Ipod if your not absolutlely LOADED!!! I mean seriously, judging from my case...most of my friends have between 3000 to 6000 songs on their Ipods!!! A song on Itunes costs 1euro!!! Why should we have to pay up to 6THOUSAND euros to enjoy an art form!!! This is getting ridiculusly out of hand!!! Either drop the prices dramatically ( im talkin maybe to 5 cents or so), or just lose out completely!!! Itsin your Field!!!

So what if you do it, if the album is any good you will end up buying anyway. I can't see these music types begging for change. Poor guys only earned serveral million pounds boo hoo my heart bleeds. Lets start worrying about more important things like pedos downloading child porn. ETC

why the hell do they put their music on the internet. if they don't want music to be downloaded illegally, they should not put it on the internet at all. am not saying i download any music illegally...don't get me wrong...

the only answer is to force the hardware compies to pay up a percentage, ie the companies that make the devices that music is now played on. so Apple. dell, sony ect would all have to pay a large chunk in order to be alowed to sell products that can play mp3's. its an old argument but the only answer in my mind.

Whilst I don't condone downloading of music tracks I am not surprised by the findings of this survey.
For many years the music loving public have had no choice than to pay the exhorbitant prices impossed by the large record companies, to create large profits for their shareholders, pay their executives excessive salaries and fund the so called artists extravagant lifestyles.
Maybe it is time they all took a pay-cut and started providing value for money, then common people may be more inclined to pay to download music.
I am afraid that the world appears to have gone 'celebrity mad', but what do these 'celebrities' do to further mankind?

lolll... all teenagers download illegal songs. We just use limewire and type in what song we want, and it downloads in seconds...why the hell would we want to pay? It doesnt affect anyone when we download songs. Worry about more important things like poverty in Africa or terrorism.

Why sould I have to pay to get a digital copy of something I bought and own on vinyl or on a disc that got damaged? Surely I've already paid my artists rights fees????

135. Yahoo! Music User -
I use Limewire Pro. I have to pay to get limewire pro surely that covers me downloading songs. It's only £10.99. I find that cheaper than having to pay 79p per song on Itunes. Now am I downloading illegally because the number I download cost way more than the actual price I pay for the download server

mmmmm...... im confused!!! if we xan't download then how can we store songs???

I am 41 so most music on my ipod has come from my record collection i have no downloaded tunes, i have a few cds that i have got off other people who copied them for me, just like we did in the old days with the tape, this to me is the same thing as shareware, so those who are without sin, throw the first stone, if you have one copied tape, cd, dvd or video, or bought cheap(anything) from a bloke down the pub, you are the same as the rest of us, so put that stone back down. Anyway, bo77ocks to them, they all have far too much money, plus they are having to get off thier fat coke ridded bums and having to perform to make a living, just like the rest of us.

If I cant afford a car, I need to walk. If I cant afford a CD, I need to make do with what I already own.

Music should be free to anyone that wants it.If someone makes an album they do it because music is what they want to do. Anyone can steal music just like movies or cars, just because people like music doesnt mean they should pay for it. Music is for ears and souls and hearts for anyone to dive into and relax. Not for the likes of Flo-rida or leona lewis to get some pocket money for the weekend.

MUSIC IS FOR EVERYONE!!! DOESNT MEAN WE SHOULD PAY FOR IT NO ONE MISSES OUT!!!

If I see a band live and pay for gig tickets I am givin them money and buy a t-shirt even more money so why the hell should I pay for their cd when I can just download it they get about £10 gig ticket and another £15 for a t-shirt thats £25 so im not gonna go buy their cds when i can get ti for free
