iPods half full of illegal tracks

Posted Mon 16 Jun 2008 3:53PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Research conducted by the University of Hertfordshire has uncovered that 48% of the music stored on the average digital music player has been downloaded illegally. The figure rises to almost 80% amongst teenagers. The extent of illegal downloading by one of the largest survey of youth music ownership has shocked the industry, which is struggling to cope with declining CD sales.

Former Undertones front man Fergal Sharkey and now Chief Executive of British Music Rights said "I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected." His comments certainly seem to reflect a growing trend, as CD sales declined by 10% in 2007.

The study also shows:

63% of people illegally download

Just 15% of respondents are persuaded not to upload because of the risk of getting caught

95% engage in some form of copying

Have you ever downloaded a track to your ipod illegally and if so how much of your music collection does it account for?

Well I get cds from my friends for free! And I think all this is good for music! Bands won't get enough money from their cds so they'll have to come out and play more gigs and then the performers who actually can play well will profit! That can only be good! So roll on illegal downloading to bring music back to where it belongs: On stage!

yeah i have downloaded and not payed for them because its dear otherwise.

When you add up all the songs you would like.

Its too easy to steal music, thats why people do it. If it was as easy to steal car, i'm sure people would do it. howeve people who do download music ilegally should be willing to pay the consequences, as it is not fair on the people who do pay, and also unfair to the producers of that music. However why should people stop doing it when its so easy to do it?

I do pay tyo download using the Itunes music store. I mean come on why do you need to download illegally when, by paying for it on Itunes, It doesnt rip off the artist (as a musician It annoys me) and secondly its only 79p per track - even the poorest of families surely can spare 79p and download a track?

tell us something we dont know.
i havent bought a cd in years

Hang on!

I'm one of these "greedy" artists people are stealing from.....I certainly don't have a car, a big house or any riches. So when my music is stolen, as opposed to paid for, where does that leave me? That's not a greedy statement, that's just common sense. Nobody works for no money...everyone has bills to pay and needs to survive.

Not all musicians are Madonna, you know. Nobody on here has even considered what independent record labels are supposed to do when they barely recoup their investment in the first place. So please, don't make out you're some kind of revolutionary rising against system by stealing music, because it only goes to show just how ignorant you are on the subject.

OK fair enough the price of CD has come down but the price of concert tickets has shot through the roof!

The music industry isn't going to lose out over it. There will always find a way to rip us off!

Quote from Fergal Sharkey below.

"I was one of those people who went around the back of the bike shed with songs I had taped off the radio the night before. But this totally dwarfs that, and anything we expected"

This can still be done and to a much better standard with DAB radio, so lets ban radio stations that play music because they are a risk to someone's profit. While we're at it, let’s ban TV too. With today's HD TV it's easy to make a copy of a film and share these with friends, so let’s ban TV too.

Then there is the music library, where you can borrow CD’s from your library but of coarse you can’t copy these, NOT

Then there are your local DJ’s that run their own roadshows, how many of these do you think actually pay their dues?

The list is endless but take note that the recording industry seem to be going for the softest targets, the consumer, the one equation that doesn’t have endless pots of money to defend themselves.

Shame on you, get a life.

well i agree with it stopping chavs stealing but for once in life chavs are lke everyone else.lots of teenage kids like me cant afford to pay for all the music i have on my/their ipods. so i really dont see why it is against the law . i have over 600 songs in my ipod so 600 * 79 p. i cant afford that. thats almost £320. i mean i can afford like £150 a year of music but ive had this ipd for 15 months so....
as somebody ontop of me said no body is losing anything. so i think they should get rid of that stupid law and even so. too may people do it so its out of hand now. no one can stop it.

You may think the only danger you'll face when downloading music illegally is jail time or a huge fine due to copyright laws should you be caught, but there are other things you should be aware of.

The Dangers of Illegal Downloads
Remember if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. There are a lot of sites online spouting promises of free music files from some huge artists, don't be fooled, the golden rule stands, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably has a catch.

Remember once you download a file onto your computer, there's no telling what it might be up to, you need to be careful, not only of the law, but also that you are cautious of any of these 'great deals' on free music. Illegal downloading and file sharing can leave you open to security breaches, viruses and other net-borne nasties - there's also the massive fines and jail time to consider.

Illegal music downloading actually harms you as a consumer. Many people may try and justify their flagrant illegal internet use as the little guy fighting the huge corporate bodies, but in actual fact it is not only the countless artists, musicians, writers, engineers and others in the music business that suffer harm, but also you the consumer.

Next time you think about illegally downloading music on the internet, give a few things a thought first. If you had worked hard on something, would you want it disseminated for no payment via the internet? Illegally downloading music may not have any physicality to it, such as shoplifting, but it equates to the same thing -stealing and stealing is a crime in the eyes of the law.

Task forces are being set up in various countries to deal with illegal music downloading, don't let yourself be a victim, know you're on the right side of the law and use reputable digital downloading services.

As long as it free people will do it. We have so many laws we break every day that we never realise we do. Did you know:

Its illeagal to recorde movies from the tv?
Its illeagal to sell a book you have read?
Its illeagal to record music off the radio?

Well as far as im aware its all true, the book thin got me thinking but its true.... something to do with writers rights... but you see secondhand book shops everyware.

Downloading and me have an interesting relationship. I'll download a couple of songs, decide whether or not I like them, then buy the CD.

I have about 600 songs on my ipod, and only about 10 are illegal at the moment.

i listen to my music on my computer simply because my CD player is downstairs. so i have to upload CDs to the computer. if i borrow a friends CD and upload it then it is in no way illegal?the same thing with the libraries. pay £1 to get a CD out for a week, upload it and then you have the songs on your comp. is that legal?

as for illegal downloads, it shouldn't be the people downloading that get punished, it should be the original uploaders surely?

179. Emily -
most of the music i like is old or rare, and i cant find it on itunes or in the shops. and sometimes the music i want is only available on the US itunes so i still cant buy it.
if there was a cheaper and wider variety of music both on itunes and in shops, sure id buy it.
but until then, ill stick to getting music off friends or the internet.
besides, the majority of people cant afford to buy every song/album they like.

Downloading a few tracks is bad news for everyone involved. Yet all of us do it. The internet is a tool that we have to share and the companies who use it to share information cannot start asking for extra money. We need to ask who is at fault? The consumer or the system?
