Britannia Rules The Airwaves

Posted Thu 10 Jul 2008 11:57AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

We crashed out of the tennis and our football team failed to even qualify for Euro 2008 but when it comes to music, Brits are in a league of their own.

This year British artists account for four of the five biggest-selling albums on the globe with troubled diva Amy Winehouse leading the way. Her sophomore album Back to Black has sold 3.67 million copies already this year with its overall global sales totalling 9.78 million.

Coldplay's much anticipated fourth studio album Vida La Viva takes second place with 2.6 million sales and X-Factor winner Leona Lewis bags third position with Spirit. Hawaiian born singer-songwriter Jack Johnson scrapes in to fourth but Welsh warbler Duffy beats Madonna to fifth place with Rockferry.

Elsewhere, R&B acts Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey take seventh and eighth position respectively. Rapper Lil Wayne takes ninth place and Michael Jackson completes the top ten with his re-release of Thriller.

weather she is good or not, the fact that she still get awards and things is a joke tbh. she should be stripped. as well as any other award winner of their prizes for the drugs/drink/etc etc they are not the role model we should be showing to the children of today.
we might as well tell the kids "dont worry take drug look bad and still win and get lots of money and fame" is this really what this world is coming to?

Jenkinship's got it right there... Bunch of talentless halfwits! Amy's cool... shame she's in a bad way though, it's her own stupid doing... And why the hell are NONE of these so called 'artists' saying nothing about the war and taking a stand on all the bulls**t we have to put up with in these dark days we are living in!!??? No more heroes anymore

46. BoilingCold -
Is it me or do people insist on buying rubbish music?

47. Yahoo! Music User -
exactly stuff your iron maiden crap!!! Not many people are in 2 that sort of thing which is why they are not listed in the top 5.

Rule Britannia all the way, we've always produced great diverse music, I for one am thankful for the named artists, we could be a nation of monotonous R&B or country, but fortunately we have everything. God bless England (and Wales)

It's only rubbish if you don't like it, I'm sure many would say the music you buy is 'rubbish'.

You think Iron Maiden are EMO?????

That shows how little you know about good music..

Maiden are easily THE biggest metal band in the world at the moment, they are currently on a massive world tour playing to millions of fans.

A great British institution that get sadly over looked because they don't conform to mainstream media and have never had their own reality show!!

Iron Maiden only managed 666 on the list!

Live Amy plays around with songs too much, nothing like the Album, She can do it live but she prefers to change the songs into something far away from the original, I'm a big fan but not when she messes it up big time live

Musicians blabbing on about war and poverty and all that sort of stuff can be a bit preachy Kid Locust - thats why godawful Annie Lennox is'nt up there. And if the world is all doom and gloom you need a bit of cheering up with some uptempo stuff. GO WEEZER!

54. David -
Maiden still the best Uk band ever.

55. Yahoo! Music User -
I agree that the talent is at an all time low a, even in America, thats why

56. Yahoo! Music User -
i must be the only person in the world not to get Amy Winehouse you cant understand a word she's singing and she wriggles about like she needs a wee!!!! definatley better english musicians around than her!

57. teegee -
all stolen black music if you ask me. If i wanted to listen to that kind of music all i have to do is listen to my dads all time motown records...pure imitation apart from cold play

Im not surprissed as these acts are to music what the Big Mac is to cuisine and what the Trabant is to motoring. Their success is all down to smart multi-million pound marketing campaigns and the power their labels have in the distribution chain. End of.

Great to see Duffy in at number 5. She is a friend of mine from college in North Wales and is one of the most down to earth friendliest, genuine people you could ever meet. Well done Aimee !!
It's just a shame the other Amy (Winehouse) doesn't follow in here example and stay clear of the drink, drugs and scandle !

Who cares? Musical non-entities all of them.
