Britannia Rules The Airwaves

Posted Thu 10 Jul 2008 11:57AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

We crashed out of the tennis and our football team failed to even qualify for Euro 2008 but when it comes to music, Brits are in a league of their own.

This year British artists account for four of the five biggest-selling albums on the globe with troubled diva Amy Winehouse leading the way. Her sophomore album Back to Black has sold 3.67 million copies already this year with its overall global sales totalling 9.78 million.

Coldplay's much anticipated fourth studio album Vida La Viva takes second place with 2.6 million sales and X-Factor winner Leona Lewis bags third position with Spirit. Hawaiian born singer-songwriter Jack Johnson scrapes in to fourth but Welsh warbler Duffy beats Madonna to fifth place with Rockferry.

Elsewhere, R&B acts Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey take seventh and eighth position respectively. Rapper Lil Wayne takes ninth place and Michael Jackson completes the top ten with his re-release of Thriller.

alistaircunningham2003, LOL at you...

90% of people don't buy music depending on what the artist looks like, just because someone likes one type of music doesn't mean they should like all associated artists! IMO Alicia keys has a far blander voice than winehouse and duffy (I dont really like the music but can appreciate their voices). For instance I'm a metal/rock man; metallica, disturbed, rage, afi, cradle of filth, drowning pool, zep, etc etc. But I really dislike the aformentioned Iron Maiden.

I think your 'racism' comment is a belief you have have rooted within yourself. No need to accuse the public of racism, they will buy what they like the SOUND of...

"See, I think drugs have done some good things for us, I really do. And if you don’t believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a Favor.... go home tonight and take all your albums, all your tapes, and all your cd’s and burn em. Cause you know what? The musicians that made all that great music that’s enhanced your lives throughout the years...
Rrrrrrrrrrrrreal f*****g high on drugs."

COLDPLAY IS THE BEST!!!
I don`t understand how the people bought the Amy (crackhead - junkie and bad example) Winehouse. she`s just the labor of a good producer.

Remember, Amy Winehouse takes excesive amounts of drugs, so the rest of us don't have to.

Back to Black is quite brilliant.

As for the rest...

whats all his maiden crap, they have been around for nearly 30 years, they are the best live band in the world they have played to millions on tours icluding 250,000 at rock in rio (that is more than queen did at the same event)sold in excess of 50million albums worldwide.with little or no surport from the media, they play a 2 hour set at twickers on the 5 of july and every track was a hit.my son who is thirteen loved the show and is still singing songs that are 20 years old.i bet amy wine house is not around in 30 years time or will be able to play as many hits in one night.at least maiden play real instruments and orginal music unlike most of today music which is nicked of someone else via samples

95. Mike P -
...oh, and about the race thing, if you feel that Alicia Keys should be put ahead of Amy Winehouse 'cos she's black, does that make you an anti-semite?

96. dorian -

Amy Winehouse is the worst thing that has been called music (just like Lily Allen), where has the actual talent and taste gone in the music industry...
