Britannia Rules The Airwaves

Posted Thu 10 Jul 2008 11:57AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

We crashed out of the tennis and our football team failed to even qualify for Euro 2008 but when it comes to music, Brits are in a league of their own.

This year British artists account for four of the five biggest-selling albums on the globe with troubled diva Amy Winehouse leading the way. Her sophomore album Back to Black has sold 3.67 million copies already this year with its overall global sales totalling 9.78 million.

Coldplay's much anticipated fourth studio album Vida La Viva takes second place with 2.6 million sales and X-Factor winner Leona Lewis bags third position with Spirit. Hawaiian born singer-songwriter Jack Johnson scrapes in to fourth but Welsh warbler Duffy beats Madonna to fifth place with Rockferry.

Elsewhere, R&B acts Alicia Keys and Mariah Carey take seventh and eighth position respectively. Rapper Lil Wayne takes ninth place and Michael Jackson completes the top ten with his re-release of Thriller.

Amy Winehouse, Leona Lewis and Duffy are trying to hard to sound American. I don't think its a victory for British music. Well done to Coldplay!

Funeral For A Friend!!! They are the best and they deserve it way more than Amy Winehouse!!!

105. LUCA -

None of these 3 ladies are classical beauties, so they must be there for their talent and high sales. At least we don't have novelty acts like Chas n Dave and The Smurfs in our charts anymore.

My ears bleed, literally, when listening to Amy, Lily, and all those absolutely **** singers that put britain to shame with their music, I mean seriously where has the decent music flown off to, bring back good rock not this ''NU'' rock that sounds just as bad as Amy does for the Jazz/Pop area of music, or whatever she does, i can't listen for long enough to find out.

Can anyone on here spell! Amy has been in every news paper and magazine everyday, for every month since the release of Back to Black. It is an exceptionally good album, but attached to it is her and the proof that "THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS BAD PUBLICITY" pedophiles being the only exclusive exception!!

She does not make drugs look cool. Her Glastonbury performance was laughable. She wobbled around and muttered incoherently pausing only to girly slap some poor unfortunate in the crowd. If anyone else had turned out a performance as below par as that they'd have been slated. I was sickened to hear Zane Lowe et al proclaiming that it was a strong performance. Enough! Stop giving this spoilt lowlife the limelight and she'll clean up her act. Then maybe she can actually move forward and do something with the talent that she has been so lucky to have been born with. At the moment she is all about image over content.

Cool,

But music would be even better if radio stations weren't so scared to take risks instead of sticking to the tried and tested formulaic garbage most of them play all day and night
