Powter’s Bad Day is UK’s Most Played Song

Posted Wed 16 Jul 2008 1:23PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Daniel Powter's dreary ballad Bad Day has become the UK's most played song over the last five years according to the PRS, the organisation that collects songwriter's royalties.

Kelly Clarkson claimed second place with Because of You followed by James Blunt's turgid anthem You're Beautiful. The Scissor Sisters I Don't Feel Like Dancing and Snow Patrol's Chasing Cars complete the top 5. See the full list below.

Commercial radio has suffered heavy losses over the last few years, losing many of its listeners to alternative forms of broadcasting. With playlists like these it's easy to see why!

  3. James Blunt - You're Beautiful

I think they're all fab especially Bad day, Because of you and Chasing cars, I don't know why Chasing cars isn't at number one! You're beautiful - ok a little depressing though!!!

they are obviously good tunes, thats the point of the list, people like listening to them, not everyone likes the same music, it doesnt mean those songs are crap, it just means they are not your type, its called free thinking, why do people get so pissed at the thought of people liking differant music from them? i dont like all the tunes on the list but its obviosly what works!!

25. LOUISE G -
These are probably the most played songs coz record companies probably give more royalties for playing rubbish songs on the radio just to get them popular, then people get sucked into it.
The radio will have the same death as cassette as they play the same songs and continous adeverts.
Why cant orginal and new talent be played?

26. VANESSA -
They all suck more than a Tottenham crack tart and are possibly enough to make a Care Bear mentally snap and go on a homicidal rampage. I know that when these songs play on the radio, my impulses opine that I should smash the radio- immediately. Unfortunately, I have to deny my impulses the contentment because it is all too often not my radio to smash, or it is in a fast food shop, therefore way beyond my control.
I don't know why, but Take That's shine conjures up mental images of Jonathan King dancing in a parody of a traditional Royal Variety Show performance kind of way. As for James Blunt(Isn't that cockney rhyming slang) I had more than enough of that song and that filthy ditty about three wise men having a semi by the sea, how very rude! I did try to use my imagination as to the question posed "where are you now" all I could think of was some nudist beach. I find the whole lot unabidable, the backing vocals on sweet escape(woooooooh woooooooooh) sound like a woodpigeon. Chasing cars makes me want to play on the M25. In actual fact, I can safely say that I would rather snort cayenne pepper or even listen to Kajagoogoo's greatest hits than listen to any of that drivel- and I thought I despised Kajagoogoo.
I am of the opinion that the advertisments on commercial radio are more enjoyable than the music, and to be honest, I have suffered eczema less irritating.

27. joe -
bad day...really bad song

28. mark -
What a fantastic pile of utter tripe.

29. CREEDMORE -
We have Heart Radio during night shifts so I have heard these hundreds of times but recognise only three.
The next survey will show Frankie's Gun by the Felice Brothers(?) is tops or I'll eat my safety helmet!

Kelly Clarkson is the best one there!!!

It's a depressing selection (for the most part) and a sad reflection on the radio stations that put together their play lists - Looks like laziness on their part or if I'm really cynical are they getting bigger incentives from the artist's record companies to increase the times their songs are played?

32. Charlie -
Corinne Bailey-Rae
AGHHHHHH
i hate that song-it is just stupid!

33. G -
james blunt in there what a pile of crap. scissor sisters, snowpatrol and maroon 5 should be there but the rest no way

34. Yahoo! Music User -
so what you dont like it dont listen to it, why waste time moaning about it, its the most played list not the most liked!!!

35. Yahoo! Music User -
why is it people are obsessed with pop???

there are other things to listen to as well!!!

36. Yahoo! Music User -
David ain't bad i lyk that song. Snow patrol aren't bad either i have Chasing Cars on my phone. the rest are pathetic:

37. ANGELA -
top 10, really??? aah now i understand, most played. when trying to empty a club, pub, party, room etc. most of those songs would do it in a flash. gwen stefani is brilliant, but i must miss the places where she's played so often.

38. VANESSA -
I reiterate my previous point, that this irritating assortment of auditory sickness is not something that I make a decision to tune in to. It is imposed on me. What am I meant to do? Make a pedantic effort to avoid all situations where somebody might decide to tune into a commercial radio station with no consideration to people's right to not suffer the discomfort of noise pollution?
You obviously haven't considered the fact that commercial radio is an occupational hazard of leaving your abode, right down to a quick trip to your local convenience store. Whoever wrote comment No. 34, you are clearly lacking logic as I don't think anyone who is complaining listens to these awful songs as an elective form of deliberate self harm, they are thrust upon us like auditory rape.

39. Amber -
Kelly should be number one

40. ALISON -
i love kelly clarksons song so ner ner ner ner ner ..........!!!!!
