Speech Debelle wins the Barclaycard Mercury Prize

Posted Wed 9 Sep 2009 8:30AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
London born rapper Speech Debelle was the surprise winner of last night's much coveted Barclaycard Mercury Prize, seeing off stiff competition from eleven other acts to take the £20,000 trophy.

The 26 year old rapper's debut album "Speech Therapy" which deals with her troubled teenage years, has only sold 3000 copies to date although sales are likely to surge following last night's win.

She said: "I feel so good. It feels better than I imagined. My family's here. My friends are here. I'm from south London. I don't get emotional - I'm emotional.

"This proves if you believe in something and you think you can do it, you can achieve it."

The win came as a shock to many pundits who had predicted wins for La Roux, Bat for Lashes or Florence and the Machine.

Debelle now join the ranks of Franz Ferdinand, Badly Drawn Boy and the Arctic Monkeys who have all won the prize in previous years.

To be fair i'd say she joins the likes of MS Dynamite, Talvin Singh & Roni Size. In other words she won't do **** and will be forgotten by end of year.
This isn't having a go at her music but just what i think will happen....

Shouldn't it be renamed the Mercury Meaningless Prize? A once prestigoius music award has now become a poisoned chalice. The winners far from going on to bigger and better things just disappear as if this was their peak or 15 minutes of fame. Maybe the judging panel should be changed or how it's decided but one things for sure it's hard to see this award still going for much longer now that it's routine for the winners to flop. Bizarre choices over the years seemingly 'just to be different' rather than who actually should win. This award is championship standard but heading for league 1 at full speed. Time for a major rethink?

Why you think it should be called meaningless is beyond me,the likes of Roni Size,Ms Dynamite,Badly Drawn Boy,Franz Ferdinand and The Arctics to mention a few,i'm sure prove that its hardly just choosing "to be different".

Not sure who is on the panel but the winner is chosen becasue they are different, the singers voice has to have some attraction and lyricaly they also need to have some inspiration.

Out of all the contenders this year i would have said Speech was up there and i know Florence was the mail contender but if you follow the Mercury awards you will know that the obvious rarely wins...............its not some pop music awards its for serious artists...............unfortunately some who do win do go pop in the end...Arctics and the alike.

The Mercury Prize became a bit of a joke a few years back. Tries far to hard to be non mainstream and ends up just alienating people from the awards. I don't think it should just be mainstream but surely there is a better way of doing things. Split it and have 2 awards, Debut albums/albums with lower sales (like a radar award) and then a seperate award for more established acts.

Give her a chance! Why do ppl on here have to be so negative??!! Jesus! At least she's doing something productive & you'll be eating your words if she still is active in the music scene for years to come!.

It think she's fresh and the twist in her music is the "Jazz Effect". Its different from what you hear around, infact kinda reminds me of Digable Planets, sorta?!?
Don't forget looks aint everything unless Amy Winehouse would have been buried long ago in a winehouse!!!!

I first heard of Speech Debelle when this year's Mercury nominee list was announced. I checked out her album on Big Dada's website where it streams in its entirety and i truly loved it. I am so glad that she won. I think this was totally deserving. Check out her album and you'll agree.
