John Lydon Accused of Racist Attack

Posted Mon 21 Jul 2008 1:05PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke suffered facial bruising and a split lip following an alleged racist attack by Sex Pistols singer John Lydon at Barcelona's Summercase festival on Saturday.

Okereke, claims the attack took place after he attempted to engage Lydon in conversation backstage however Lydon became "intimidating and aggressive while his entourage responded with a racist tirade, including the statement, 'your problem is your black attitude'." Three members of Lydon's staff then allegedly attacked Okereke.

Several other musicians witnessed the fight including Kaiser Chiefs frontman Ricky Wilson who was said to have intervened in the brawl. Spanish and UK police are now thought to be investigating the incident.

Lydon made the headlines last month for his verbal attack on Welsh pop startlet Duffy at London's prestigious Mojo Awards. He is also being sued by a female assistant who he allegedly punched in the face during a frenzied argument over accommodation at a five-star Los Angeles hotel.

There is no acceptable place for racism, doesn't matter who you are.

I think this kind of behaviour is disgusting and as for people who think it is ok they should take a long hard look at themselves and there values. How would they feel if that was a member of there family being treated like that.

Hey, it says 'his entourage' carried out the attack and abuse, not him. Another example of the press making up headlines to sensationalise?

he says it as he sees it

the sort of behaviour you would expect from a lout, so no suprise there. He's an old has been, that age has done nothing, to mellow his nasty ways, usually people learn & improve with age, this is a good example of the exception that prooves the rule,he attracts the LCD (lowest common denominator....for the benifit of my friends comments above me) hence their mindless comments.

Half a story. John Lydon, Racist? I think not.

Yeah that would have been acceptable in 76 when he was just trying to be as outlandish as possible, but he's old enough to know better.

However, saying someone's black attitude is a problem is not racist, because upbringing, racial or not can have an impact on behaviour.

How do we know the racism was'nt against John!!! Why do we alway assume its the white man being racist.

Before jumping to the conclusion that Lydon is guilty with your accusations that he is a 'racist' and a 'prick', how about waiting to see what the outcome is of the police's enquiries? Having allegations made about you doesn't make you guilty!

Is the phrase "your problem is your black attitude" actually a racist remark? It is a generic term for a certain attitude which we have all witnessed but is not specific to all black individuals..indeed it is an attitude which is frowned upon by the majority of black people. One must also ask the question what prompted this response from Lydon in the first place. If this other bloke said something to annoy Lydon (a man I have very little regard for by the way) then he must accept the consequences..it's true equality! All too easy to hide behind the race card these days!

I really believe that this politically thing is rather getting out of hand, although I don't believe in abuse of any sort, I do think that some people take things a bit too far though.
