Bond Snubs British Favourites

Posted Wed 30 Jul 2008 11:04AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Bond producers have sensationally snubbed British acts in favour of American duo Alicia Keys and Jack White to record the theme for the forthcoming James Bond film, Quantum of the Solace.

Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Leona Lewis and Duffy had previously been in the frame to record the signature tune but have been passed over by the film's producers.

Jack White and Alicia Keys will record Another Day to Die, the first duet in the history of James Bond theme tunes.

Jack White is best known as the frontman of rock bands The White Stripes and The Raconteurs whilst Keys has received international acclaim for her sultry brand of R&B. Some commentators however have expressed misgivings at the pairing suggesting that British artists would be more appropriate to record the theme given the content of the film.

Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli who produced the film said: "We are delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia."

What do you think about the choice for this year's Bond theme? Are the producers right to opt for US acts or should they stick with the best of British?

Leona Lewis should have done it, she's known in the UK and the US and she has an amazing voice. I love Alicia Keys tho, but not Jack White fan. Not convinced about a duet either. Maybe they should have got all the previous Bond theme singers together and done a Band-Aid type scenario! I have to say, the days of the Bond theme being a huge hit are kinda done, so I guess that's the reason for the duet and with those two, the spectrum of taste is WIDE.

i dont think it really matters who sings it aslong as they were chosen because they were the best for the gig not because they are american or english or whatever

Live and let die i say. Who cares about Bond anyway? They should have buried him years ago

Total Rubbish, they should have chosen Leona Lewis as I believe there is no one with a voice as pure a versatile as hers in the music business at the moment and she is a perfect stunner that would look good in posters and on the big screen.

James bond.. british based uh? time to get away from long held stereotypes. how something a little more off the hook - a black bond!

46. Kelly -
I think that Leona Lewis would of been good. Strong voice, close to Shirley Bassey. Does it really matter though? Does'nt interest me. An i agree with emma_mcallister. Banning fake tan from school does'nt affect the learning,Neither does wearing make-up. Used to have wash it off when i was at school, they even had make-up remover lol.

Keep it British - we have some fabulous bands and solo singers. KEEP IT BRITISH

I'm not a massive Winehouse fan, but I do think an Amy Winehouse/Mark Ronson theme tune could potentially have been a classic, remeniscent of the old John Barry/Shirley Bassey era.

As usual, the studios have gone for the safe option, and I predict that the Jack White and Alicia Keys song will be as mediocre and forgetable as any of the awful mid 80s Bond themes.

Oh, and anyone who is against an Amy song based on her drug habits, do remember that Paul McCartney was fond of the odd puff now and then, and he recorded the best Bond theme ever!

stars whom are druggies can not be role models and therefore are not my favourites and they should not be allowed to represent great britain regardless of their resepctive talent.

A good choice for the New Bond theme would have been Scottish band GUN who have just got back together. They have recorded Steal your fire and Don't say it's over in the past, both appropriate songs for a Bond film!

Plus they have just gone back into the studio with new vocalist Toby Jepson (ex Little Angels) so they are in the right place to produce a classic....

The last movie was superb and the theme tune by chris cornell was very good and in line with the traditional as well as a new modern bond, but its the film that counts most of all so it better be good, let's just hope it's not R&B.

What about Paris Hilton? a real emerging talent in the music world.

Agree with comment 35! Bond Themes immortalise singers to a larger extent than some of their own records do! Amy has missed a great opportunity and only has herself to blame! Interested to hear what the choon will be like... I wasn't too keen on the last one, didn't sound bond enough for me, but that's just my taste! Would like to see Annie Lennox do one!! No more Bassey though... the old bag has done enough!! :-)

Amy winehouse should not even be considered she had 1 half decent album ??? and she,s a raving junkie that seeks publicity with her many overdoses, i wish she would crawl back into a drug den and never surface AGAIN.

I don't see why this story is important. Bond maybe British but the films producers are from the USA.
Previous themes have come from Nancy Sinatra (USA), Carly Simon (USA), A-ha (Norway), Gladys Knight (USA), Tina Turner (USA), Sheryl Crow (USA), Garbage (Ok the singers a Brit but the other 3 were USA), Madonna (USA). So what's the problem?
Plus Duffy, Amy Winehouse and Leona Lewis are still relatively unastablished (Duffy has 1 album, Winehouse 2, Leona Lewis 1) hardly as established as Jack White with 8 albums.

Its not about 'British talent' its about what goes with the movie. Can you imagine Amy winehouse and Mark ronson type musical style in a Bond film? Doesnt go.

Oh and this has been done before! Pathetic attempt at 'new' thats for sure.

Why does it matter who does the song as long as it's a good one and fits the Bond theme??? Please can we talk about something more important than a petty cat fight between Brittish and American music!!!

there probably wasnt enough money in it for simon cowell.
amy winehouse why would you even concider the skanky cow

I think " brynmeredithspawton@talk21.com" should grow up before posting any comments about the blond chimp Craig -- Casino Royale is one of the best Bond films ever and not choosing Amy Winehouse (a constant drug abuser), or Leona Lewis (a reality show winner) or Mark Ronson ( a mediocre singer) is a good choice -- the Bond films have always been about class and good taste - Amy Winehouse is truly the most disgusting person ever to break into the music scene and the only good place for her would be in a mausoleum...Well done Bond producers - keep up the standards!

60. Susan -
They should be British. We have more than enough excellent artistes in this country and the choice should be chosen from one (or two)of these. James Bond is a British institution and should be kept as such.
