Bond Snubs British Favourites

Posted Wed 30 Jul 2008 11:04AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Bond producers have sensationally snubbed British acts in favour of American duo Alicia Keys and Jack White to record the theme for the forthcoming James Bond film, Quantum of the Solace.

Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Leona Lewis and Duffy had previously been in the frame to record the signature tune but have been passed over by the film's producers.

Jack White and Alicia Keys will record Another Day to Die, the first duet in the history of James Bond theme tunes.

Jack White is best known as the frontman of rock bands The White Stripes and The Raconteurs whilst Keys has received international acclaim for her sultry brand of R&B. Some commentators however have expressed misgivings at the pairing suggesting that British artists would be more appropriate to record the theme given the content of the film.

Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli who produced the film said: "We are delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia."

What do you think about the choice for this year's Bond theme? Are the producers right to opt for US acts or should they stick with the best of British?

You are just a sweeeet person. You have really seen the sensitive side of the issue, and i have found out that you are completely right.
I always get confused how Brits praise something that they know is not good, but because its British or English to be precise, not 'foreigner'! And when there is competition, what happens? Britain ends up with no qualification! Lord!Watch France-football. USA tennis or presidential race! British, its high time we promoted people with wonderful talents nomatter where they were born provided they are called British citizens. They are out there by who cares? Brits,Lets face the reality.Lets break this cheap politics and win,win and win. Britain will be more powerful; Isnt it?

Bring back Dame Shirley - as a previous Bond theme said "Nobody does it better" Bond is still the longest & classiest franchise going, so let's get the best artist we can and that's Shirl! (& she's a Brit, just like Bond, so even better)

Very good choice, however, if they knew they wanted american artists to record the theme then it should have been announced that way. And what would be wrong with Duffy recording it just because she's only had one album released, many sucessful singing and acting careers have started with a Bond theme or film!

I hope what I've read isn't true that the new song will be called "another day to die" as it's sounds like "die another day" which was the worst film and song in Bond's history. A lot of the previous Bond artist were not British and no one complained before so why now.

"The 'original' bond would've had more semblance of Danny Craig had they thought to honour tradition."

You mean half Scot, half Swiss and with jet black hair, as Fleming wrote him? Craig looks nothing like the part and spends too much time crying and cocking the job up! Good film, very well made, but not a "Bond" film at all ;-)

I have always thought that Muse would be great for a Bond theme but I can see how they would not be everyone's cup of tea.

if only george formby was still alive

Although I feel that it would be best that the bond the bond track be by a British artist, I would be embarrassed if the British person was Amy Winehouse. Do we really want a drug abuser in desperate need of a hair cut to represent us and represent Bond. She would only cause controversy and bring the film down.

Birtish based film i suppose it would be nice to have Leona lewis but hey the producers obviously wanted a duet for a change and Amy whinehouse needs to sort her head out nut best people for the job.

wpb662svega16.What matters is the talent.Even the stone age people were creative. They discovered lots of thing which are now modernised and are being used worldwide. We have got herbs everywhere. They used herbs to treat lots of diseases and food too.So, do we have herbs inform of food today or i was wrong when I saw a Chinese herbal treatment......
Anyhow we are talking about talent. People who are able to bring out the goodness of the film.Self descipline matters too.
And what we should remember is that it is all about BUSINESS.
These Bond guys have to look for people who will boost their stuff. I think they have got the reason why they chose these two people, and they are the ones who know what kind of melody they need from them. Im sure they have ever listened to their music.
All in all, they are the ones (Bond) in the field, they know why they chose them.
Lets wait and see what comes out. Wish them all the best.

"Bond producers have sensationally snubbed British acts".....where's the sensation in this whole story?

It doesn't matter who sings it (as long as they can sing of course). What matters is who writes it. Shirley Bassey, Nancy Sinatra, aha, and Duran Duran are singled out, but nobody here mentions John Barry (and he is responsible for the Bond sound), or his successor David Arnold, who has at least tried to maintain some consistency, while updating the style. At least the last song (the pretty decent You Know My Name) was incorporated into the Casoo Royale score, and that hadn't happened since The Living Daylights (which was the last one John Barry composed for). By the way, if you have never heard of John Barry, or George Martin, or Bill Conti, or David Arnold, you probably don't know enough to comment in the first place.
