Bond Snubs British Favourites

Posted Wed 30 Jul 2008 11:04AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Bond producers have sensationally snubbed British acts in favour of American duo Alicia Keys and Jack White to record the theme for the forthcoming James Bond film, Quantum of the Solace.

Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Leona Lewis and Duffy had previously been in the frame to record the signature tune but have been passed over by the film's producers.

Jack White and Alicia Keys will record Another Day to Die, the first duet in the history of James Bond theme tunes.

Jack White is best known as the frontman of rock bands The White Stripes and The Raconteurs whilst Keys has received international acclaim for her sultry brand of R&B. Some commentators however have expressed misgivings at the pairing suggesting that British artists would be more appropriate to record the theme given the content of the film.

Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli who produced the film said: "We are delighted and pleased to have two such exciting artists as Jack and Alicia."

What do you think about the choice for this year's Bond theme? Are the producers right to opt for US acts or should they stick with the best of British?

This is quite clearly a matter of opinion, however its a question of feeling.
For example, imagine James Blunt, Mr Bean, or Oasis singing The Star Spangled Banner at a super bowl event.. you could do it, but somehow it doesn't feel right.

You can argue that neither of those choices would make ideal candidates for a Bond theme, but 007 is all together a British 'event'. From the original & present writers to story line, atmosphere, hummer, the majority of cast & crew, infact its entire premise is decidedly 'Blighty'.

Every county has its 'icons' & traditions.. Bond is one of england's. So, out of tradition & respect lets keep the 'grove' english if possible.

In the first place, I hate the new Bond guy: Craig Whatever. He is so unBond to me, so I really dont care who sings the soundtrack - it'll be a disaster!

O no a rock star on drugs (winehouse), doing the bond theme. We can’t have that on a film about a man who drinks martini kills for a living and shags countless girls for fun. That would never do

What's all the fuss about... Amy needs a break to recover from her drug problems. I really don't understand why she should always be compensated for being an addict. she ought to get her life back in order. With her current situation, i won't pay a dime to watch her perform. It's like giving her money to go buy more drugs and i would rather give such money to the homeless and needy. And i do believe that the producers know what they are doing by making this decision.

agree, Muse would have been great, better than the Whinners

In my humble opinion, Mark Ronson would be prime for an exceptional theme. His talents lend themselves to the classy, loungey ideal of Bond - just review what he did with The Zutons' "Valerie". If he isn't doing this one, he'll have to do one in the near future!

Its a british film, use British artists not so called 'hip' Americans. Everyone in the UK seems to want to be American now its a damned shame. These recording artists have not got the gravitas for a Bond theme; like Paul McCartney or Shirley Bassey. Look at the crap that was the Maddona theme tune. There are plenty of other UK artists that arent peddling pop trash - even Russell Watson or Katherine Jenkins... maybe backed by Escada or perhaps more appropriately, Bond.

Gordon Brown shouldve voiced his opinion.... 'British films for Brtish artists'.

If there is going to be a female vocal then give it to the worlds best singer and Bond girl, Shirley Bassey!
BTW, Helen Mirren should have played "M" to get the time-line right.
