Andrew Lloyd Webber for Eurovision

Posted Mon 20 Oct 2008 1:25PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is set to compose Britain's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The composer will write a song for the winner of Your Country Needs You, a BBC television program in which musicians compete for an audience vote.

After a string of disappointing entries into the competition many have called for an experienced hand to break Britain's run of poor scores. Previous Eurovision losers have included X-Factor's Andy Abraham who finished joint last in 2008 and Jemini's entry Cry Baby which famously received "null points".

"In my life I've never shied away from the impossible and this looks like the biggest mission impossible of all time," said Lloyd Webber in a statement on Saturday.

Controversy was rife at last year's Eurovision final with seasoned presenter Terry Wogan complaining about the political nature of the voting.

Can Sir Andrew win it for Britain or has the political voting got out of hand? Have your say below.

Does he know what he's letting himself in for? Shame, humiliation!

If anyone can do it Sir Andrew can

Perhaps if the song was written in Estonian we might get more votes!!!!- Robbie

I doubt it if Wogan is right

Political side of the competition is out of hand, indeed! There is no way we can win while we are so friendly with nations that are making enemies in Europe. Besides all this, I thought the song itself could be performed by anyone but the writer/composer has to be an amateur.

I think this is a great idea but unfortunately some countries will still block vote.. unless the voting system changes..

Andrew Lloyd Webber writes music,so who's going to write the words.

If Sir Andrew can't bring it home for us then no one can.

Very true. The voting was decidedly political and not based on performance and content.

It was just a complete farce from start to finish.

IT WON'T MATTER HOW WONDERFUL THE SONG IS, AND IT WILL BE IF ANDREW WRITES IT, WE WON'T WIN, BECAUSE WE ARE NOT POPULAR ABROAD. BUT IF YOU WANT A BRILLIANT SINGER ANDREW, MY SON'S PARTNER HAS A FABULOUS VOICE

I dont think it has anything to do with the music - its definately political

I was hoping that the UK wouldn't bother to go in for the Eurovision next year. its a complete farce with all the eastern block countries voting for each other. let them get on with it. I heard that the UK pay lots of money towards the Eurovision Song Contest. I think we should pull out and lets see how they get on without us. It doesn't matter who writes our song, none of the other countries will vote for us, its a waste of time and money.

The Eurovision hasnt been about music for many years but merely an inappropriate playground for scoring political brownie points. Why would such a talented and acredited musician even associate himself with such a farce?

14. Sophie -
I think the political nature of the voting is too big a problem, and I don't think a good song-writer like Sir Andrew can change it with a song.

15. Yvonne -
If Sir Andrew's song is not in the top few then we should give up.
His music is loved all over the world so it should get points.
Let's hope britain can pick a voice to suit the song.

16. steven -
The Eurovision is a joke competition for talentless people to enter and Sir Andrew should not get involved in such a pittaful competition

17. Katherine -
We'll never win, it's all politics,

18. Rebecca -
Its not about the songs, it is completely political.

19. Gail B -
No, it needs to be written and performed by Bill Bailey with verses in French and German (and any other languages he knows).
