Andrew Lloyd Webber for Eurovision

Posted Mon 20 Oct 2008 1:25PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is set to compose Britain's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The composer will write a song for the winner of Your Country Needs You, a BBC television program in which musicians compete for an audience vote.

After a string of disappointing entries into the competition many have called for an experienced hand to break Britain's run of poor scores. Previous Eurovision losers have included X-Factor's Andy Abraham who finished joint last in 2008 and Jemini's entry Cry Baby which famously received "null points".

"In my life I've never shied away from the impossible and this looks like the biggest mission impossible of all time," said Lloyd Webber in a statement on Saturday.

Controversy was rife at last year's Eurovision final with seasoned presenter Terry Wogan complaining about the political nature of the voting.

Can Sir Andrew win it for Britain or has the political voting got out of hand? Have your say below.

he has taken a lot on with agreeing to do this. However if his song doesn't do well will people blame it on the country or will they put the blame on him. The competition is very political and we never seem to get many votes. I wish him good luck.

How about a re-working of the splendid Flanders & Swann classic - 'The English are Best'? It'd have about as much chance of getting anywhere. It's just another chance for Lloyd-Webber to get his face on TV as the Big Boss of a weekly talent elimination programme.

I think its great Sir Andrew wants to do this but no one will ever get the title away from Russia now, to many countries want to stay on their good side!

I don't think its necessarily Political, it's just a fact that UK citizens can only vote for the UK entry if they happen to be living/staying abroad. Many Swedish citizens live in Denmark/commute across the bridge, Russians live in Finland, Poles live in UK...that's why in my view so many countries appear to vote for their neighbours.

Having decided that the E.S.C. is a political device for measuring Britains popularity in the world (Europe)we have two choices 1. Improve our popularity. 2. Get out and spend our money on something more worth while.

ALW is a genius and I do not doubt that if he puts his mind to it he will definitely write the best song in Eurovision next year. In addition, there is every chance that the competition to find a talent to represent the UK is going to bring forward someone who will make it the best performance in the competition.

However, we will still be lucky to get into the top 20 because the quality of the UK contribution has nothing to do with the votes that it does and does not get.

Who cares!

The last few Uk entries have been musically really bad and Webber is terrific with ballads, can he pull off a catchy Eurovision hit ? I don't know.

It's a real shame that Eurovision has come down to politics. Andrew Lloyd Webber is one of the best British composers that we have ever had - in terms of pop music - and I find it downright insulting that clowns like "tommyrattigan - I could write better" and "Claret! - His bland and dreary style is ideal!" are so self-righteous with their comments. Perhaps they should go and sprawl out in their armchairs with their can of beer and start watching their football again. Leave comments here to people who can actually appreciate and appraise music properly.
As for Eurovision, unfortunately I too have the feeling that Britain is a lost cause given the political voting. However, the importance is in taking part, not in the winning of the prize. If we don't take part we lose anyway, so let's give it our best effort and get behind ALW and whatever his composition may be.

Never thought he would do such a thing but he never fails so....good luck.. bonne chance...suerte!!!!! However there are other points in question.. the singer, the lyrics & of course the voting system that really has to change.

Go Andrew LLoyd Webber! Whatever his song is, it will undoubtedly be the best that the UK has had for a while. Also they are changing the voting system with the installation of a judging panel whose scores will contribute to half of the points. We should hopefully be able to finish well within the top half of the table next year!

The Eurovision Song Contest!! If anything is nothing more than a dreary misconception of an obsolete legend, the Contest is surely it!!
Scrap the whole bloody thing, I say!

56. Irene -
Perhaps if the British (and particularly Terry Wogan) hadn't been so mocking towards the Norwegians in the past, the British entries might have done better now.

Go for it sunshine!

Good for Sir Andrew
We know it is all rigged, but if he can't do it no one can and we'll know for certain just how worthless the ESC is if the song does not do well.
Good luck
JJ

If the voting system changed and each country simply had a number and the judges vote for country number 12 for instance and the identity of the countries is revealed at the end,; we could well have a chance of winning. Andrew Llord Webber is an absolute genius and he commands respect even if we, as a nation do not.

The voting system is the problem. we have no chance no matter who writes or sings the song. its a waste of time and effort entering.
