Andrew Lloyd Webber for Eurovision

Posted Mon 20 Oct 2008 1:25PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is set to compose Britain's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The composer will write a song for the winner of Your Country Needs You, a BBC television program in which musicians compete for an audience vote.

After a string of disappointing entries into the competition many have called for an experienced hand to break Britain's run of poor scores. Previous Eurovision losers have included X-Factor's Andy Abraham who finished joint last in 2008 and Jemini's entry Cry Baby which famously received "null points".

"In my life I've never shied away from the impossible and this looks like the biggest mission impossible of all time," said Lloyd Webber in a statement on Saturday.

Controversy was rife at last year's Eurovision final with seasoned presenter Terry Wogan complaining about the political nature of the voting.

Can Sir Andrew win it for Britain or has the political voting got out of hand? Have your say below.

I'm afraid I think it is time we gave up wasting time and money on something we can no longer win since it became so political.
Having said that if Andrew writes it, it may bring us a couple of places up the board.

Sorry JosephTracey but I am the no. 1 ESC fan. I've been watching it every year for as long as I can remeber. We need to have pride in being British and we should support our acts regardless of whether the voting system is rigged or not. Andrew commands respect on a global scale and regardless of whether we recive 0 pints again or not, we should be proud of him and our nation.

Hi there! I don't understand why England has to complain... England has won the competition so many times in the past! Nobody complained about it before. We have more countries that share the same 'taste' in music now. When I saw the videoclip of the Russian song last year and I heard the lyrics, I knew it will win! Not because it was Russia's song... it was a good song with nice lyrics and a famous experienced singer (maybe unknown to UK) who hasn't been X factor's participant. I think it is nice to see that maybe other countries have raised the standards of the competition. There were so many countries that didn't make it to the second part of the competition. Why have they complained?
I am looking forward to listening Andrew Lloyd Weber in Eurovision. That will be great!

I think to be perfectly honest the voting system has got to change before Britain or any other of the "Old Europe" nations finally get a look in at winning the Eurovision Song Contest again. TW was right last year when he said that the voting system was too biased in favour of the Eastern European states to allow for another British win for a very long time. So regardless of how good the song is it will always be the voting system that's at fault unless they rearrange it completely.

The Eurovision song contest is a complete waste of time and effort as things stand at the moment. The way countries are voting for each other rather than the song will mean the UK will never win again even with Sir Andrew writing it for us. Dont waste your time Sir Andrew its just not worth.

It woudl be good if they divided Europe up in sections like East, West, Central,North South and Eurasia!
Then the top two from each region go head to head!!!! It is such a big area with so much ethnic diversity that it would give each country a Fair chance in the final!

There is nothing to say that ALW's song will be better than a brilliant entry from an unknown??? But some genres just do not appeal to some nations who don't even 'get' the musicality of distant nations.

Come on. "Legend"?
The fella is a plank.
His music is rubbish.

There,s no way it may be a good song but it will get beat down by unfair political voting like our other good eruovison entrys.

But I do wish him the best of luck

Whoever writes the next Euro song should seriously consider 'ERASURE' to sing it, they have a lively personality and bring fun into all they sing and they are known and loved World Wide, so I personally think they would be given a chance to win it for us!

political

lmfaoooooo XD

It won't matter who writes the song, it's all about politics. The best thing we can do is stop humiliating ourselves and let them get on with it. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the UK and France pulled out, who would be the whipping boys then!!!!!!!

Wndrew Lloyd Webber is fantastic i like his work maybe next year if Andrew writes the song we might win fingers crossed

good luck to you

Wogan is right. We can never win again. I can't understand why UK is so hated, except for immigration. If it's because we are allied to America, tough!

116. vaidas -
EU is not just UK and France...but why nobody likes UK...that is bigger problem then Eurovission...Please think...maybe you are doing something wrong ...like a nation ?????

117. DAVID -
It really is about friends voting for each other...its sad to say but this country hasnt got many friends...doesnt matter how they do the voting the out come has in the past been very much the same.. they tried national panels of judges and that was politically motivated.. and then they went to telephone voting.. same outcome!!.. the only way it will change (if at all) is if the non eastern countries pull out in protest.. then they wont have very much of a competition.

118. ROBIN -
We will never win the Eurovision Song Contest whenever the decision is made solely by telephone votes, we need a fairer judgement of the entries by a panel of experts - but that will never happen whilst someone is making a killing out of the revenue from the telephone calls!!! We might as well give up.

YAWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

120. PETER -
we can win only if the BBC takes it seriously enough!!! ALW is a genius!!! All we need is a great voice and an agressive promotour!!! Lets bring it to London in 2010 !!! GO UK !!!
