Andrew Lloyd Webber for Eurovision

Posted Mon 20 Oct 2008 1:25PM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist
Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber is set to compose Britain's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2009. The composer will write a song for the winner of Your Country Needs You, a BBC television program in which musicians compete for an audience vote.

After a string of disappointing entries into the competition many have called for an experienced hand to break Britain's run of poor scores. Previous Eurovision losers have included X-Factor's Andy Abraham who finished joint last in 2008 and Jemini's entry Cry Baby which famously received "null points".

"In my life I've never shied away from the impossible and this looks like the biggest mission impossible of all time," said Lloyd Webber in a statement on Saturday.

Controversy was rife at last year's Eurovision final with seasoned presenter Terry Wogan complaining about the political nature of the voting.

Can Sir Andrew win it for Britain or has the political voting got out of hand? Have your say below.

andrew lloyd is one of the graetest song writers of his generation, but i am affraid i would have to agree with terry wogan, its politics not talent in todays eurovision , its sad but thats the reality, all you have to do is look at the drivel that wins.
eurovision doesnt deserve the likes of andrew lloyd webber to waste his time on it. i hope im wrong

Re Yahoo Music User's comment -
With nigh on a billion pounds in the bank, I'm pretty sure Andrew LLloyd Webber is not too phased by the challenge, whatever the outcome of the predictably political vote.

EVEN a string of EXCELLENT entries into the competition WILL NEVER break Britain's run of poor scores. iTS THE VOTING NOT THE SONGS.

An X-Factor's champion will never score against a 1 year old todler from the ("new", "adopted", "Hate seeking", "Blind-Deaf") Europeans.

All they want is to show any of their country at all is better than the real Europe.

WAKE UP.......
This is will be the unmaking of a respected Musician. He can Make a song but what does it give the Ego seeking nationalities.NOTHING.

CHANGE THE VOTING SYSTEM... Maybe... and let him do it. ARE BRITISH and IRISH becoming DUMB NOW...?

You HAVE alot the World's Best Singers and writers. Don't waste your time and money on a one sided contest

With Andrew Lloyd Webber as the composer we need the best singer we can find and show those other countries that we are the best

That is why people dont like you as a nation, as British people. Look at your attitude towards publishing comments. You dont have a taste of democratic, worse than Adrican dictatorship, you only choose to publish comments suit your view, what a crap, all of you.

or modesty aside,

Is sir Andrew LLloyd Webber Only On for a chunk of the Big BUDGET for this contest.
If it is then He is not respectable after all.

It's also geographical, to do with residents' nationality, not just political, but anyway even the second comimng of the Beatles, with John + George miraculously resurrected, would be very hard pushed.

Andrew lloyd Webber is a great composer but I fear he will be wasting his time composing a song for this now silly contest, which has now become a political voting ground. The UK will never win again as Britain and the British are no longer favourites in Europe. The best thing that the UK can do is to withdraw altogether as have other European countries recently done.I am sure we could put our monetary contributions to better use.We will only suffer further humiliation and ridicule and how will Andrew LLoyd Webber feel afterwards?

Stop whining on and on about 'political voting' - who the hell gave us 95% of the votes we received last year? IRELAND !!!!!

133. FRANK -
irrespective of who the song writer is, sir Andrew will have to also find a siutable talent to sing the song, and to represent britian . the voting rules need to change, prehaps phone in results from each country would cancell out the politics and give this competition to the people, where it belongs.

Love sir Andrew and if anyone can put the Great back into Great Britain musically he can, go for it Andrew, you have the magic touch. All the luck in the world.

ALW lost the plot a long time ago and hasn't done anything decent for years. He's become just another reality show junkie who's fame is on the wane and has to do something drastic to keep in the limelight. The Eurovision SONG contest? Don't make me laugh!!! They lost the plot even before ALW...it is all politics now, and nothing to do with music.

136. CHRISTOPHER -
It has become too political and less about the quality and calibre of the songs. The UK should pull out of it and save the money for much better causes!

137. Yahoo! Music User -
Bill Bailey to sing it - has more musical talent than anyone else to appear on Song for Europe in the last few years. And he'd be entertaining and funny!

This Set up for a blog is not good. The old comments stays on page 1. The programmer have plenty of room for improvement. how would new comments be read if it always go to the last page.

The man is just class but the politics will rule the day ..... shame but that's how it is now!

Well actually I thought the english song last year was terrible and terry wogan a poor sport. In addition it was obvious that the western block had spent lavish sums on sets and costumes and the eatern block were done on a shoestring. Its great andrew lloyd weber is writing something I look forward to a decent song from england hopefully sung by a decent band/soloist that gets the votes it deserves without ostentatious special effects.
