Katy Perry in Knife Controversy

Posted Wed 22 Oct 2008 11:46AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Pop sensation Katy Perry has caused outrage in the UK after a photo of her posing with a knife was discovered on the internet.

The picture was part of a series of photos taken to promote her debut album One of the Boys but was discarded as a leading image.

Perry who is best known for her single I Kissed A Girl which topped the UK charts earlier in the year, is still to comment on the picture.

Richard Taylor, father of knife victim Damilola Taylor, told The Sun newspaper "This woman's behaviour is unacceptable.

"She must be out of her mind to pose for a picture like this. There is nothing glamorous about knives - they wreck families."

What are your thoughts on the photograph? Is Katy at fault for posing with a deadly weapon or are media being too sensitive?  Could this picture influence young people to carry knives or is it  simply a harmless PR stunt?

I'm carrying a knife now because of how much Katy Perry influences my life.

I think for older teens, 17+ this is just a harmless image, their mind is made up already and they are not as easily led as younger teens.
I think for younger teens they are easily influenced and so seeing a singer they love holding a knife as if its no big deal is a problem.
The image was pulled and should not have been seen so they obviously realised it was wrong so i dont think she should be getting negative press for it, after all it was the reord companies choice at the photoshoot and not hers i bet.
Was it right to do the photo ? no, not as a role model. Should she get negative press for the photo ? no, it was pulled.

Who on earth is Katy Perry anyway?

25. david -
much ado about nothing.
Next people will be banned from carrying pens or pencils and be forced to resort to crayons.
Slow news day was it people?

26. paul -
So do you really think some kid in inner city London is going to be swayed either way by a female pop star who sings about kissing girls.

Get real people kill not knives

To be honest, I do not see this photo and think i want a knife now....the media under estimate young people today, we arent all crazed knife carrying thugs....people who carry knives will do it without seeing an image of a famous person with them!

I think maybe she should have been a bit more sensative. If it was suggested that I pose with a knife for a publicity stunt I would refuse as there is too much knife crime around. She should have been aware of this as the publicity company should have. She should think of her target audience and the effects it will have on them.

The Girl is a fool if She thinks this sort of publicity will help her career. Short term perhaps it won't have too great an impact but long term this is career suicide.

30. Zac -
There is no need to be posing with a knife, because those stupid easy minded people will think it is ok to carry on with knife crimes.

31. Philip -
its her fault.
for posing with a knife in a country essentially ran by an oversensitive media.
seriously - half the problem with knives is everyones terrified of them. a tiny minority of people carry them, which will have likely tripled over the past several months with the knife crime stuff; wouldnt be as much of an issue if knife crime wasnt such a moral panic.
this isnt saying i think shes right though - she could probably have guessed the effect thisd have. unless all shes good for is writing annoying as hell songs :p haha

Whats the big deal? When will parents realise they have to raise thier children to know whats right and wroung. This does not promote knife attacks, it wasnt the leading image. Maybe if the parents kept an eye on their children they would not be an issue. Im so sick of the media posting this crap.

33. Abigail -
Over reacting or what!?
She's just holding a knife, not stabbing someone!

34. Michael -
PR stunt - maybe, But harmless? NO! Where has this woman and her promoters been? Have they no sense of responsibility? Clearly anyone who is prepared to agree to a stunt like this is either stupid, or has little regard for others who may become victims of knife crime. She does not deserve her success.

35. Tinkerbelle03 -
Has she no brains at all!! take her to the graves of those young people who lost their lives, let her meet the shattered families, she is a disgrace and hopefully people will boycott her innane music.

I think she should make a public apology.

36. Melissa L -
Celebrities need to be very aware that they are an influene and act accordingly. This sends out a terrible message, and so soon after than poor innocent teenage cadet was stabbed to death in Liverpool. This is an appalling misuse of fame - people like Katy Perry should be speaking out against violence, not promoting it.

37. Alicia -
i've was watching hells kitchen the other night. and low and behold, they were using knives!!!!! omg! how can people not want to ban cookery shows but ban pics like this? for all they know just below the frame she has an onion on a chopping board

38. Something -
what goes around, comes around! let her to have this picture, but if she gets stabbed then she can't blame anybody!

39. Scott -
Its amazing what new 'acts' will do for publicity. Any publicity is good so it seems...keeps you in the public eye!

Don't think we'll remember her music or this photo in a few months never mind years

In all of you commenting here you have already made the photo shoot a success.
