Katy Perry in Knife Controversy

Posted Wed 22 Oct 2008 11:46AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Pop sensation Katy Perry has caused outrage in the UK after a photo of her posing with a knife was discovered on the internet.

The picture was part of a series of photos taken to promote her debut album One of the Boys but was discarded as a leading image.

Perry who is best known for her single I Kissed A Girl which topped the UK charts earlier in the year, is still to comment on the picture.

Richard Taylor, father of knife victim Damilola Taylor, told The Sun newspaper "This woman's behaviour is unacceptable.

"She must be out of her mind to pose for a picture like this. There is nothing glamorous about knives - they wreck families."

What are your thoughts on the photograph? Is Katy at fault for posing with a deadly weapon or are media being too sensitive?  Could this picture influence young people to carry knives or is it  simply a harmless PR stunt?

This pic has not been taken in any proper context(such as a chef with a knife) how does holding a knife help promote an ablum? her and her people are not right in their heads, she cant sing anyway, u wud think with all the panic about knife crime and families being ruined by it she'd use some common sense but no... she's a fool, end of

hell never heard of her who is she

I think this is just daft to be honest. You would have to be blind or just soft to be unaware of the knife crime that is sweeping the UK. Things like this being used in advertising is what is causing the epidemic to spread so widely. A knife like the one she is holding is primarily carried as a weapon adding to the Albums title. Its highly ignorant and very insensitive for the countless families who have lost loved ones due to this wicked crime. Artists who go to such extremities to promote a fan base are no better than the offenders who carry the weapons. Get a grip and show some support rather than condone it.

"thats not a knife, this is a knife!"

Get real people. If this photo makes people carry a knife then we had better start banning war films, rap culture etc etc and remove Crocodile Dundee movies from all video shops.

Oh, that last bit may have already happened!

what is wrong with some people, people have minds of their own and are able to tell between right and wrong, people dont just take in what they see in the media. its just a picture. its not like the picture is going to go stab someone
i think its quite a good pic. its goes with the theme of being one of the boys. another thing is she is american and from what i know they dont have the issues of knife crime that we have here in the uk.

whats the big deal, its only a PICTURE, people are going to carry knives regardless, i swear, the UK is so highly strung....im ashamed to call myself british!

107. GriffinG -
WTF...who cares? It's a knife...she did stab anybody, she's not wearing a shirt that says go kill someone-Jesus Christ, you crazy [profane]ing hippies...what's on the black list next, a fork?

Amy Winehouse and pete doherty take heroin. That f#cks up lives. Get that pair to 'explain' their actions first.

I really want to kill someone with a chainsaw......ive just seen a b&q advertisement & the actor looked really cool holding one!

110. littlepinkshoes -
people look up to her she should think about what she is doing

It's not just Katy who is wrong but the photographer too. They could have stopped the picture but they were all just as bad. Great PR though isn't it. Good or bad it is still PR!

I think there's far worse images aroud, watch the news. She's been ill advised, but don't destroy her cos of one picture, get real. The issue is that everyone makes an issue out of anything slightly out there, and it shows what an inhibited world we are living in at the moment...

disgrace!!!!!

114. Michael -
The whole knife debate aside - what is the photo supposed to be telling us?

Is it supposed to imply that to be 'One of the Boys' she needs a knife?

She's playing with brainless cliches. Chav.

I hate the idea of knifes in violence , i think they are disgusting and horrid , but to answer the question, no i do not think this is meant to influence anyone at all, this will not make children go out and wave knives around, but the knife is used for its shock value and to make the image more striking.

Its a flick knife, its illigal in the UK. Enough said, however a photo is just an image, she's not going around stabbing people or forcing you to carry a knife. Grow up, stop listening to the media and the tiny minority of loud voices who shout whenever they see something THEY don't like. The more people try and suppress images and ideas the stonger they become.

117. NancyP -
erm...may i add....the person who took this picture im assuming told her what they were gonna do, so she might not of chose this.
I think people need to calm down a bit.

118. charlotte -
Probably wasn't the wisest move but c'mon...its just a picture which wasn't even used. Lets get some perspective here.

119. Chad -
Album is called One Of The Boys Right?
Seeing As It's Usually Boys Who Carry Knives Around, All Katy Perry Is Doing, Is Being One Of The Boys.
Definately Not A Major Issue. If This Picture Was Founded 10 Years Or So Ago? Would It Still Get The Same Publicity? Would Of Been A Totally Different Story If She Had Used The Picture? But She Didn't.
Leaveee Her Alone... && Before People Pass Judgement On Her, Wait Til Her Side Of The Story Comes Out... As I'm Sure It'll Be Around Soon.

I think she looks quite sexy, don't need the knife in the picture though really - what a completely IDIOTIC idea that was! I can just imagine what sort of FOOL had a brainstorm about that one! "Oh, I know, I know! Let's have a photo where we make her look really sexy whilst holding a knife up to ruin it AND outrage all the people who have nothing better to do than slate HER for it and blame her for the next kid that gets stabbed!"
The photo's out now, what can we do? STAB her? Send her to prison? Ban her from ever making a public appearance anywhere ever again? People just over react about this sort of thing - the biggest crime was ruining a perfectly good picture of a very pretty girl with an ugly knife. Rather like making her pose alongside Gordon Brown!
