Katy Perry in Knife Controversy

Posted Wed 22 Oct 2008 11:46AM BST by Mitch Carter in The Guestlist

Pop sensation Katy Perry has caused outrage in the UK after a photo of her posing with a knife was discovered on the internet.

The picture was part of a series of photos taken to promote her debut album One of the Boys but was discarded as a leading image.

Perry who is best known for her single I Kissed A Girl which topped the UK charts earlier in the year, is still to comment on the picture.

Richard Taylor, father of knife victim Damilola Taylor, told The Sun newspaper "This woman's behaviour is unacceptable.

"She must be out of her mind to pose for a picture like this. There is nothing glamorous about knives - they wreck families."

What are your thoughts on the photograph? Is Katy at fault for posing with a deadly weapon or are media being too sensitive?  Could this picture influence young people to carry knives or is it  simply a harmless PR stunt?

A photo to promote a title 'One of the boys' - I'm pretty sure that that knife crime is mainly perpetrated by black people (No - not racism, National Statistics). I could understand the photo if she was black herself.

What a stupid thing to do! Its utterly irresponsible of her! There is a large amount of kids who follow everything their idols do, to jumping off buildings (superman) to fighting (WWF and Power Rangers fad). Exposure to positive glamourous images of weapons such as knives and guns desentise the youth into thinking these things have a place in society - or that they are icons of glamour and money

this is absolutely disgraceful posing with a knife these celebities know that young people look up to them and copy what they do and might encourage more youngsters to carry knives because they think it's cool.

they sould just for get about it so what

Katy Perry's "young fans" aren't the ones committing knife crimes and probably never will be. Really. Think about who her fans are...

Olorin E. you are the one who should pull your head out of your arse..... is the knife a tool of her trade... NO... is it remotely anything to do with singing NO. Grow up you saddo and fall on your blade.

I cant understand what the chef is on about. Yes I agree its not a bad thing for a chef to pose with a knife as you would assume it would be used as a cutting tool. However why would this relate to this slag holding a knife in a picture that can only relate to one thing and thats not chopping an onion....
So I think you need to revisit who has whos head up whos arse.

I say strip her of her singing contract and send her to jail.

It's not Katy's fault. It is the fault of the photographer or the director (whoever was dictating the image). The artists just do what they are told. The photo wasn't used as an album image so why does it matter anyway.

And before anyone goes off saying she could have said no to the photo then just think... young artist, debut album, wanting to make it into the big time. I wouldn't say no to the record company/publicists demands.

some stupid comments here about she doent choose the photos that are printed ,, all she has to do is say i will not pose for any pictures which show guns or knives or any other offensif weapon , this just shows what an irresponsible person she is.

134. yuven -
its just a knife...why are people been so mean to her? for people who lost their loved ones due to a knife atack i want to tell you its time to grow up..stop showing your lack of intelligence.it was not the knife who was at fault..so all cooks are potential murderers?just leave kerry alone...and fight for genuine causes there are many children soldiers in war-torn countries.what about them???never seen them on yahoo news!!!...there is so much violence in films and tv serials..then why anti-knife campaigners dont slam them????why katty perry???????

You have to ask the question 'why is she posing with a knife". I think that would be hard to answer and will serve to confirm that it was designed to gain attention and cause offence. How sad

It states that the picture was "dropped" so what's the fuss? Someone has leaked it on the internet & The Sun have pounced on it. Its a page filler on a slow weekday for The Sun which they'll never think about again, but it could ruin a young artists career. Knives wreck lives? So do Journalists.

137. Murray -
This photo is for an ad campaign about the dangers of carrying knives.

138. razell -
lol ppl are silly :P surely they know even if they remove EVERY knife from every pic/song etc...ppl would still be getting stabbed.. look at smoking!! ... how many ppl do you see smoking on tv?...kids still do it tho.. :( ppl are clutching at straws at a way to get ppl to stop stabbing :(

does anybody here really think that katy somebody or other, who wont even be in the media in six months, is really going to encourage people to carry knives and murder each other? Get real people!!

140. Yahoo! Music User -
If you link this image with encouraging knife crime, you should be ashamed of your stupidity. it's a picture of a girl with a knife, get over it. I'm sat looking on a billboard advertising maltesers but I'm not going to get any!
