Oasis Refund? Definitely Maybe

Posted Fri 5 Jun 2009 11:41AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Earlier this week, Liam Gallagher spoke cockily about the return of Oasis to the UK stage. Talking up their hat-trick of homecoming concerts at Manchester's Heaton Park, he told reporters: "In total seriousness, I reckon these gigs have the potential to be even better than the Knebworth shows", referring to the band's historic run of massive dates at the band and Britpop's peak in 1996. Looks like he couldn't have been more wrong, after the disastrous first night saw the group offering all 70,000 fans a full refund.

So where did it all go wrong? A power cut has been blamed on the technical problems that saw the band storm off-stage after just one song, to the sound of boos. They returned shortly after and kicked into "Lyla", only for the sound to fail again, with smoke apparently wafting from faulty generator equipment. There was a further delay of 40 mins before they reappeared, with Liam telling fans: "This is a free gig now. Everyone will get a refund", while brother Noel added: "The curfew's 11, but we'll play 'til they kick us off. Keep your ticket and you'll get your money back."

Oasis
were as good as their word, playing a full, 24-song set and encoring with their traditional set closer of The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus" before leaving the stage at 11.20pm. However, it seems they may already be regretting the massive payback, a move which could cost them £3 million. Towards the end of last night's gig, Noel seemed to be backtracking, telling fans: "Kind of regret offering you your money back now. Apply for it back if you wanna be a c*nt, we'll do our best for you." Sounds like fans will definitely get a refund. Definitely maybe...

Should Oasis give their fans a refund after last night's gig? Or did the band make up for the sound problems by playing a full set? Have your say here

We should get our cash back. In '96 they were fresh faced. Now they've got more wrinkles than Jagger had in '96.

Sorry, but if you guys all think they are such a bunch of C**ts why did you bother going to see them, at the end of the day I'm guessing you got to see one of the best bands in the world today perform 25 great songs which is more than you'll get from most bands these days and in the end they delivered what you'd payed for so whether you claim your refund is up to you. How about you all stay in next time they do a tour so people who actually like them might get to buy tickets!!

i dont think people should get any money back, there was a technical problem, it was fixed and they went on to play the whole of there set, which went over the curfew time.
i say no refund to anyone.

If you're prepared to pay that much for a gig with that lot of arrogant t****** perhaps you ought to broaden your interests.

if most people are moaning about what he said then why have you bothered to watch the gig in the first place, they finished the gig after all the problems, people are only moaning because he mentioned the word refund, Its clear he made a mistake at the time he said it, & tried to make a joke of it by calling us c****,lets move on & give him a break.

What's the problem? There was a technical fault which was rectified and Oasis delivered a fantastic performance. Pity the scoungers who want something for nothing!!

If they played the concert and you enjoyed it then why apply for your money back? They offered the refund because they probably just wanted to end the concert there and then but they played as professionals should. stop complaining!

156. Alex -
They offered to give the money back didnt they? They should cough back up. Enough of their fans by their records, and they paid for a concert not to be insulted when they took the offer of their money back.

157. Jon -
I'm sure less people would apply for it back if he hadn't been a twat about it later on (ultimately biting the hands that feed them).
They offered the refund, so they are bound by it
