Does St Lucia Want Amy?

Posted Mon 22 Jun 2009 12:18PM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Amy Winehouse may have moved to St Lucia but her pop saga rumbles on as the ever nosey, judgemental world looks on. Only last week, her parents spoke out with sad resignation at their daughter's fate, with her mother Janis admitting she would do anything to "rescue" the singer. While Amy appears to be making progress in her battle against drugs, drink now seems a bigger problem as rather desperate footage of her playing drums seemingly off her head illustrated. So has the move to the Caribbean actually done her any good?

Well, news reaches Snap, Crackle and Pop that Winehouse has now lodged a residency bid, turning her massive holiday into a full-on emigration. "We are aware of Amy wanting to live here on a permanent basis. We have received an application and are looking into it", an anonymous source told a UK tabloid, who said her request is currently being considered. However, while some locals are known to have warmed to her, other people on the island are not thought to be so keen, following her disastrous comeback gig at the St Lucia Jazz Festival.

Writing recently in a column for a local newspaper, former government official Jeff Fedee said he was "perplexed" by the sympathetic reaction from many people. After attending the gig, he insisted the singer "needs help", commenting: "For me it was a stomach churning experience to witness a reptilian looking character with a skeleton frame, staggering onto the stage, barely fitting into what appeared to be a size zero dress, cut just above an unsightly crotch. I thought Amy Winehouse should be locked up, be put in compulsory rehab and force fed to put some flesh on her insect frame", penned Fedee. Don't hold back there, Jeff!
